Tea Partiers to Accusations of Slur-Slinging - "NUH-UH!"

Three Democratic congressmen — all black — say they heard racial slurs as they walked through thousands of angry protesters outside the U.S. Capitol. A white lawmaker says he heard the epithets too. Conservative activists say the lawmakers are lying.

What does the video show? Not much. Indeed, new interviews show that a much-viewed YouTube recording cited as evidence by conservatives was actually shot well after the time in question.

It was March 20, near the end of the bitter health care debate, when Reps. John Lewis, Andre Carson and Emanuel Cleaver say that some demonstrators, many of them tea party activists, yelled the "N-word" as the congressmen walked from House office buildings to the Capitol.

Stung by the charges of racism, conservatives and tea party activists insist it never happened. And one of them is offering big money if anyone can prove it did.

With so many media and citizen cameras at the demonstration, any epithets would have been caught on tape, says Andrew Breitbart. He's the web entrepreneur who released the video of ACORN workers counseling actors posing as a pimp and prostitute, and has pledged $100,000 to the United Negro College Fund if anyone provides proof of the epithets.
Breitbart's ultimate proof?

"It didn't happen," said Breitbart, who wasn't there. "This is 2010. Even a racist is media-savvy enough not to yell the N-word."
"Sure they were thinking it, but none of them were gonna say it aloud; there were cameras everywhere!"

God, I'm just imagining all of them standing around doing their best to hold back with occasional bleats of "NNN....AAAHHH!"

I'm really hoping that Bryan Lambert over at YouAreDumb.net tackles this in his next column, because it's always a glorious read any time he takes Breitbart to task. The thing in the Yahoo! article that really depresses me is this bit:

Quote:
Only 22 seconds of video have emerged from the time in question, filmed by Lee Fang of the liberal American Progress think tank. His YouTube clip — labeled as being filmed about five minutes after the crowd rushed Lewis and Carson — has been posted by Breitbart and dozens of blogs accusing Democrats of lying.

Fang told the AP he was standing "pretty far away" across Independence Avenue from the Cannon building when he saw the crowd erupt, so he hurried over. Fang did not hear the epithet, but he said he believes it was used. "The hatred was palpable," he said.

Conservatives insist the absence of racial epithets on Fang's video and the 48-second clip show there was no hate.

"If it didn't happen on YouTube," says a regretful Fang, "it didn't happen at all."
Sadly, this is all too true, and only helps to fuel the fires of double speak and misinformation coming from the Teabaggers, which then gets recycled as their talking points.

They were saying, "He's getting nearer."

I know I'm going to be killed for this, but...

Let's stop talking about them.

Seriously. I know we're not "the media" but we're reacting to them, and the more idiotic they act the angrier we get. The angrier we get the more these people feel like they're doing something about it, that they have a voice, that they're legitimate.

We all know that they're not. So let's stop pretending that they are. The more we react to them the more power we're giving them, even if it's just personal power. Let's stop letting them get to us. I'm not suggesting we all act with ignorance; it's important to know this group exists and that they're trying to enter the political arena. But until they come close to accomplishing something actually political (and I'm not talking about poorly worded/written signs) let's give up on caring about them for now and just watch them slowly dissolve.

We all know their choice of Governor was a joke. And then he goes poof, up in smoke, and we all smile and nod, knowingly. Let's just sit back, relax and not let the ridiculousness get to us so much. We're better than this.

One side says the epithet was used; the other side said it wasn't.

He has absolutely no clue, yet "believes" it was used. There are obviously people like Breitbart who "believe" it wasn't used.

The arguments for both sides are completely flimsy and basically falls to trusting what someone says. Which side you believe (or want to believe) ends up being how you will view this event.

My personal opinion is that it is absolutely grotesque to call someone by a racial epithet. I also think it is wrong to curse at somebody and use hate speech to demean them. We as a people are much better than that, but we resort to petty playground antics to make our points even in the most cordial of situations (Yes I know the situation in reference is not "cordial").

For the sake of the U.S.A. and the Members of Congress, I hope that it didn't happen. Do I know for sure? Will I ever?...No probably not. Who do I give the benefit of the doubt too? I don't know... My gut tells me that there were probably some crazed lunatics that did the wrong thing. Do I suddenly mark all of those there as racist? No, I can't do that. It wouldn't be fair.

I don't know if I can, man. But I agree with the sentiment 100%. I'm freaking *tired* of being pissed off about these douchebags.

I don't know, there's a part of me that things the time to simply let them blow themselves out is over. We're damned if we do and damned if we don't. Challenge them and we just convince them they're right. Lay back and they'll be convinced they've beaten us.

Are we sure they weren't just calling the Democratic party a bunch of naggers?

I'm fine with that.

That's why I don't know if I can stop talking about them...I may be physiologically incapable of letting the bastards think they've beaten us. Wyatt Cenac said it best on the Daily Show a couple of weeks back. "As I listen to health care opponents talking about rising up and revolution I guess my one thought is - bring it on. Let's fucking do this. I'm kinda sick of their shit."

ETA: Doug, you're a better man than me.

I don't know Dickson, that's kind of a intriguing statement if only for the fact that those on the opposite side feel the same way about left extremists.

"It's my/our way" seems to be the theme for both. It's hard for me to talk to extremists of either side because they refuse even for a second to meet me in the middle. I don't know if all news is worth talking about, but when it comes to the tea party stuff I just kinda shrug it off and disregard it.

Perhaps the tea-party types should start wearing those full length white cowls again, then they could shout whatever they wanted safe in the knowledge that their identities and racial backgrounds were protected.
