Whenever I start drinking heavily (like now), I always start yelling about how Zevon wrote "Desperadoes Under the Eaves" about me. It's one of my many charming qualities.

Yeah, "Desperadoes Under The Eaves" is probably my favorite Zevon song, and the one that makes me the saddest that he never got to write the symphony he wanted to write.

It's very likely my favorite as well, but he's got a fair number of songs I might say that about on any random day.

My relationship with his music has always been a tad bittersweet since I only got into it/learned about him when he was on his way out. Had he not been dying, I might not have ever gotten to know his music which would suck, but he'd be, ya know, alive.

I'm still getting into Zevon but anyone with the poetry and cojones to name one of his last albums MY RIDE'S HERE has my undying respect. I just love that.

He didn't know he was dying when he recorded that! (Well, you could argue that he probably knew in a spiritual sense, because the album just before that is LIFE'LL KILL YA*, which is probably in my top three Zevon albums. Confession: I don't really love THE WIND like I should.)

I should really stop fucking around on the internet and write the Zevon musical biography I've been fucking around with for, oh, almost a decade.

*The title song has another great opening verse: "You've got an invalid haircut/And it hurts when you smile/Better get out of town/Before your nickname expires/It's the kingdom of the spiders/It's the empire of the ants/You need a permit to walk around downtown/You need a licence to dance."

Getting back on topic, I was super happy they chose "The Indifference of Heaven" for that list.

That song wrecks me like pretty much no other, and is a pretty great summation of Zevon's philosophy. Life sucks, get over it and enjoy that sandwich.
