Super Mario Galaxy 2

Thread Starter
New gameplay trailer- http://chud.com/articles/articles/23...AME/Page1.html

Anyone looking forward to this? I really dug the first one but never even felt the need to 100%- probably the first Mario game where that wasn't the case.
Same.

Looks fun, would love to play it, but I can't get worked up anymore. Plus I've got NSMB to scratch that itch.

As to your point of no new IPs, I mean Jesus, Nintendo. It's like Nintendo is trying to see if it can crash and rebuild again.

I'm still very, very curious to see when the Wii get to that holy moment of oversaturation, and mainstream America abandons that ship in a hurry.

The fact that the system is currently leaking money out of every orifice means it's not soon, but still.

As for this: it's another Mario game. I wish i could say I'm bored as hell with that plumber son of a bitch. But I'm not.

I'm excited too.

Sigh.
Wii's just over a year or so from outselling the PS2 in America, which is just frickin' incredible.

I just got a Wii a few months ago and haven't gotten around to Super Mario Galaxy yet. Suppose I should get on that.

Super Mario Galaxy is great. Bold statement maybe, but it's my second favorite Mario game after SMB3.
I should start a new save file and play it again. I have a game open with Luigi but he's a slippery bastard and not fun.
Looks exactly the same ...
I loved the first game, minus some frustrating camera issues. Looking forward to playing this. Even though it seems like "more of the same" each level in SMG1 had some new, fun gameplay element and so it felt endlessly creative. I can't imagine the sequel dropping the ball that badly.

I can honestly see that. I still put the original and World above Galaxy, but it's still the best game for the Wii without a doubt.

Yeah, he's fun to finally play as in a 3D Mario game after hearing so many rumors in middle school that he was in Super Mario 64 (I recall the most persistent rumor being that you had to wall jump into the princess' stain glass window in the entrance room of the castle), but he's not a lot of fun. He's more useful in The Lost Levels, but there's nothing fun about that game.
I loved Super Mario Galaxy, so I really want the sequel. Even if "more of the same" meant I got to play around in the Galaxy universe without anything new, I'd still want it. But they've added a couple new powerups for Mario, Yoshi (along with a few of his own powerups), and I'm sure there are a couple other new things that I don't remember off the top of my head. I can't wait to play it!

Confession time: I own a Wii and have never owned (or even played) a Mario game.

So, should I get this or get the original Super Mario Galaxy, or is there another game I should get? Or should I remain blissfully ignorant and keep playing FIFA 10?

Wait, ANY Mario game, or just the ones on the Wii? Because I'm completely lost how that first option even happens.

Was just about to say the same thing. If you've never played Mario Bros. or Super Mario Bros then you must download them from the VC and start there.

Otherwise Super Mario Galaxy and Super Paper Mario are good jumping off points.
I didn't like Super Paper Mario as much as PM: Thousand Year Door for the GameCube. It had a lot more charm and the audience watching every fight was a fun mechanic (the more you have in the audience, the better). Later in the game, they even played around with it a bit, such as letting the audience get eaten in a boss fight.
Can't wait for this - Super Mario Galaxy is easily one of the most fun games I've ever played, and even though this is ultimately more of the same, the creativity level looks fantastic.

Here's hoping that the soundtrack packs the same spacey symphonic epicness that the first Galaxy had...
Edge gives it 10/10.
http://www.edge-online.com/magazine/...mario-galaxy-2

Note: 10s from Edge magazine used to be something very special. These days not so much. Bayonetta got one earlier in the year.
I've got this preordered. Unfortunately might not be able to pick it up til the 24th, since I have to go straight to work at 10:30, then straight to a friend's house to watch the Lost finale til 11:30.

I'm playing through Galaxy for the 4th time right now, so yeah you can imagine I'm looking forward to it. I'm nuts for well done 3d platformers, and the original Galaxy is one of the best ever made. It might even edge out Mario 64 in terms of consistent level design and fun, though 64 has an edge on it for being mindblowing at the time, setting the standard for how 3d platformers work (that is still mostly in effect), and the wonder of exploring the worlds and stumbling across things. I find myself wishing Galaxy had at least a few levels that were wide open for wandering, where you have to discover various star goals, instead of funneling you straight onto the path every time.

I believe Amazon is offering $20 game credit if you preorder this game with them. That makes Metroid $30!
Ordered. Thanks for the heads up, Scott. I loved the first SMG, even though I still get flashbacks thinking about those damn purple coin levels.
The Purple coin level in Toy Time Galaxy was one of the most aggravating experiences in my life. I look forward to experiencing the same aggravation next month.
Yeah, I think it was the "Luigi's purple coins" stage that made me want to off myself. That was the only stage I never personally beat in that game.

