Playstation 3 questions

Here in the next few days I plan on taking the plunge and purchasing a PS3. I'm hoping some of you can help me out and offer suggestiions.

- When I purchase the system will it have everything I need? I don't want to spend all that money, hook the thing up and discover I need other components to operate it.

Do I have to purchase the remote in order to play Blu-Rays?

Now its confession time

I've not played a gaming system since this first came out:

To say the least I am waaayyy behind and my biggest concern is making sure the first game I get will not be overwhelming. What game would you recommend I get first? Would something like Call of Duty be too hard for a newbie?

Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The controller will work for playing movies, but the remote works better. I have the remote, and I like it... it's like 20 bucks.

As far as games? The good thing about today's games is that you can adjust the difficulty on just about all of them. If you've never played an FPS, CoD or Bioshock would be a good bet. Heavy Rain is a mindfuck with bad voiceacting but cool and inventive gameplay.

The Best game on the system is Uncharted 2.

I'm also partial to the Ratchet and Clank games. If you like Pixar and silly scifi, you'd probably like that. It's an action/platformer... Mario with big silly guns.

Oh... I think it comes with an HDMI... can't remember. So I'm not sure what kind of TV you're hooking it in to, but it's got wifi built in, so you don't need an adapter.
If you're really wanting the remote, keep an eye out for deals. It's not necessary, but it makes life a little easier.

A lot of the times, you can pick up coupons and other junk to knock the price down. Around Christmas, Target had a sale where if you bought another controller, cable, accessory, etc.....you got the remote for free.

When you get it, find an open place to put it. If you're mainly doing Blu-Ray viewing, it won't get too hot. But, the chance is still there. As long as it's in open area that gets dusted, maintenance shouldn't be that bad.

The fans might get loud, it really depends. Don't be too worried. The gentle whirl of a PS3 fan is a lot quieter than the small helicopter that is the 360 fan.

You need an HDMI cable if hooking up to high def.

A good casual game to get into is Little Big Planet.

The Uncharted games are the best produced games I've played on the PS3. They are literally like playing a big action movie.

Hook it up to the internet, Eileen. That's where you'll get the most bang for your buck, with free streaming shows and video through TVersity, Netflix On Demand, and a really impressive library of pick-up-and-play PSN games. It's hard to say how much mileage you'll get out of stuff like COD or Uncharted, but there's no shortage of really fun, arcade-style games on the PSN. I'd say the downloadable content is, by and large, better than what's available for the 360, and you won't need any special account to log on and play with others. The PixelJunk games are especially good.

I've never had the remote, but as I understand it, there are plenty of bluetooth remotes and adapters out there for cheap if you decide to get one.

There are downsides, but a lot of them apply only to the hardcore crowd. PS3 ports are typically buggier than their 360 counterparts, and the online service isn't as good, either.

HDMI's a given.

Also, don't go low on the Hard Drive. What kind of HDD is the PS3 currently offering? I ask because Universal BRs, Lionsgate and a select amount of others like to save a lot of material to the hard drive.

After your first 10-15 discs, it's ok. Nothing much. But, as it goes on...you're going to start noticing that a lot of your HDD space is dedicated to just video file information.

Unless you get a special package deal, there is no HDMI cable included.

Which I find kind of silly considering it would only cost Sony about 10 cents to add one.
Get an HDMI cable off Amazon. They're insanely cheap there. If you buy an HDMI cable at Best Buy, you're a sucker.

Burnout Paradise is accessible to anyone, it's just an awesome, arcadey racer. There's also a ton of downloadable games on the Playstation Network that are worthwile... Flower's probably one of the best, not to mention one of the prettiest games on the system (OMG INDIVIDUAL BLADES OF GRASS).

And be sure to get the Power Pad. Shit's awesome!

120gb and 250gb

FYI, a 2.5 laptop drive is easily swapped if you ever need to go bigger.
If you havent had one of these things since the NES, the Playstation Network is full of things that will help ease the transition to the new school. Stuff like Symphony of the Night, Braid, Mega Man 9/10, Bionic Commando Rearmed, Any of the Pixeljunk games, those should be your bread and butter for a while.

Far as actual physical software, though, Ratchet and Clank and LittleBigPlanet should be your official welcome packages.

Thanks so much for the suggestions guys, I really appreciate this. I already purchased an HDMI cable on Amazon earlier this year so I'm good there.

Troy, this is the one I'm looking at getting:

If you are planning to surf the internet on it, I recomend the keybord. Using the controller to surf is a real nightmare.
That price seems a little high.

120gb system from newegg 300 + shipping

Not that much, though. I have 80GB installed, and with all the Blus I've watched and taken online, only one to eat up an inordinate amount of space was Watchmen, and thats only because of the software download to do the Live commentary. Are there worse?
Amazon isn't even selling PS3s right now due to the shortage. I think those are third party prices, which is why they're so high.
There is a 3rd party remote for like $15 and Bestbuy, or you can just go and spend the extra $9 for the "official" remote.

