Ok I actually have to go back home right now, but I just wanted to say that I feel really proud of how smoothly things ran at the CQCC tonight. From Jake's post and link to my work with the tsunami alert and google map only a few minutes went by. It was great team work and I think it shows the potential of this place once I have high speed internet full time

Have a great night!

I've got a friend on Facebook who's in LA and he says people are stuck in elevators due to the quake, which was felt as far away as Phoenix and Las Vegas.

And it's been upgraded to a 7.2.

The main hit was in Mexico by the way... 7 is serious business as far as I know.

Thank Gawd this thread is here. I was out back on the patio when this sucker hit. A good 30 seconds worth of shaking. Fun stuff.

It's been a while since we had something like that. My son said it was totally cool. He's six.

Heh, some people in California were at a showing of Clash of the Titans and the quake hit right when the Kraken was stomping about on-screen.

Here in San Diego, it shook the earth pretty bad. Lasted about a minute and half. The kicker? Spilled my soda. That pissed me off.

Earth, you owe me a soda! Luckily the thread was here or I might be dead right now!

In SD too, and this was probably the strongest quake (and longest! Geez, I felt like I was on a theme park ride) ever. After about 20 seconds, you start to wonder if it's going to be the One.

I was thinking "Oh, its here. Hmm, this could be bad."

What part of San Diego? I'm in University City and still felt it pretty hard. It really wasn't that rough, just long.

PK and chewers with less post count, we have been hit with an aftershock, nothing serious I guess. I will continue to watch House and that nasty 13 and the sociopath patient (rerun). Mattioli already joked about this in the best possible way so I won't even try to match it.

I was watching "Lie to me" myself, Feral, and having a laugh at this thread when the aftershock hit.
I think thats the definition of ironic.

The easy way to know if the BIG ONE has hit, if your furniture is dancing over your broken body, the big one has hit.

I'll save Mattioli! All I need is four stout men to work the bellows.

Hey! I think I see his foot! Quick, someone get me a flashlight! And, goddammit, call Jessica!

p.s. - While we wait for the emergency team to arrive, I offer up today's XKCD comic as food for thought.

Magnitude 7.8 quake shakes Indonesia's Sumatra.

Quote:
A major earthquake of 7.8 magnitude struck off the coast of Aceh on the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Wednesday, but there were no immediate reports of a tsunami or casualties.

A Reuters photographer on Simeulue island, south of Aceh, said there was panic and electricity was cut off after the quake. Metro TV reported that people rushed to higher ground in some areas.

The quake was centred 204 km (127 miles) west-northwest of the coastal town of Sibolga and was at a depth of 46 km (28.6 miles), the U.S. Geological Survey said. It had initially reported the quake's magnitude at 7.6.

The Reuters witness said there were at least threee aftershocks.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a destructive widespread tsunami. However, it added: "There is the possibility of a local tsunami that could affect coasts" no more than 100 km (62 miles) from the epicentre of the quake.

That is serious business, JVC. From the reporting I've caught, thankfully it seems no one was injured

Is it just me or does it seem like there has been a marked increase in global quake activity in recent months? This latest one calls to mind the fate of Skull Island, a geologically unstable land mass which was swallowed by the oceans off the coast of Sumatra in the late 1930s

Period map detailing S.I.'s location

Meanwhile..

A 4.6 rattles Alaska (a state that was previously the epicenter to one of the biggest quakes in recorded history)

Sorry about that. As I've stated, I now don't have internet at home and it's causing all sorts of mayhem for me. My lack of reporting on the China quake had nothing to do with any bias I may have against the Chi-Coms

I am going to be staying at my moms house in a week or two for a while while she travels abroad though so that should be a great week for earth quake coverage
post #91 of 149
Oh, good. I was sort of afraid that I was missing something with regards to the Chinese tremors.

Because if it's not reported in this thread then I just assume it's a dirty stupid joke on someone's part.

BTW...considering moving out to CA. Should I invest in some major bubble wrap for my guitars just in case?

Last night I actually had an idea for a 'quake awareness saves lives' poster. My drawing sucks (Not only do I have nerve damage in my hands, but my illustrating skills were nothing special even before the nerve damage) but it's a good idea and I wnat to at least take a crack at it and maybe later on someone can draft up a better looking version

I mention it because my poster will feature a house on springs instead of a foundation. Your bubble wrap idea is sort of similar I guess

EDIT This is a great film if you guys want to see why I take quakes so seriously. I watched it over the weekend
It features none other 2012's Chiwetel Ejiofor once again fighting the good fight against tsunamis

"Take it from me, Chiwetel Ejiofor, this is serious business"

Hey everyone! I have a quick CQCC update, and I hope you will forgive the lack of a link. I am posting this up from my cell phone because a few minutes ago I was watching CNN when the text crawl at the botton said that a 6.1 quake has struck off the coast of Japan. Not much more is known right now, but the good news is that Japan has some of the most quake resistant buildings on the planet*

*no building is quake *proof*

By no means. Even a minor quake can have disastrous consequences. It depends on many variables, but an important one is the strength of the buildings. Japan has known that it's at risk for quake attack for some time now, so it's my understanding that they've designed buildings to be able to absorb the shaking without any breaking*. A 6.1 can be deadly serious, but I think it's minor enough to leave Japan (relatively) unscathed.

PS Here is that link

*unintentional rhyme, BTW

I kind of hate this thread, but the quake activity this year has been out of control.
