De-lurking here for a bit to say:
I'm taking my ass across the country, moving out to LA, and joining all of the other aspiring wannabes ('cause that's just what the West Coast needs more of), but that also means I'm getting a chance to drive across the country and see and do the things I wouldn't normally get to see and do.
Naturally, I'm planning to center my trip around awesome movie experiences and sightseeing. (It's a thing; if I'm going to go out to LA and try to put the last three years of production and editing and writing and producing work to use at something I love, I figure I might as well try and get at the heart of what that is. Namely, watching and thinking about "the movies," physically, metaphysically, intellectually, emotionally, and a whole host of other styles adverbially.) I'd like for this to be as much a personal journey as it is a sort-of temperature-taking survey of the cinematic experience across the country.
And also, since I'm poor, I'd like to try, as much as possible, to keep my expenses down. (Yes, I realize this is already a cash eating exercise.) Otherwise, I'm open to going and seeing and doing just about anything.
So I'm asking fellow chewers, where do I go? What do I see? What's an absolute must? The movie palaces and the classic drive-ins, where and what do I hit?
Right now my itinerary is rough and scant and open:
I'm looking at dates in late May to early June and I'd love suggestions for any and everything (as varied or as focused as you want) that's worth suggesting in between those three points.

Right now my itinerary is rough and scant and open:
- Head West from NC
- At some point, see a movie at the Drafthouse in Austin
- Arrive in LA and see something at the New Beverly.
