PS3 Non-anamorphic DVD question

Hey so I have a handful of DVDs that when trying to play them I realized they aren't anamorphic which of course means I have a fucking rectangular box in the middle of my pretty LCD set. I have heard in the past that DVD players would blow it up to fill the whole screen. Now im sure it doesn't look very good but it would still be better than this shit. My question though is how can I get the PS3 to do that. I tried setting the upscale to FULL but all that did was stretch it out on the sides. It still leaves the black bars at the top and bottom. Is there anything I can do or am I screwed?

Try a combination of the PS3 upscaling settings and your TV's wide settings. You should get the desired effect after fucking around with it enough.

Typically for non-anamorphic DVDs you'll want to 'zoom'. Unfortunately on the PS3 that functionality only works when playing files off the hard drive/usb/memory cards and NOT DVDs (no idea why that is the case though). So what you'll probably have to do is set your PS3 video output to 480p and then use your TV's zoom capability to display it properly.

See here. This is how you would zoom if you could.

Alright so I tried it. I tried turning off upscalling but all it did was stretch the image on the top and bottom when I tried to use the tv zoom. So I turne the upscaling back on to normal and then tried the tv zoom. This time it worked much better. I still hae black bars on the top but they are much smaller. I mean since it's a 1:85:1 image they shouldn't be there at all. However I can tolerate them and it doesn't look at bad as I thought. Although tonight I will be putting in a disc that is more like 2:40:1 so I imagine the bars will be bigger. Im sure some ts do this better, I hae a Samsung thats going on 2 years old so that could affect things im sure.

Maybe if you did 480p output but at 4:3 aspect ratio and then did zoom?

Remember why letterbox is better than pan and scan? Those are the same reasons you should give this up.
