Holy shit - Massive explosions on Moscow subway

This has just happened now. My first thought is something to do with Chechnya but who knows, Putins Russia's not short of enemies these days...

Deadly explosion on Moscow metro

At least 25 people have been killed in an explosion on Moscow’s metro system, Russian news agencies say.

The Interfax news agency quoted a Russian security source as saying the blast could have been the work of a suicide bomber, but no further details were immediately available.

The took place on a train while it was in the Lubyanka station in central Moscow on Monday, the spokeswoman for the Russian emergencies ministry Irina Andrianova told the ITAR-TASS news agency.

‘‘14 people died in the wagon of the train and 11 on the platform,’’ she said.

At least 10 people were wounded. There have been unconfirmed reports of a second explosion.

The Russian capital in the last decade was hit by a string of deadly explosions claimed by militants from its turbulent southern region of Chechnya but this has become less frequent in the last years.

Part of me wants to make a joke about geometry here, but quips about a majority vote from a decagon seem inappropriate for something terrible like this.

The weather is good so I expect to hear who did it in the next 48 hours and military action within the week.

And now in addition to everyone sitting on the edge of their seats in Korea we'll have parts of Central Asia getting the shit blown out of them. This sucks.

Well in Febuary the Chechen rebel leader said

"the zone of military operations will be extended to the territory of Russia... the war is coming to their cities"

I've been watching alot of movies about Russia lately (REDS, DR ZHIVAGO, NICHOLAS AND ALEXANDRA, TRANS-SIBERIAN, ANASTASIA), and I have to say this comes as terrible news.

I guess it goes to show you that Putin's murderous tactics against the chechens had a less than positive effect on the conflict..

So awful. And it will lead to worse things.

The Russian government does terrible things without an excuse. Under monarchy, communism or democracy there's always been a totalitarian streak in Russian government.

If anyone's interested in following Russian current events closely I highly recommend Robert Amsterdam's blog, an aggregate source of various Russian news articles, including domestic ones translated into English.
