The Chud Quake Command Center

Thread Starter

Rather than post up a new thread each and every time a new earth quake strikes, I thought it might be better to consolidate future news and updates into this one thread.

And so, as the CHUD's amateur Tsarina of Seismology, it's my high privilege and distinct honor to declare the CHUD Quake Command Center* officially open for business.

This is a good place for people to ask after the safety and well being of Chewers who may have been recently effected by sudden geologic activity, as well as share breaking news or scientific info

To kick us off, I thought this fascinating news article was a perfect jumping off point for many wonderful discussions sure to follow

It manages to combine both my love of amphibians and my fascination with plate tectonics

TOADS: PSYCHIC EARTH QUAKE DETECTORS?

*Henceforth to be known as CQCC for short

Y'know, I woke up this morning with a vague sense of feeling somehow safer. And now I know why. Thank you, PK, and God bless you in your new office!

That's what I'm here for, Mattioli

Hrm?

PS After rereading that article, I think that the headline was a exaggerating the enormity of this discovery. The toad-as-quake-detector information seems to be totally anecdotal in nature, based upon a one time event in Italy, and the analysis far from conclusive. I'm not sure how this became such big news story (I saw people on CNN talking about it just a few minutes ago).

I was kind of hoping that we'd soon see scores of government funded toad habitats cropping up along fault lines nation wide as a kind of early warning system.. now that's looking like it might be a pipe dream..

bummer, I though this thread was going to be about putting Chud quake league together.

I usually stay away from these things, but I have to say something. We're either in the presence of one of the most thorough trolls I've ever seen or one of the most guileless people on Earth.

I can't fathom how you could be so cynical in a thread that could possibly save lives.

I started this specifically to avoid spamming the board by posting new EQ threads every other week. I'm not sure what that has to do with trolling or naivety

Oh no, not Mattioli!! I've failed the CHUD-munity(c)

lol

PS In all seriousness, until I get highspeed internet at home I simply won't be in a good position to stay as on top of this stuff as I'd like to for you guys. The CHUD-munity should not look to me as their primary source for vital seismic safety updates.

In the mean time, this USGS Earth Quake page is a great resource. It has up to date info on quakes both in the US and world wide.

God DAMMIT, Kate. Less than 24 hours on the job and you're already bailing on your self-appointed responsibilities. This will NOT look good on your resume.

In the Greeks defense, they do struggle to tell earthquakes and weddings apart.

From now on I will assume this is what you look like, PK.

Also, this is a map of Indiana, and since you're the seismology tsarina, it would be awesome if you could let me know when the Graboids are close. In fact, please warn us of any Graboid activity. I live far from Perfection, Nevada, but those fuckers have had twenty years to migrate. Thanks in advance.

Holy shit, that's my state on the upper edge of that map! Those buggers could be burrowing up under me any second! Plz keep us informed PK, I don't want to lose a kid to one of those monsters.

Yeah, as opposed to being the engine that powered the advance of Western civilization. Like the Celts. They had all this time to concern themselves with loftier goals, because of not wasting time bathing or using utensils when they eat, up until 100 years ago. Of course that were those of them not being conquered and assimilated by superior civilizations.

What? I'm bored. I have to pass the time somehow.

I'm actually Norman-Irish--I even have a French last name--so most of those stereotypes don't apply. Try again, goatherder. Perhaps you'd like to take a nap first...

Napping is very healthy, try it some time, you might live longer. Bragging about being French, really beside inviting Mayo-naise, the metric system, canning, pasteurization, germ theory and modern artillery, what have you guys done for the rest of us lately?

Well if it killed off enough people global warming would stop being a problem for the next hundred years or so.

The good news is I have really very shitty luck with both cards and woman, but I can survive any life and death event.

Norman-Irish? That sure seems like a potent cocktail. One part duplicitous and thieving bully, one part feeble and superstitious savage. Whichever way you mix it hilarity ensues.

As for the greeks, I gues my icon says it all.
Lets us cavort now that we're safe from whenever Atlas fumbles the big ball, guys.

I did start a thread for your second Chile Quake, but the good news is in the future you'll know the CQCC is where to go for quake updates.

Re: The Graboid Menace

I first saw TREMORS at age 7 or so when it was on Home Video. It's a great scary movie, but fiction or not I was left shaken (no pun intended) by the idea of a prehistoric super worm capable of preying upon supra-terranean surface dwellers.

If such a creature were to actually inhabit the soil beneath our feet, it would have frightening implications for the continued survival of the human race. It's a threat I take very seriously and should evidence ever emerge proving their existence rest assured I will be on top of that situation for you guys.

We just had one here that shook the chandelier.

Good catch, Jake. Anyone in a close by coastal area should be on the look out for tsunamis, FYI

EDIT I just looked up where that is. People in that close by watery area should watch out. I'm going to do a screen grab of the google map and then post it up

EDIT 2:

sdasdasdasdasdaasdTHE EPICENTER
(according to google, using the longitude and latitude from Jake's helpful link)

EDIT 2: Ok, easter dinner time but then I'll be back to discuss any updates

It felt longer the a 6.9 to me. Maybe because I was in the riverbed, but I could still feel it when they interrupted the game to say it was a 6.9. At around the minute mark I was thinking there goes San Francisco.

I have just a minute because it turns out that the Yorkshire pudding is not yet ready

So in the mean time, here is the link to the Huff Po's coverage of the quake.

EDIT: Btw, "longer" than a 6.9? The 6.9 is a measurement of relative strength, not duration.

The USGS will give the tsunami alert if it is necessary. A Tsunami will emerge only if certain conditions happens: it must be on the water, below a certain depth and the quake must be higher than 8.

You can tell the strength by the time the quake last. That is why I knew it was far away

it most likely did not cause a tsunami unless it started a big land slide.

It's also irrelevant, save for media reporting. The moment magnitude scale number will be a far more accurate measure of how powerful the quake was, because it takes into account things like duration and location.
