Deadliest Catch - Season 6

Watched the premiere yesterday and you can just tell this season was heading for a bad end like Captain Phil passing away. Keith and Jonathan having a shouting/shoving match before they even set sail, the captains ominously commenting on the unusually calm seas (Phil even says, "We'll pay for this" as he observes how flat the ocean is), a pot falling and nearly killing a couple of crew members on a new ship, and another ship going down barely a day into the season (although the crew was rescued). Very foreboding way to start this season off.

Also, how bad is it that Phil decides to bring his youngest son down a notch by sending him over to Sig's ship in the season when when he passes away? Now Jake doesn't even get to be with his dad on his last season crab fishing. The episode when Phil dies is going to be hard.

Well, he had his stroke while they were off-loading crab, so it may not happen until the end of the season.

I gotta say, I generally hate Keith and most of his shitty crew members, but Captain Jonathon really went over the line with his tirade and eventual shove. I love Jonathon (he and Phil were easily my favorite captains and boats) but I'm not sure why he got so unbelievably hot over Keith making a half ass attempt to steal one of his crew members. Still, it was fun to see Keith on his ass.

There's got to be something more there, and the attempt to steal crew put him over the top. Still, Jonathan's remark about "killing your brothers" was way over the line, especially since we saw how much that accident bothered Keith last season.

Yeah, I think Jonathan mentioned that Keith had always pissed him off, but there weren't any other specific instances I could think of where Keith did anything to him or his boat. And I can't believe Keith didn't immediately take a swing at Jonathan when he accused Keith of almost killing his brother.

How weird would it be if the captains swapping the Jakes backfires? I know Phil won't be around anymore, but so far both Jakes seem noticeably happier in their new situations. I don't know if that will be maintained on Sig's boat because Sig always struck me as a slave driving dick...but I think the Jake that's on Phil's boat will ultimately realize perhaps he shouldn't be looking to Sig as a father figure after all.

I don't think you get very far in that profession without a really thick skin, so what we might see as dickish behavior, a lot of these guys probably shrug right off.

I thought I read it was when he was offloading king crab, which would mean about middle of the season since that would leave the entire ophelio crab season to air.

Man, this show has been hard to watch the last few weeks. Particularly the last two, when it looked like Phil was doing better and everyone's hopes were up. It was almost like he was willing himself to get better to tie up his loose ends before the end. Really heart-breaking to watch Jake go off to rehab knowing it'd be the last time he'd see his father, and to see Phil tell Josh he wished he'd been a better father.

And the end of last night's episode, with the way it cut between the hospital and the fleet battling the storm, was incredibly well done.

Next week is going to be rough, but kudos to Discovery for the masterful and non-exploitive way they've handled this.

Wow. Watching the three boats react to Phil's death had me in tears. Give this show the Emmy now and be done with it.

The worst is when Sig commented to the new Cornelia Marie captain that the old man would hate something.. You could just see the guys whole demeanor change and Sig quickly realizing some shit went down. The last episode I saw before last nights was when they traded back the two Jake's. What did Jake Harris go into rehab for?

He was stealing his dad's pain killers.

Yeah it's been really difficult watching this for the past few weeks. And knowing what happened to Phil during the winter, I don't know how many times I winced at some of the dialogue. Like after Phil catches Jake, telling him they're done, that they're going their own separate ways when they get back to port, etc. Really foreshadowed what we knew was going to happen, and Discovery did a great job putting these episodes together. You really couldn't have scripted dramatic irony better than what the reality has been for the Harris family - and Northwestern's Jake too, for what he has had to endure with his family.
