Fox Returns To The PLANET OF THE APES This Summer

I have never been kind with my words about Tom Rothman or Fox so if I contributed to CHUD being banned by them I apoligize especially to you Devin.

Nice Caesar sounds interesting and I look forward to seeing it. Certainly more than Independence Day 2.

Well, the bar was set pretty low last time so I'm optimistic about this one. At least there is a very clear example of what not to do with an Apes movie in the 21st century. It's also nice to see they're trying to tell the most interesting story they can rather than just capitalizing on the first film... again.

How will they brand it as part of the POTA franchise? Like That Twilight Saga nonsense? Kind of wish it had a really long, preposition-dependent title with "Planet of the Apes" in it.
I'm down for this since Burton has nothing to do with it.

Why has CHUD/Devin been blacklisted by Fox?
It can't be any worse than what came before it.

The Planet Of The Apes Saga: Origins: Caesar: The Early Years?

That kinda thing?

I'm interested in the thinking behind this, is the idea to tie into the original films? To ignore the Burton reboot? Or do they literally want to clear the decks and start the franchise all over again?

If they kept in the social commentary I'd actually be really interested in a new series of Apes films.

There's no social commentary.

Then... why?
Hey, Devin, I read somewhere that UK filmmaker Rupert Wyatt - director of a not-bad thriller called THE ESCAPIST with Brian Cox, Joseph Fiennes and Damian Lewis - had been hired to helm this.

Here we go - it was on Deadline, and Mike Fleming is usually a pretty reliable source.

This will be done with the best intentions, but the end product will most likely be watered down and out right terrible.

If another studio was doing this, then I would get excited.

How is that even possible?

I was about to say the same thing...

Even if you are going for pure entertainment, there is going to be a bit of social commentary added to the mix, even if by accident.

See the Dawn of the Dead remake for the answer.

ETA: Though I just realized that you were probably asking how it was possible for that particular movie to not have social commentary, not how remakes in general can drop the social commentary of the original. Carry on.

Devin, sometime I would like to see an advocate explaining the sites troubles with Fox, where the site stands with other studios, ETC

Thanks!

I hate to be the one telling you this, but it seems like all the goodwill you got for the "Haley as Rorshach" casting coup just got canceled out!

Why? Putting "Planet of the Apes" into this title will get them my money, moreso than Genesis: Apes, Caesar, or Rise of the Apes woulda.

Before I start: Let me just say that I was just giving you a playful hard time, and didn't mean any offense. If so, let me go ahead and apologize.

With that being said, I, and many others, find "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" to be a kind of cumbersome title. I mean, hell, even you admittd it was as well just now with "OOOOOH". Or, that's what I think you meant.

My personal beef is that it has the word "Rise"* in the title. As of right now, I can't think of any excellent movie that does**, and the ones I do know I find really bad. It's gotten to the point that it almost becomes an accurate barometer whether a movie is going to be good or not; similar to the "Red Font on a blank white background" posters/DVD covers I always see for comedies.

Back to the RotPotA***: As much of a grammatical burden that title is, I get it's branding purpose. However, I also think "Rise of the Apes" achieves that same goal despite being uninspired.

* I'm hoping that Dark Knight Rises proves me wrong.

** Know any examples off hand?

*** I really hated doing that.

**** Putting a colon in the title is just as bad as using the word "Rises" for me. So we both agree, I think, that a title like that would be a soup sandwich.

No, I got what you meant. To clarify, I said "OHHH!" Andrew Dice Clay style, not "Ooooh" Merv Griffin style.

Cumbersomeness: It is the second-shortest Planet of the Apes title.

"Rise": That's crazy. It's like saying because The Room is such a cataclysm that no movie should have "Room" in its title. None of that will matter, ultimately. If it did matter, I can think of several awesome movies with "Planet of the Apes" in the title, so by that logic "Rise" is trumped.

You'll get no argument from me that this movie looks to be one weird-ass way to reboot a franchise.

PLANET OF THE APES: RISE OF THE APES has more prepositions than any Steven Seagal movie title. FACT.

That's not exactly the title, but it has the exact same number of prepositions as 4 out of 5 existing POTA movies! No sense of history, you people.

Planet of the Apes that Rise?

What exactly is rising here other than my ire?  The planet? The apes?
