Well, he's 63, so I support this decision.

Being stagedived upon by Iggy Pop is probably like trying to catch a wad of duct-taped running chainsaws.

Sad to see him retiring it, but fuck it man if he hits that ground too hard he's going to explode into a mist of speed crystals, peanut butter, and broken glass.

What? They moved out of Iggy's way? I bet it was a bunch of fucking posers not wanting to get any sweat on their 200$ fucking ironic t-shirts.

This is more for the concert or Stooges thread, but.... I've seen Iggy solo once and then the Stooges when they reunited for that album tour. He seemed fairly mellow that second time around so I thought he had already retired those awesome stage antics. Maybe I caught an off night. I mean, the first time he was a madman on stage with more energy than most bands less than half his age. It was fucking revelatory. It's a rare thing to walk away from a concert, asking yourself if you really saw what you think you saw. Totally grateful to have seen the 'old' Iggy.

He stage dove onto a bunch of confused Killers fans when I last saw the Stooges (six months before Ron Asheton died, I think?)

It seems odd that Iggy would be performing at Carnegie Hall at all. That place is super duper fancy. I'd figure he'd play venues like The Bowery Ballroom or Irving Plaza.

I saw footage of Iggy opening up for Madonna a while back. Her fans clearly had no idea who or what he was; girls up front had this look of confusion and disgust the entire time. The man is older than all hell, so if ending stage diving keeps him in one piece, more power to him. National treasure, that Osterberg lad.

The end of an era.

I've always thought stave diving was for the most part a forced and silly ritual for young concert going males to prove themselves to their peers than any kind of meaningful expression of excitement or crowd unity or whatever. Wasn't it Keith Morris who ended up breaking his neck or something after diving into an unresponsive crowd?
