Watched Duel on Ganryu Island last night.

Wow, all I have to say is that THIS is underseen. Heard about it here and there, but that final duel between Musashi and Kojiro is just fantastic.

You're talking about the Toshiro Mifune, Miyamoto Mushashi movies right?

I remember seeing these for the first time about five years ago and being really underwhelmed. It was only when I gave them another chance and didn't expect them to be like Sword of Doom/Harakiri that I really appreciated the tone and style of the films. There's an amazing feel to the movies, it's almost laxidasical at times and it really helps to convey the mood and nature of Mushashi. It's also quite stunning to look at, some really beautiful composition and cinematography and that final duel on the beach is pretty much amazing.

Definitely; Duel at Ganryu Island almost struck me as a samurai precursor to Unforgiven - with the titular character hoping to escape his violence-ridden past, and being unable to do so.
