Coming sometime in the next year:

I.. well.. I can't say I called that.

Interesting?
The good news: the 3DS incorporates glasses-free 3D.

The bad news: you have to strap the 3DS to your face.

It's certainly what the kids call a "megaton" announcement. I wonder if they're passing off a head-tracking effect as "3D" or if they're really incorporating that glasses-free voodoo nVidia has demonstrated before.

After the Wii fiasco, I'm not getting my hopes up on any promises Nintendo makes till I'm holding that sucker in my cynical hands, but if they actually nail this, like they have most of their portable systems....well, damn.
It's not as impressive as you may think. When you pop in the Basketball 2011 cartridge, it just gives you a map to a court. The FPS games are a little more.....dangerous...

Yeah, Pokemon could be a little awkward, first time a 12 year old kid gets sent to juvie for getting his pet capybara named Squeakel to attack some woman's Pomeranian.

Your opponent casts 6 years for animal cruelty. It's super effective!

In two years, Nintendo is going to have to write a check for $1.09 to everyone with crossed eyes.

You don't need glasses as it's using the patented Nintendo Cross-Ey3D technology:

I'm with Justin, if they actually knock this out of the park, it will be massive.

Also, you bet that anime teenage witch fondling game will get re-released for this one.
Damn you to hell, Count Floyd.

I'm definitely intrigued. Given all the fuss about 3D in cinema it's kind of surprising it's taken so long for games to make some real moves in that direction as well. Nintendo's track record with innovation isn't bad, though this idea brings up memories of the Virtual Boy.

Hmmm...that article was pretty light on details. I'm not sure what to think at this point, other than the name 3DS is both obvious and perfect.

Nintendo has my full trust when it comes to portable gaming. So now they have a DS more powerful than their Wii?

I like 3D as well, but I hate the glasses. Nintendo has an opportunity here to diversify and get movies on this thing. iPhone/iTouch has been major competition as of late and it will be interesting to see where this goes.

Maybe some hologram type display? I don't know.
Cool, now I can feel less guilty for jerking off while playing Super Robot Taisen OG Saga.

They're calling it the Virtual Boy.

Some sort of fancy 3D polarized screen overlay? I guess long as it's not red, I don't really care....

EDIT: Dammit, Nick.

EDIT 2: Scott owes me a Coke.

I hope Panasonic sues them and tries to make the case that people might confuse this and the 3DO.

You'll get nothing and like it!

Can't Nintendo just continue porting SNES games to the DS? And with that in mind, I guess we can say goodbye to games with 2D gameplay, unless they do something boring like have the foreground and background move at two different speeds (which is not a way I'd want to play Super Metroid).

Are people still defending the 3DO?

Yeah, Panasonic.

Trip Hawkins occasionally peaks his head out of his refrigerator box home and defends it.
I'm kinda curious to hear how the game developers feel about this.
Wow, all this a few days before the US launch of the DSi XL. Thats a big fuck you to the consumer.

The US is full of fatties. It'll sell like hot cakes.

Better than a few days after, no?

Did anyone ever know anyone who actually owned a 3DO? Or a Jaguar? Or a SEGACD? Sometimes I think some of these systems were only ever available to play at electronics stores. Like it never happened.
Yes, yes and yes. Did they have Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Rayman, and Snatcher? No, no and no.

3do had Road Rash, Jaguar had AVP, Sega Cd had Sonic Cd and Snatcher and countless others.
Owning a CD-I and any of the Zelda games made for it is considered a crime against humanity, though.

I know or knew people who owned all of those systems and the guy with the 3DO had an Atari Lynx as well. Never knew anyone with a CD-I or Virtual Boy, though.

EDIT - he did have SSF2T.

I was a poor kid. I couldn't afford much more than one gaming system. I too consider these consoles mythical things.
Wasn't the Virtual Boy recalled--or at least failed commercially here in the US--after some retarded, maladjusted kid stabbed his grade school teacher and blamed it on playing Mortal Kombat on the system?
Had a Jaguar. It pretty much sucked.

Also had a 32x. Best friend had a Lynx. Other best friend had a Nomad. I am familiar with loser systems.
I'm assuming they'll be using the Parallax Barrier approach to do 3D effects without glasses.

The downside to this technology is it has a very narrow viewing angle, and an observer sitting to the side would see an incomplete / blurry double image.

No, it was recalled before it gained sentience and enslaved humanity in its glorious, red and black virtual reality

Knew a guy with a Jaguar. Dumb shit never bought any games for it until I almost literally dragged his ass down to an EB to pick up Doom, Tempest 2000, and AvP. Same guy who had a Neo Geo, but hated fighting games. I think he had the Down's.

Owned a Sega CD myself. Most frustrating system I ever owned. Just when I'd get ready to boot that sucker out a window, something brilliant would come out, and I'd fall in love with it again. Snatcher ensured that system would never leave my sight.

Now, the 32X? Regrets. I had them.
god the 32X was such a piece of shit why did Sega keep stacking expansions on top of expansions
post #44 of 94
it's like if I wanted to build things I'd have bought fucking Legos jesus christ Sega

Some speculation on how the 3DS 3-D effect will be done. Based on how it is already achieved on the DSi and the iPhone.

If you're a geek in the 90s, you were less likely to smash your system to oblivion with a hammer if said system looked like Voltron?
What about the Sonic & Knuckles attachment!?

I remember some kid in 1st grade having an Atari Lynx. It looks like crap even then. The thing was a goddamned sub sandwich.

Well, it was either that or letting the rest of the world have things like the Sega Saturn within the same decade Japanese kids had them. I've never really got why Japanese companies insist on making their systems exclusive to the country for a set period of time. When something comes out in the US, the whole world had it yesterday.
