The greatest novel I've ever read. Perfect. A masterpiece. A cinematic adaptation cannot express what this book accomplishes - while some have tried, "Crime and Punishment" remains a fundamentally literary work, and trying to direct a film of it is like trying to recreate a Picasso as a computer-generated image.
Any other Dostoevsky fans? I find his work inspiring, and yet it's daunting to press pen to paper after reading him. The spirit of "Crime and Punishment" can be found in many genre films (especially that of film noir), but his novel transcends genre. If I should have to say that it's over a hundred years old, yet still a good read, well - you're in the wrong thread.
Chewers should be familiar with this book.
