The Vampire Diaries

The show just returned from hiatus. Anyone watching this show? It think this is the best new drama on network tv. Unfortunately just because it's on the CW and because of the title people are dismissing it as a twilight clone. As a vampire show I feel like it is better than True Blood right now (and I like True Blood a lot).

What new drama do you think is better? FlashForward? Mercy? Trauma? There are new comedies like Modern Family which are better but I can't think of a drama.
It would be nothing without Ian Somerhalder.
My vote would go to Parenthood. Diaries is One Tree Hill with fangs.

I watch it, but its hardly great. Somerhalder is extremely entertaining though and I'm impressed they haven't even attempted to soften his character. Only real reason to watch, he gets the best line and whenever Stefan gets too mopey or emo, he beats him up! Glorious.

Stefan, however, am DUM. "My brother's a vicious killer who must be killed! I have tricked him into drinking tainted blood and he is weak! Instead of staking him, I shall lock him up! Oh no, he's escaped and killed again!"

I call this show "That Twilight ripoff that comes on before Supernatural."

So what did everyone think of the last few episodes? Pretty awesome stuff. I love Alaric, he is a kick-ass character I almost have a crush on him. It's cute the way everytime he calls someone on the phone he says, "Hi, this is Alaric Saltzmann" instead of saying "Hi, this is Alaric" or "Hi this is Rick" like a normal person would. Any theories on why Cathrine wants to kill all the tomb vampires?
This show actually moves its storylines along, which I damn sure appreciate.

Swanson, thank you for starting this thread. I considered it...but I'm a pussy.

I'm.....I'm actually enjoying this show as much as Supernatural. It's got the soap opera thing going on, but my god, it's turning out to be a tightly plotted, fastpaced supernatural thriller of quality!

When I first saw the promos, I thought "Twilight rip-off" too, but as the show's gone on I'm enthralled.
I think Katherine's just a grade A bitch. In the flashbacks she's come off as a psychopathic, selfish thrillseeker...I imagine it's not that much different now. I think she wants the Tomb Vampires dead just because she can. Especially with her "Best friend for hundreds of years" killed at her orders...It just seems spiteful more than anything else.

But Mia Kirshner as Isobel? Holy shit, that was awesome. Loved the 'degaying' of the gay rodeo cowboy...In fact, I like a lot of their casting. Ian Somerhalder goes without saying, but they've had Gina Torres on, Mia Kirshner as mentioned before, David Anders, Melinda Clarke...even some old Buffy folks like Bianca Lawson...

All in all, it's turning into a nifty genre show. I'll admit to watching it.
I figured Catherine wanted the tomb vampires dead because she didn't want the competition. More vampires running around killing people would call attention to her and get in the way of her plans.

If only Nina Dobrev was as engaing when playing Elena as she is when playing Katherine. Elena as a character is miles ahead of that Bella nonsense, but Nina delivers her lines like she's half-asleep sometimes, and her attempts at being sarcastic toward Damon fall flat.

And this love triangle shit isn't working for me. Still don't get why she's even friends with Damon considering the shit that guy has pulled, especially what he did to Caroline. Dude's irredeemable in my eyes.

Elena and Stefan am dum. The smartest human on that show is her witch friend.
Oh, Nina Dobrev is much more amazing as Katherine than Elena, I concur, and ditto with the Elena > Bella. Maybe she's just trying to keep the two different? Dunno.

I think they're pulling off the triangle better than other shows, but I know what you mean about what Damon did to Caroline. That shit is rape, no matter which way you look at it. Is it Ian? He's just so pretty. I can't hate him, but then again, I came in about episode 6. I think maybe if I started from the beginning I'd share the viewpoint.

I think the witch is Bonny? I sort of love the fact she didn't remove the mojo from the device. As invested as we are in the main characters, she is right. A whole lot of death and heartache would never had happened if any of the vampires, including Stefan and Damon, were gone.

I miss Pearl though.

You can keep the two different without one being a bland mope. I can count on one hand how many times Elena has full-on smiled this entire season. If she didn't look like Katherine, neither of these guys would be after her dull ass.

I like Ian, but I will never buy Elena wanting to be with Damon or vice versa. I can see it coming and I don't buy it. Ian infuses Damon with a lot of charm, but if I were Elena, all the charm in the world wouldn't make me forget that he basically raped one of my friends and used her as dinner, fucked my birth mom and turned her into a vampire, threatened my safety, tormented my boyfriend, tried to compel me into kissing him when we first met (and probably would have done even more if I hadn't been wearing vervain)...oh, and has no problem whatsoever with KILLING PEOPLE AT THE DROP OF A DIME. I'll pass.

Bonnie's a badass.

Pearl went out like a punk. I was pissed that she was killed off like that. At least give her a good send-off.

