Athough I'm not a huge horror fan that still made for interesting reading. And dispite that your blog has made me want to check out 2 as it's the only one of the series I havent seen.

Thanks for the feedback gents.

Abbot: You don't think Horror fans tend to be a little lenient towards the films in their chosen franchises, or at least tend to be way more interested in that franchise than others. Like how Devin is a Friday the 13th Guy.

Anyways, here is part 2 of 3. I should hopefully have part 3 up by the weekend, I went and bought Freddy vs. Jason on Blu Ray to give it a rewatch so I need to do that first.

Sure, but as I said, I think you'll find that divide when looking at these only from the perspective of franchises, but I'd think there is far more reconciliation of opinion amongst horror fans ,or fans of film in general, when it comes to say the original Halloween and Nightmare on Elm St.

ETA: Devin may be Friday the 13th guy when it comes to horror franchises but would he classify any of those films as being better than Carpenter's Halloween? I'd say I prefer the Nightmare films since I find them to be a far more interesting and imaginative franchise, even the failures, than the Friday and Halloween series, but Halloween's a classic. I'd say the same about the original Nightmare but it still comes in second to Carpenter's film.

Here's the third part, if anyone's interested, that deals with Freddy's Dead and New Nightmare

16000 words of History essays hit me over the end of May...and then Red Dead Redemption. Going to try and get this back to being weekly (at least).

Sweet! Life's ability to get in the way definitely isn't lost on me, but you've got a blog of real quality and it's good to know it isn't going away.

Just read over yer NIGHTMARE stuff. Was very interesting to read someone else's take on the whole series after having written about the whole thing myself. In particular I found it interesting that you feel most people like NEW NIGHTMARE, whereas I've always gotten the impression most disliked it. Just shows what a varied world we live in, even in these little horror pockets.

Good stuff.

Great stuff as always Spike, keep up the good work.

Well said Spike, well said.

I hadn't heard about the abolition of the UK film council that's kind of shocking, I suspect the new UK Space Agency won't be far behind.

But It's all your own fault, you should have voted for me.

Don't think this blog isn't missed, Spike... 'cos it is.

High-time for a return, if ya ask me.

I don't know where you're getting that from, looking back at the amount of posters from the thread's first page, buddy. A lot of whom are respected, too.

A disappointing amount of comments can certainly feel like a lack of interest, but the two aren't always connected. A lot of CHUD bloggers have an informal style that's very conducive to lots of conversation between threads. However, the scope of your Nightmare series alone suggests a different beast. I think sometimes people are just loathe to comment on something more film-centric if it just amounts to "I agree" or "I love/hate this flick" or "nice job." They don't think it warrants posting or something. You shouldn't take it so personally, 'cos you've got the goods.

If you choose to get back on the horse and display said goods, I'll be there.

By the way, my recent Blu-ray viewing of the director's cut of Aliens (wow) calls into question this thread's title anew.

Wonderful to have you back, mate.

I seem to remember ads for The Loved Ones doing the rounds recently and I didn't really pay them any mind. This, however, has me wanting to check it out. What can I say? I'm a sucker for high school horror movies.

Also, as someone who made the following remark about spiders during the week:

"I saw one in Maine that'd turn you WHITE!"...

I found the arachno-humour particularly enjoyable.

As someone who isn’t particularly squeamish I found myself becoming increasingly disturbed by the numerous ways that face flesh was assaulted by shotguns, baseball bats and other non-face friendly implements.
Glorious!

Nice blog Spike. Very nice.

Haven't actually seen The Loved Ones yet may have to give it a go. Underbelly's a weird one for me, a lot of people here love it but that entire first season story actually happened in and around where I was living just under a decade ago and the TV show, while being good, took major liberties with that true story, making it hard for me to connect with.

As far as aussie hip hop goes, putting on my 'Do You Want To Know More?' cap for a second, a few names I can recommend to people wanting to dip their toes in these most exciting of musical waters should look up a few of these crews and MC's for starters...

The Herd

Hilltop Hoods

Bliss'n'Esso

Phrase

Hermitude

M-Phazes

Illzilla

Astronomy Class

Chasm

Mantra

True Live

TZU

Urtboy

Diafrix

Drapht

The Tongue

The last show I did (which unfortunately are becoming a bit rare at the moment) can be streamed here. If you start from around the 72 minute mark you'll hear the hip hop kick in.
Great entry Spike. You write like a dream.

If enjoy that bone dry, wry Australian sense of humour and can find a way to get hold of it I suggest The Games, a two season, 26 episode TV show made in the run up to the 2000 Sydney Olympics. It's basically a pisstake of beaurocracy set amongst the Games organising committee and in a lot of ways it was The Office before The Office, except with a somewhat wider and more epic scope.

