Miracle (Starring Kurt Russell)

I just watched this 2.5 times over the weekend. I've been doing epic house cleaning, and discovered the disk under my bed. I wish I'd have found it back during the Olympics!*

This is just about the best Disney live action film of the past 10 years, and it features a great (if not quite a career best.. he's so fracking talented it's hard to say precisely what role makes that talent most evident ) Russell Role with the man from Springfield Massachusetts portraying the coach 'HERB BROOKS'

When I first saw it I was impressed by how it attempted to put the win in a social/historical context, and make it something that even non sports fans could appreciate. When I saw it again, I knew a bit more about hockey (having seen some during the 2KX Olympics**) and got even more out of it

Is anyone else a fan of this?

PS I watched the special features last night, and Mr Russell talks about how he told the director that he could play the role two ways:

1) He could just do his Movie Star thing and play a coach who just happened to be called Herb Brooks (IE, do a 'Coach Carter')
2) He could become Herb Brooks

There are some actors who are method and some who are movie stars... and then there is Kurt Russell. Almost more than the titular 'Miracle' itself, it's Russell that makes me proud to be American (and a Bay Stater! )

AMERICAN HERO***

PS: I hope an Apolo Ohno movie is not far off!

* I tried to get it from NETFLIX but it was VERY LONG WAIT
** This is, quite possibly, my funniest message board post ever (IMHO). I made it during the Canada/USA hockey game when it looked like America was about to 'Miracle' again
*** His BREAKDOWN character is *from* Massachusetts!!

As a Welshman without much ties to hockey I wasn't expecting to like the film as much as I did, but goddamn it's pretty good. I was put off for the longest time because of the terrible jingoistic trailer, but the film is remarkably solid, and as it turns out just mismarketed. Russell is greatness here though, with this and 'Dark Blue' making a great 'Underrated Russell' double-bill.