Amazing finale! During the first 15 mins I was annoyed and I was like seriously? this stupid parade thing is what you're doing for the season finale? but man once it got started it was fucking amazing. I feel like it should have been a 2 hr episode. The only thing that disappointed me was that Alaric did not have much to do. I was pleasantly surprised how the finale seemingly brought all the different arcs to their resolution within the context of the season, even the stuff that I never cared about like the whole Tyler and Matt drama worked for me. The Jeremy character has bugged me the entire season as he is so over the top mopey but I liked where they took him in this episode. And Bonnie wow! That monologue she gives towards the end was chilling. Again the only disappointing thing was that they did not give Alaric a big moment but I guess last week was supposed to be his big moment. I still would have liked if they had done something with him and Jenna but that's just nitpicking. A+

I want Damon back on my television!

Yea for cheesy self aware goodness!

Unlike my other CW addiction (shut up I've loved Superman since I was twee!) I'll actually defend Vampire Diaries.
Holee shee-it.
Holy shit.
Girls and Swanson, let us discuss,

Damon killed Jeremy! I jumped out of my seat when he did that. I could not believe they went there. I mean, I guess it's obvious he most likely had the ring, but goddamn. Goddamn show.

And then Caroline! Omigod.

I love how no-one is safe in this show. Damn. I really adore at how quickly this series moves. It's relentless. Missed Alaric, and I think I would have let Ian Somerhalder...when Katherine rejected him....dear god. He's my new tv boyfriend. He's so blisteringly attractive it's painful.

So. I can also say I appreciate how they sort of skirt the issue of the Lockwood Family's curse/Curse. We know it's something supernatural, but it looks like it is being played lowkey in comparison to all the drama going on.

If they keep this up...I don't know what I'm going to do. This was an amazing season opener.
Holy shit holy shit holy shit!

That was one hell of a start to the season. Nina was aces as Katherine. It makes Elena look all the more boring and flat when you have Katherine in the same episode. I loved her performance. I did not see that coming with Damon snapping Jeremy's neck like that. That was genuinely shocking. There were loud gasps and shrieks in the room for that moment. NO WAY will I ever be able to hop aboard the USS Damon/Elena after that moment. She rejects you (while telling you that she does care for you, by the way) so you KILL HER BROTHER?! Jeez, Damon.

Caroline as a vamp is gonna be Jessica from True Blood redux.

ETA: During that scene where Damon is trying to kiss Elena and she's saying no, I was convinced that we were going to see a rape attempt. Thank God they didn't go there.
ITA, Harley. I think that she has finally come down on the side of hating Damon, and I do hope it sticks. If anything, this was the denouement of all the questionable shit in Season 1. I really, really hope this sticks.

Yeah, there was a bit of shrieking in my house too. Brutal. This show has balls that other comparable to it (*cough* Supernatural *cough*) seem to lack.
(Can you tell I really don't like Season 5 of Supernatural, especially when compared to this show?)
I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one yelping when Damon killed Jeremy. Awesome stuff.

Caroline as Jessica redux kind of has me excited. Though there's going to be all kinds of drama when her mom figures it out.

I really love how they don't hesitate in making Damon as evil and nasty as possible.

Was anyone else a little nervous for Bonnie during her confrontation with Katherine? Got to love the tension this show manages to eke out.
What the fuck was this episode. Total let-down from last week save for Caroline's story.

1) Jeremy's last scene with Damon=utter bullshit. Dude kills you, threatens to do it again, and you don't kill him because you want to find yourself? Fuck yourself.

2) Bonnie drinking the Damon Haterade is already tired, and this is episode TWO. I get her beef completely, but I'm sick of her.

3) Elena is a whiny, mopey, mumbly bore, and there is no reason for me to root for this girl to live. I was waiting all damn week for the moment when she'd come face-to-face with Damon, and I was sorely let down. The guy snapped her brother's neck, and her reaction to him is...some mumbly mumbly "ok I'll go off with you lalala". Granted, she was in public and couldn't rip him a new asshole like she could in private, but come on. You said you HATE this man, and your face looks less angry than a kid getting a flu shot. Seriously, was she any more angry or annoyed with him tonight than she was on any given night? KILLING Jeremy was a huge turning point, or so I thought, but it's pretty much business as usual around Mystic Falls. Nina is aces as Katherine and so horribly meh as Elena. I really want to see Elena step up like she did where she threw herself in front of Caroline to save her. She's just horribly boring, and her whining about not being normal was laughable? She made a conscious decision to fuck an undead dog. Deal with the fleas.

4) I do not give a fuck about Tyler Lockwood.

5) Caroline posing like a goddamn supermodel when she pushed Damon down was hilarious. It was a little convenient that she could compel the nurse so early on in her undead life, but I guess those are the rules for this show.

I was bummed there was no Kathrine this episode, that chick it hot!
I would call this show a guilty pleasure if there was any guilt involved, it's a fucking blast. Funny, dark and really mean-spirited. Plus: hot people everywhere.

I haven't caught up on season 2 yet but I will say if Twilight was anything like The Vampire Diaries (ie: fun and violent) then I'd totally understand the appeal. And I'd be on Team Damon.

Spoiler in black:She'll be back for episode 4.
Only caught the latter half. I like Elena, but you're right. I imagine Nina Dobrev is trying to distinguish the two characters as much as possible, so she's playing both in the extremes. Elena was much more tolerable in the first season, and I suspect that's because we didn't see Katherine as much.

