The Polish delegation was flying in from Warsaw to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre of thousands of Poles by Soviet forces during WWII.

Mr. Kaczynski was not very popular person is Russia. Here in Finland are eye brows raised, Katyn ? Polish unpopular president and delegated dead ? Conspirasy anyone ? FSB ? Putin ?

Sad story. Apparently close to 10% of the Polish leadership was killed along with him.

My first thought is always Ivan Drago's brother, Putin.

He wouldn't have the balls to kill a leader who is part of Nato, would he?

When I read where the plane went down, this face was the first thing that popped into my head

"What?"

I can't be the only person thinking this

Yes, Poland probably has terrible airplanes (compared to AFO) and that could be to blame, but yeah... hard not to think of the Russian connection these days

The real way to know whether or not anybody like the FSB is behind it is how Kaczynski's successor behaves. There's no way they'd ever pull anything like this, with all the inherent risks, without already knowing and having made deals with the designated survivor. Otherwise there's little point. If Karzai ever decided to join the Taliban like he's been threatening recently and suddenly died in a plane crash you'd better believe his official successor would start out screaming from the rooftops that he's pro-NATO. How the rest of the country goes is left to chance, but assassinations don't do anything unless you've laid the groundwork for what comes after.

Kaczynski wasn't that popular in Poland, either. He and his twin brother shared power in what many considered unethical ways.

Still, it's terrible. Why the fuck were so many government officials all on the same plane?

Vladimir Putin will personally oversee the investigation.

Nothing to see here!

Inspector Putin is on the case, I'm sure he'll get to the bottom of these shennanigans... and discover it was simply pilot error or something.

Oh wait...

Quote:
Russian authorities yesterday insisted that pilot error was behind the plane crash that killed Polish President Lech Kaczynski, as Polish investigation teams arrived at the crash scene to carry out their own inquiry.

Igor Levitin, the Russian Minister of Transport, said the "black box" flight recorders had been recovered from the crash site in good condition.

"A group in Moscow has begun the decoding of the recorders, the quality of the recording is good, and there is every chance that we will be able to gain all information about the flight," Mr Levitin said during a meeting with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. All the deciphering work is being done in collaboration with Polish officials.

Alexander Alyoshin, deputy chief of the Russian Air Force's general staff, said the pilot had ignored several orders from air-traffic control not to land at Smolensk because of thick fog. "The head of the air-traffic control group gave a command to the crew to put the aircraft into the horizontal position, and when the crew did not implement this order, several times gave orders to divert to an alternative airport.

"Despite this, the crew continued the descent. Unfortunately this ended in tragedy."
Still nothing to see here folks. Move along.

I said move along.

I just thought I wouldn't post in this and wait to see how long it took before Russia was at least semi-seriously brought up as being involved. Under two hours. Impressive.

You guys are just itching for a civil and safe arch-enemy, it seems.