One night we were playing, and I simply put a dollar on top of the TV and said whoever defeated it would become the proud owner of a shiny dollar. 20 minutes later... it was beaten. Best dollar I ever spent.

That Amazon deal is damn tempting, especially since first-party Nintendo games almost never drop in price.
Amazon hands out $10 or $20 gift cards with damn near every major pre-order now. Once you take the plunge on one you can get a pretty good chain going for future purchases.
I think I'll do my part, and even use the CHUD link! Nice it's at the top of the page now.
SMG is a good game, but it totally suffers from Resident Evil 4 syndrome - that is, it's good, but people think it's so much better than it actually is just because it's so much better than the shit that came before it. Shit that people loved, for whatever reason.

I think SMG2 won't get the kind of insane, over the top reception that SMG got as people more or less know what to expect this time around. Which is better for everyone (except Nintendo, I guess).

That said, there's no way I'm not buying SMG2. It's bound to be good.
Did you just call the previous Mario games shit in the same way the Resident Evil series was shit?
SMG is brilliant. The totally nail the gravity & planetoid aspect, but the game has plenty of other ideas in it. It's also got a great difficulty curve that starts off pretty simple, but by the infamous Luigi's Purple Coins it's a fantastic challenge.

The only down side is the stupid star lady and the hub world, but that's inconsequential to the gameplay anyway.

I can't wait for the sequel.

Get the pitchforks.
Did anyone else buy this? I picked it up today and it's sitting on my desk, currently unopened, and I'm heavily considering returning it for Red Dead Redemption.
Arrived at my house today. Naturally, I'm working late all week, but will post something once I play.
I'm only about 13 stars into it, but so far it's a hell of alot of fun. The camera is less problematic than the first one, I like the map system better than having to run around and find the next world, Yoshi's fun, and there have been a couple of nice call-backs to earlier games.
Yeah, mine's still wrapped. I think I'm going to return it tomorrow for Red Dead Redemption. I'm going to be busy as hell for the next couple months and to let off some steam, I'd rather ride around on a horse and skin bears than collect stars.
Got back home and just had to play for an hour or so. I love it already.

The best thing about the different map is that it no longer features that unnecessary star lady library.

STOP SAYING GOOD THINGS MANGY
Because I live in a shitty country I don't get this till July. (I suppose I could order an international version)
I picked it up on Sunday and it calls to me more than RDR right now. It's very pick-up-and-play, even more than the original. I'm up to World 2 and it pretty much hits the ground running--while it isn't terribly difficult yet it's also obvious it's trying a lot harder to kill you. I would not be surprised to find some ridiculously balls-hard levels later in the game.

Also, each galaxy so far only has one or two stars, rather than four to six. So there's just an incredible amount of variety. And the Puzzle Plank music is an instant classic.
I love me some Mario but I just got RDR last week and money be a bit tighter thanks to a new car purchase so gonna have to hold off a bit on this one, but I may have to donate some blood or something so I can get this.
This is the second highest-rated game at GameRankings. Wow.
Am I excited for it? Naw, not really. I haven't been excited for a Super Mario game since the third one, which came out back when I was in elementary school. I'll be playing Red Dead Redemption and Left 4 Dead.
This game goes into faux-2D quite a bit, and crushes NSMB Wii like a grape every time it does.

The reviews for this have been consistently gushing. Glowing across the board. Nothing lower than 9.5, but usually 10. The fact that more people on the boards are not excited for this is a testament to how little traction the Wii gets here.
I guess I can't resist the Gamestop $40 price + $20 GC for much longer.
I'm psyched for it, but decided I can't really afford it. Might unload some stuff on eBay(including NSMB Wii) and try to get this and RDR.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is quite fun, but it never ever should have been full price, but then again the same can be said for most games. I got my money's worth with the first Galaxy, and word is this one is tougher, larger, has more variety, and more hidden nooks.

Is this an in-store deal, or online only?
It involves a coupon code, so I'd guess online only.

And .... FIXED.

As for 'stale IPs,' when the game is as good as Super Mario Galaxy, does it matter?
Overlord's avatar has never been more applicable than when he's shitting on a Mario game.

I decided not to return this and I don't regret it. Charming as usual, great level design, linear level selection. And it's definitely the challenging Mario game since Yoshi's Island. I was cursing in frustration just in World 1 and it never felt that it was due to poor controls/camera, which is Mario at its best. I enjoy being pandered by all the callbacks and I'm told there's a pretty big one later in the game. Please don't spoil it.

When the games are as supposedly good as SMG2, I think calling it a stale IP is just flamebaiting. There is no legit argument along those lines to make against a brilliant piece of software. Rag on the console all you want but that has no bearing on the game itself.
This game is pretty awesome. I was worried going in that it would just be a rehash of Galaxy but that fear went right out the window after the first few levels. There is so much creativity and innovation in every level. It's pretty astounding.