I imagine the Lockwood stuff is setup for when the characters begin to conflict, as in next episode...so I'm tolerating it. I don't mind the pretty manflesh, but yeah. It's tired shit.

I know Damon's a right bastard, but when Ian just.....dear god. That man.
No amount of piercing eyes and pouty lips will erase the facts: he snapped Jeremy's neck and he's a sack of shit.
Really not a good night for black people in Mystic Falls, was it?
Hey, within the context of the series, piercing eyes and pouty lips do not make up for snapping Jeremy's neck and acting like a sack of shit.

But removed, as a viewer, I would objectify the hell out of that man.

And yeah, that's what I thought too, Cameron. Poor bastard never had a chance. He must have been looking for the white women.

He just wanted to earn an honest dollar with an honest night's work and possibly hook up with the way hot Bonnie! Instead, he got glamoured by Damon to pick a fight, got beat the hell up by two werewolves (and Stefan let it happen, that dick), and then got eaten by Caroline.

Don't forget the black nurse as well. She got it pretty bad too.
And Harper, that tomb vamp from season 1. And Bonnie's grandmother.

It's generally not a good idea to be Black in this town.

Forget it Harley, it's the CW.

YEEEEEEES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Elena, you fierce, ferocious bitch I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS S!!!!!!!!!!!

Cry MORE, Damon. Cry MOOOOOOOORE!
Okay episode, although the Katherine/Elena face-to-face was a blip on the radar, when the preview for this episode made it look like that would be the big central point of the episode. It looked better than a lot of scenes I've seen with one actor playing twins or something and CG is used, but it was still sort of awkward.

Katherine seeming to truly love Stefan is intriguing, but if she really did, what took her 145 years to come for him? Not buying it.

I fell for the fake fight. Can't believe I did.
I'm liking Caroline as a vampire, I hope they're able to keep her around long term rather than giving her the Vicki treatment.

On the other hand, I like Bonnie, but they've simply made her too powerful, and I don't see how the writers justify keeping her in the picture. For example, as easy as it was for her to make the daywalker ring, how does every vamp in the world not have one? Is she the only witch on the planet?

They should have brought her power along more slowly and made the things she can do more difficult. Knowing she can drop Damon at will strains credibility if he gets into shenanigans and she doesn't intervene.

As far as the werewolves go, I want to know more about the rules for them before making up my mind.
They pretty much told us last night that Tyler will kill someone before this season is over and then become a werewolf. Who he kills remains to be seen, but they said it has to be human blood that gets spilled. That leaves Elena, Matt, Jeremy, Alaric, Bonnie, Jenna, Mrs. Forbes, and Tyler's mom on the chopping block. My money is on Tyler's mom via a tragic accident.
Fuck you guys, I feel like I'm missing out.

I just put this on my Netflix queue, and I'm DVRing season 2. Hyped up good shit better be hyped up good shit!
I like to describe it as Twilight meets True Blood on the set of Dawson's Creek.

And Kernel you summed up the problem with Bonnie very well. Though they did a nice job showing that Katherine is a bit of a threat to all powerful Bonnie.

Is anyone else deeply concerned for Caroline every time she runs into Katherine or Damon or a werewolf?

I'm still pissed about Vicki, and not just because she was hot.

God, this show is like crack. Sweet, sweet CRACK.

Caroline just about broke my heart tonight, and Katherine looks to be holding all the cards. Can't wait for the next episode, which I think is the first of a two-parter.
Great episode. Caroline is quickly becoming my favorite character.

Damon even redeemed himself a little bit (as much as you can from snapping a dude's neck) with his treatment of Caroline and her mom. Awesome sauce.

To be fair, it was Jeremy's neck. Damon deserved a medal for that.

That kid proved in the hospital scene with Elena that he can't act. His way of showing anger is to clench his jaw a little. Your aunt is clinging to life in the next room, and you clench your jaw and stare off into space?
EVERY WEEK OF THIS SHOW IS THE BEST WEEK EVER. Holy shit!!!!!! Katherine killing that redshirt girl on the dance floor was a jaw-dropper. How did Stefan get that girl to the car trunk with no one noticing he was dragging a dead body?

They pulled a"True Blood Russell in the cement" deal here with Katherine, but we knew Kat wasn't going to die, and I knew Damon wouldn't close the deal. I smell a Caroline/Tyler hook-up that will put Underworld to shame, and this is the first episode where I found Jeremy extremely attractive. Mmmhmm. Boy was working that suit like nobody's business. Loved Elena not rushing back into Stefan's arms, too. She needs to step away for now. Who does Bonnie live with now that her Grams is dead? Where is her family? I ask this because the revelation of the other witch being her cousin was played as some huge "Bonnie thinks she's alone but she's NOOOOT!" deal. And really, who was surprised that they were family? What are the odds of another hot Black witch not being related to Bonnie? Sadly, since she's Black and in Mystic Falls, she'll be dead by season's end.

Intrigued as to why Elena was taken. I noticed that the masked guy turned and watched Katherine walk into the ball at the beginning. Did he take Elena because he thinks she's Katherine?

That must be it. Katherine said Elena is in danger because she's her doppleganger.