Good call on Aussie hip hop too.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm still trying to find my voice with a lot of these blogs, but this was surprisingly easy to write.

Thanks for the list RD, will definitely check some of them out.

Definitely check out Loved Ones Bobby, it's very, very, good.

I'll have to check out The Games, my knowledge of Australian comedy extends to Luhrman and Cath and Kim and that's about it.

I'm going to be alternating between writing my Blog and writing my History Dissertation over the next few months (I find that writing one inspires thoughts for the other) so you'll have to forgive me if I get a little academic every now and then.

It's already been added to the list. I also just spotted that it's Kim Newman's "Dungeon Breakout" pic in this month's Empire. Really looking forward to checking it out.

Good blog sir! You made me want to play the Assasins Creed games, which is something I had zero intrest in before.

Arrow Storm pretty much does away with strategy or subtlety when assassinating people. Taking down the Borgia Captains is easy as hell when you just need to be approxmimately in the same location and whistle for raining death.

Still, Brotherhood is fun as hell. It's like an expansion pack, but it feels like there's so much stuff in there, even if it's not all structured as well as it could/should be.

Hmm, it's snowing

WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!
Very good Spike, made me laugh a few times. The media's reaction is hilarious, it's been constantly snowing here in Newcastle for 8 days now and it barely gets a mention. Although twice this week I've got into work only to be sent home because of 'safety concerns'... not like I'm going to argue!

There is shin deep snow every morning when I walk to the Metro station, which hasn't broken down/been delayed at all, yes it's miserable, cold, wet and uncomfortable but everyone around here is just getting on with it. 2cm's in London and the South East and it's the fucking apocalypse and takes up the first 15 minutes of the national news, pfft!

I think there's an expectation that weather will be shitty once you get North of...say....York. It's once the bad weather sweeps downwards that the shit gets real. I was talking to my cousin in Gateshead and she was saying that the snow fallen hadn't even fazed people, people were still walking around in jeans and t-shirts.
That's Geordies for you, the 'not wearing coats' stereotype is actually true for the most part. I saw some girl this morning walking through the snow wearing a mini skirt, no tights, I don't know how they do it.

While people are getting on with it, the gritting of the roads has been terrible around here, the central motorway has been done but most of the main roads have had nothing. I fishtailed my car going around a corner last night and was very lucky not to crash into anything.

Edit: a friend has just sent me this, very fitting... http://i.imgur.com/FqBqK.jpg

Photography is something of a hobby of mine, although I'm not very good at it. I just couldn't believe how beautiful my workplace looked in the snow.
Good stuff Spike. For us South Pacific types a white Christmas kind of vibe has always been something of a fairytale but I suspect the reality is often somewhat less fun. Your media though? A lot of fun ... from afar at least. I really like your comments and insight into the British character too.

Good find on that strip Dan.

I actually trained to be a journalist, got all of my qualifications and spent about six months on my local paper before I realised I just didn't have the character for that kind of work. I was too much of a wuss. It sort of left me fascinated by mass media though, stuff like this are exciting for me because of how utterly insane the media is.

Last year was the first White Christmas we'd had in about fifteen years. Snow tends to hit early in the year rather than in December. Below is my garden on Christmas day last year. I love Christmas and I'm a public transport/walker so I kind of love the idea of snow at Christmas.

I'd be into it if the snow fell on the 24th and then was cleared up by the 27th or 28th. After that it would start to get old. I like to wear as few clothes as possible without getting arrested and snow just doesn't let me jive with that, but a few days at a time is quite the romantic state of affairs.
Great blog Spike. I will never understand the level of unprepairdness people in our country have for winter. And councils have no excuse for not gritting the roads, it's just shocking.

In which I realise that all of my favourite Christmas movies are scored by Danny Elfman. That Nightmare Before Christmas is an allegory for a corporate takeover. That Scrooged isn't as beloved as I assumed and that Batman Returns is probably my favourite Batman film.

Sorry Spike I missed this until today, great idea for a blog.

For me my favorate Bond moive is Goldeneye but my favorate Bond will always be Connery. He just plays the role so much better than anyone else.

Except for his turn in Never Say Never again which is just tragic to watch.

Doing a bit of a blog catch-up medley today, I noticed the Music and Christmas blogs aren't available. "Page not found" messages are all they display.

Loved your Bond run-down, Spike. I've never been that big a fan of the series, but I don't think I disagreed with a single thing you said. Hilarious depiction of Dalton, by the way. Reading that post actually put me in more of a mood for watching some of those earlier installments than running across one on TV tends to.
