Raspberry Leper suggested that I start this thread, and so here we are!

One of my favorite kinds of ice cream is from the SoCo creamery in Berkshire County MA.... however it costs me nearly 4$ for a single scoop of pumpkin!*

*It tastes like pumpkin pie, it's amazing..

Well, there will always be a "High Cost of living" on any and every coast, if one goes out of their way for it, no?

Sure, but this thread is east coast specific and deals with items that west coasters (or other USAers) might either not purchase at all or things they'd be able to purchase on the cheap

For example, this thread was inspired by the fact that I bought a 7 dollar crab cake the other day. That's not something someone in Kansas would ever worry about

Kate, I know we've had our differences about the South, so lets leave all that aside. Instead, let me just say that, comparatively speaking, shit is CHEAP in the South. Not until I started looking for places up north did I realize how lucky we are down here. Everything is less expensive. Granted, per capita incomes average lower, but still. I'm no longer taking for granted a full meal for $6 with drink. Or a 1300+ sq ft apartment for $915.

Come visit some time, you might like it! ; )

I live in a town where the real human beings are getting edged out by yuppies and vacation home owners. I think that's why the prices are so crazy here. For example since I left highschool the bakery and a deli left our main commercial street in the center of campus in town. They were replaced by an art gallery (the FOURTH one in town) and a NORTH FACE expensive hiking equipment store (the second such hiking store in town)

If any of you are looking to ever spend some time in South Beach down in Miami, Florida be prepared for some sticker shock if you ever find yourself in a dance club (to which the cover charge is usually $20 to $30 dollars, sometimes more depending on if it's a big theme/holiday weekend).

Bottle of Corona: $9.00
Mixed drink (say... a vodka & cranberry) using well liquor: $14.00
Bottle service (1 L bottle of Grey Goose and instant entry plus VIP table): $300 - $350

Shopping on Lincoln ave., I have seen graphic T-shirts (T SHIRTS!!!) marked at $200.00
The True Religion jeans store has jeans that cost $600.00... and more.

Makes me laugh. Still, I love the place... I see some of the most beautiful women on the planet down there.

Good thing I don't feel comfortable dancing in public or else I'd be in trouble. 14 dollars for a drink in a dance club is insane and a sign of a society that has detached itself from reality or common sense. I imagine rhythmic exercise temples were charging 14 sesterces for a glass of wine about the time the barbarians sacked Rome..

Seriously. I often wish I'd just stayed in Baltimore after graduating, because my rent down there would have been way reduced and I'd probably have just as good an apartment (if not slightly inferior). Cost of living down there is much less than what it is in and around Boston. I mean, I live in Norwood and I'm still spending more on, say, rent and groceries here than I would be down in Baltimore/Towson.

I will say that most of the bars I go to don't ask for nearly as much as the club gobblox mentions-- but that's Miami.

Yup, that's Miami and that's the club. Bars that are in the same area (hell, across the street even) have normal priced drinks, and heck, the one across the street from the club I'm referring to was doing $1 beer when I went for spring break. You just have to know what you're getting yourself into for whatever venue you go into there. Oh, and be sure that you know whether these places have already added gratuity. The $14 drinks and $9 Coronas I mentioned were such a case.

I paid $3.63 for an olive roll last week. My dad nearly flipped out.

EDIT: While I can on some level understand how it could cost that much, it still was a shock. East Coast living truly is getting to be expensive.

I mentioned this in the WHAT ARE YOU HAVING FOR DINNER TONIGHT? thread, but it seemed like a good idea to repost it here in order to offer up a more complete perspective on east coast pricing to anyone viewing this thread

Earlier in the week, I purchased a piece of salmon that was $17.99 a pound. I've never before purchased fish at that price level. Is this happening elsewhere in the country too, or is it a strictly east coast phenomena?

$17.99 a pound? Did you buy farm raised or wild? Wild salmon will cost you.

It was farm raised, that's what blew my mind. It had the bones out though, so maybe that added to the cost? The worst part was I ended up burning it into tastelessness
