No wonder I liked Fighting Force so much on PS1. It started development as Streets of Rage 4.

I'm embarrassed to admit it, but after listening to a recent Giant Bomb podcast I just now got Phoenix Down.

Mercenaries 1 on the ps2 and xbox was originally conceived as a new Strike Series game (Desert, Jungle Urban, Soviet and Nuclear).

SO was Future Cop L.A.P.D on the PS1

Sooo, you're sayin i should get it from PSN? (If its anything like Nightmare Creatures but in an urban setting, im game)

I just learned that Donkey Kong was made from scratch because Nintendo had a massive ammount of out of date, unpopular cabinets (Radar Scope) that needed to be sold; Miyamoto decided to build a new game that could be run on the cabinets instead of fixing/improving the old one.

I've always wondered if the myth about the "Alien vs Predator" Capcom Arcade gane being based on a then in pre-production AVP movie is true; legend says Capcom was done with the game by the time the project had even settled on a script.

Wouldn't be the first time that happened. IIRC, that's how they kinda got screwed on the Little Nemo game (movie came out in the U.S. two years after the game).

And yeah, Fighting Force is worth throwing down money for. Repetitive, and I always did say all that game was missing was a Yuzo Koshiro soundtrack, but it's solid.

To this day, I still cant understand the Poison sex change issue in "Final Fight"; sure, they're trannies in the USA, but did Japan also adopt that?
Or is Poison a woman in Japanese releases?
One thing is certain; the US really outdid Japan in this case when it comes to weirdness.

At the time, Nintendo was worried about the implications of a burly ex-wrestler piledriving women, let alone (again, implied) prostitutes. The Japanese Final Fight and the Sega CD version in the States kept them women.

I know it's old news, but I've always wonder what Nintendo would be if they would not have told Sony to take a hike back when they were developing a CD drive for the SNES.

Guess that was the only good thing about Streetwise:

"Okay, its M rated, so now we can have Poison to beat up in this game"
"Uh, we've established her(him as a transexual already...you know, back in the snes days"
"Damn....what else we got?"
"Psycho Japanese High School Girls wielding Katanas?"
"We can work with that!"

Godammit, thats stupid.

Still BFF's with Square, I guess.

Another thing I found out: You cant get the best ending in "I have no mouth and i must scream" in Germany.
Also, Infocom "accidentally" never mentioned there was a rubber centipede among the "feelies" inside the box of "The Lurking Horror".

Streets of Rage had sequels.

Streets of Rage 2 was by far the best in the series, though 3 did include the ability to play as an elderly android and a boxing kangaroo.

If you have a current-gen system, don't bother. Well I mean unless you realllly want to play them with a Genesis pad.

All 3 are on the Wii VC and on PS3/360 in the now-$20 Sonic Genesis Collection(which has over 40 games. it's a steal).

Despite the "play as a kangaroo" thing, though, 3 is still ass.

Nintendo's rejection of Sony's CD drive led them to develop the Playstation. Had that not happened, the video game wars between Nintendo and Sega would have gone on. The Dreamcast would have had a much stronger run, and maybe the Xbox never gets released. I'm guessing that Sony's successful (and relatively quick) market takeover against the two industry stalwarts encouraged MS to give it a shot.

If you guys like these little tidbits, then start listening to 1UP's Retronauts. Start with the Mario episode from 2007 and attain enlightenment.

A friend came to the same realization during that podcast. I just laughed and laughed (no offense).

Care to let some of us who didn't listen to the bombcast in.

I get the Phoenix part, its a legendary bird that rises from death. What the "down" part mean.
Down. Ya know, like a down feather?

I didn't listen to the bombcast but I always thought this was pretty common knowledge. You're using a phoenix feather to revive someone.
What can I say I'm not a bird expect, I never heard the term "down feather" before.
FFIX had a 'Phoenix Pinion' and that was confusing enough for me to look up the various bird parts.

Not 'just' realised, but I was surprised to discover a few years back that one of my childhood favourites, the stylish French vector adventure shooter thing Another World (known as Out of this World in the US?), was given an obscure Sega CD-only sequel named Heart of the Alien. Unfortunately once I tracked it down it turned out to pretty much be a piece of crap.
Was it at least animated well? That's what originally drew me to the first one. Such a cool-looking game(and cinematic as hell).
It looks cheaper and more rushed (I'm pretty sure it's just imitation polygon sprites rather than the proper polygon style of the original), but it actually does a decent job of capturing that awesome look. I was really excited at first because it felt like jumping right back into that universe only seen from the alien perspective. But the gameplay is really annoying and brutally hard, and it has a miserable ending that I felt tainted the original a bit. I don't think the original designer had a lot to do with it.

If you're a fan it's probably worth a look just for the curiosity value though.
