The Chud Quake Command Center - Page 3

Oh, my God. And right at a time when our Chud-munity Tsarina of Seismology has been placed in time-out for a week!

There was a 5.0 quake in Quebec today. I felt a slight tremor at work in the Oakville area of Ontario. I was in the warehouse at work felt shit moving and the racking above swaying. I was scared a TV was gonna fall on me. Death by LG. Wouldna been so bad if it was a Samsung. But anyways... I guess people from my city (I live near Buffalo, NY) felt it as well.

Thanks for getting to that and posting it up. I was pretty busy today and then when I got to work, I was also busy. I've heard that people in Manhattan felt it as well (MSNBC said that "plates were rattled".. I assume they were talking about dinner plates and not the tectonic kind). Scary stuff... As far as I can recall, this is the biggest quake to hit the East Coast in years.

Anyway, I just want to quickly say that if for any reason there is a big quake and I have not posted about it, I'd hope that some other Chewer would take the reigns and keep us updated. I'm learning that for right now at least, I'm incapable of being the Tsarina of Seismology 24/7

I'm right on the border of Mississauga and Oakville and I didn't feel anything. I only heard of the quake when the radio told me that it had happened. haha

It seems like everyone in Cleveland felt it but me.

5.4. in Borrego Springs today.

Yeah, that medium-sized fucker sure swayed the hell out of my work building. I kept wondering what was going on inside of the apartment complex made of of brick next door. It didn't fall, so that was encouraging.

At least I wasn't like in the shower with the glass doors swaying or driving over a freeway bridge... that would have been nerve-racking.

Sorry, I didn't want to appear to be spamming. I checked in on the thread, and saw things were running smoothly here. You guys had updated about the quake, were getting first hand reports from Chewers who experienced it. I was really proud, but I didn't have anything to add other than "Good work!", which in and of itself I didn't think I needed to post. But, since I'm making this post now.... Good work!
I didn't feel this one at all because I was at motherfucking Ralphs FOR THE SECOND TIME IN AN EVENING because I forgot to buy cilantro, onion, and garlic.

The last big aftershock around here caught me buying some grocery too. There were some chili peppers hanging from the ceiling and they started to dance...really bizarre.

QUAKE STRIKES AT NATION'S CAPITOL

While it was only a 3.6, it was also the strongest quake ever to hit DC since they began keeping records of such things....
I actually slept through the whole thing and I live about 10 miles away from Germantown MD where the epicenter supposedly was. A lot of flustered co-workers at the office this morning though.

Obviously, the apocalypse is playing out just how Roland Emmerich said it would.

With all this quake activity, I'm worried about how a quake could impact the BP Oil Spill and potential Methane Death Bubble that I've been reading about. It has me seriously freaked out

Did your coworkers feel the quake or were they just unsettled by the news reporting?
They felt it; said it was pretty significant too. They were sorta baffled that I slept through it.

Of course, we're not really used to quakes in this area, so theres that.

Their buildings are probably not built to withstand quakes though, and this is the strongest quake ever recorded in the area. The danger is greater due to the construction methods, and also troubling is what this says about the rise in quake activity on the east coast

What's the over/under on the time it takes Pat Robertson to announce that the quake was God's wrath?

Iran stuck by 5.7 quake attack!

"Look out!"

While obviously any tectonic attack is bad news, I can't help but feel a sense of satisfaction about the fact that this quake will serve as the definitive repudiation for the absurd anti science that was the Iranian "boob quake" theory.

Good catch, Jacob. That's a rare and destructive magnitude for a quake (only about 18 a year of this scale are reported), but thankfully this one seemed to hit with minimal loss of life and damage to property

OK, I feel pretty shitty about this. This happened days ago and yet I've been totally AWOL when it comes to my TOS duties. You have my humblest apologies. I will do better going forward; the victims of seismology deserve no less

108 dead, 500 missing after 7.7 Quake launches tsunami at Indonesia

Their early warning tsunami systems (installed after the 2004 Tsunami) failed to alert those in the effected areas. Now more than one hundred people are dead

The biggest earthquake in 18 years hit the New York area at 10:46 AM Tuesday morning. The US Geological Survey says the epicenter of the 3.8 quake was in the Atlantic Ocean off the shore of New Jersey and New York, far away from anything else to do serious damage. However residents of Long Island reported feeling a low tremor. "It was a short rumble, a really low rumble," Smithtown resident Eric Weaver told the Long Island Press.

The bad news? Tsunami warning..

Anyway, As I have previously stated; despite my best intentions, I will not always be able to report every quake. The best I can hope for is that my efforts here at the CQCC help to foster an environment of increased seismic awareness at CHUD. As your stellar reporting today makes abundantly evident, in that respect my tenure as (un)Official CHUD TOS has been a resounding success (IMHO)

QUICK CQCC UPDATE: 7.4 QUAKE LASHES OUT AT NORTH WEST PAKISTAN

(board won't let me do a proper link: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/18/pakistan-earthquake-magni_n_810574.html)

Thankfully no one was injured, even though it struck when people were least prepared (1 30 AM Local Time)

Japan was just hit with a monster 8.9 quake.  Tsunami watches issued for just about everyone in the Pacific.

Doug Stanhope, too soon?  That first sushi one killed.

All this stuff I've been reading about the 5 most-affected nuclear plants(and one in particular) is kind of terrifying.

CNN is reporting that a meltdown may be underway at the Fukushima nuclear plant.

This tragedy keeps getting worse and worse.  I really hope there isn't a full-blown metldown.

It's funny(I'm one of those people who can find humor in most anything) where one guy in charge of Japan's nuclear facilities(or the one at least) was like "We're in meltdown!"  while the PM is in total denial. Things may have changed since I last checked...

Well now we're all terrified by the nuclear aspect, the tsunami was pretty fucking horrifying as well - but lets not under-estimate the power of the initial 8.9 magnitude quake that was so strong it actually shifted the earths rotation axis by 25 centimeters/10 inches - which can literally change time.

I mean... faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaark.

7.1 off the coast of Japan.

They just cant catch a break.

5.9 hit the east coast a little over an hour ago. First time I felt anything like that. Before anyone figured out exactly what was going on and got out of the building it was already over.

Yeah, it took me a few seconds to realize that it wasn't some subway car passing underneath here in NYC. Everyone was up and about chatting, in a tizzy; I imagine the scene was the East Coast version of when it snows in Los Angeles: nobody knows what the fuck to do. I live here because hurricanes and quakes rarely happen, and snow is easier to clean up than rubble. Weird. And Colorado got one, too. I can't help but feel that somehow, S.P.E.C.T.R.E is involved...

I was sleeping and woke up to the bed shaking. Thought I was waking from a seizure, which wasn't fun. Then I found out what happened when a friend texted me and was like "Oh neat!".

My monitor is top heavy and wobbled in a very disconcerting way. Also, my building is top heavy and wobbled as well, but it does that all the time.

The quake was not felt here in western nc. It was felt in Greensboro, NC though..about 2.5hrs east of here.

Slept right through it at a friend's place in Fayetteville, NC, but my mother said that she felt it at work.