A second controller might be a good idea, but not really needed.

I second Little Big Planet, fun creative game that's easy to pick up and the Ratchet and Clank games are great fun as well! the first one in a "Biggest Hits" game which means you can get it for $20

I was pretty much in the same boat as you are in Eileen, I've not had a system since this guy..

There are much worse. The worst offenders being the Universal discs. Right now, I've watched nearly 700 Blu-Rays on the PS3 for review purposes.

The biggest drains have been the Star Trek Collection, Wanted, The Spirit, Bruno and Terminator 2: Skynet Edition

This makes sense.

A retail PS3 should be 300 (120gb) and 350 (250gb).

If I was you Eileen, I'd shop around.

That's a 250 gig system which is perfect. You should never run out of space. I know you're in Ohio, so look around you. Wal-mart, Sams or any chain should have a slightly better deal. I'd recommend staying away from most of the warehouses since they want to bundle shit.
I bought my DVD remote used at Gamestop for about $10. Bought a second Logitech controller instead of a PS3 model, and I'll tell you this--the batteries I've put in it have lasted forever. My wife plays FFXIII and my son was steadily playing Mercs 2 for about the past 2 months. I think the batteries in there are like a year old. But my PS3 controller...it seems that I have to re-charge it after playing something more than an hour.

WOW!! See, this is the reason I come here for assistance.
Yeah, I was in Fry's the other day, they had plenty of PS3s at the $300 price point.

Can't recommend Uncharted 2 enough. Plays just like a movie, and gives you a challenge while not being soul-crushingly difficult. Hell, the first game is pretty good as well, and I think you can get it for around $25.

I just got mine this past Christmas, and hadn't had any system since a N64. The downloadable demos are fantastic for checking out a game you may want to pick up - it's actually how I got Uncharted 2 (after also soliciting some advice here). Recommend it much more over Call of Duty...
My wife is a novice gamer and loves the Uncharted 2 demo we downloaded. She is also a big fan of "up" the game.
I can't get my wife away from FF13 so pick that up if you like the series.. Then again wasn't the last FF on the NES FF3....
Walk before you run: Download Final Fantasy VII off the Network first.
Ha good point Justin. Better to spent like $10 bucks to see if you like the series instead of $60!
Guess we'll see you in the blu-ray threads.

Enjoy the PS3, looks like you got all the good advice. Drop the extra for the remote, it makes life a lot easier with movies, and you get a lot more access to the functions a little easier.

Does anyone else's PS3 just flat out fucking SUCK at handling wireless?

My d/l speed tests at around 21 Mbps, and a laptop connected to wireless in my house exhibits no fuck ups.

And yet, mysteriously, my PS3 fucking NEVER will play Instant Netflix, get on PSN, or any sort of online activity. It usually fails the Connection Test at random points even though looking at my Connectivity Status says that I am in fact connected wirelessly, and receiving a 60-80% signal.

I'm seriously pissed since due to the layout of my house right now, running a hard-line/ethernet cable from my modem upstairs to my entertainment area downstairs is not, and will not be an option.
Yeah, I'm the same way.

I fiddled with the wireless channels and I get about 80% signal on the PS3. It's more than enough for online play, but Netflix still can have problems buffering. However, I go upstairs to my hardlined desktop and Netflix plays just fine.

I'm considering a repeater or something, haven't figured out what I want to do yet.

I had a problem similar to this when I first got my PS3 a couple of years ago. Every time I would try to access any online content, it would connect (or try to) and then boot me off or just tell me that it couldn't connect.

After showing the problem to one of my computer geek friends, we discovered that the wireless hub I was using needed to have its drivers updated.

Everything has worked fine since.
Eh, just run some fishwire to your room. Nothing's impossible!

I have my PS3 wired to my router, but I can't do remote play with the PSP. The PS3 MUST have a wireless connection. But yeah, PS3's wireless is fucking awful. Complain all you want, but I think the 360 not having wi-fi out of the box is a good thing. Way less awful connections as a result.
Oh, if I was back in the "old college days," I'd just run a long wire down the steps and around shit and call it a day.

But I live in a nice house now that's relatively tidy, and I want to keep it that way. I also don't want to go drilling lots of holes/tearing up carpet to hide stuff.
Do you have a basement/attic below/above the room where your PS3 resides? I'm sure you can run some CAT5 from your router to your PS3 pretty easily. You can still have a nice house and still have it wired properly if you do it right.
Again, due to the particular layout of my place, it wouldn't be easy at all. Hence, my frustration. The amount of energy to do this almost outweighs the joy I would deprive from it. I might consider it though, it's just I'm close to looking to put the place on the market, sell it, and move.

Probably just a typo, but that's hilarious. I might sig that.
If I was you'd I'd make the expense and wire up all the rooms. Especially if you want to do internet TV, I hear using CAT5/6 is better than running the signal over coax.

I'll eventually wire my whole house up too as I'm moving to internet TV.
