Anybody on here affected by all of this ash?

This must suck.

My sister is currently stranded in Paris and my mom is schedualed to visit her in England in like two weeks. I am hoping this volcano nonsense clears itself up by then. I was going to get to stay at my moms and use her computer and high speed internet for a week while she traveled (mwa haha). I am currently not on speaking terms with my sister (essentially I've told the family that she is 'dead to me') so I am not particularly bothered by her volcano issues* but mostly I'm upset by how this effects my life

*I wish I had volcano issues in my life. That sounds so much more interesting than the mundane problems I routinely encounter

I'm supposed to go to London next week. We'll see.

No, but I normally look like this

I wonder what would happen if this goes on for a month or even a year? It probable will not, I was thinking that Laki lasted for most of a year, but after looking it up it seem that the ash cloud only lasted for a week or so.

QUESTION: Is it possible winds will shift and the entire east coast could fall victim to the looming ash cloud menace?

Didn't Bobby Jindal say volcano tracking was a waste of time, or something?

I think the Gulf Stream would keep that from happening, or at least keep it from becoming as bad as it is in Europe.

And just what the hell has taken this so long to show up?

They've started up a handful of flights again, but this could be going on for a while.

Our new volcano overlord has given us some of the finest weather we've had for a while though, and since i'm not flying anytime soon i'm obviously not really affected directly - few friends had to cancel outgoing flights and one couple in particular are "stuck" in the bahamas. Insured and being well looked after i'm sure, but I guess some people out there probably have businesses to come home to and run.
Not directly affected, but I was at a 3 day stoner/psychedelic festival in Holland yesterday (Roadburn), and they had a lot of problems with bands cancelling, esp. Scandinavian & American. Since some of those were highly exclusive shows for which people had travelled from all over the world to come see, that did indeed suck.
But as you can expect at a stoner festival: everybody was cool with it and didn't make a big deal out of it

The SeaWorld park here in Orlando is offering free admission to anyone stuck here because of all this. My wife ran into a British family yesterday who had no idea any of this was going on, since they're not due to go home until next week.

KLM has run some test flights with empty airplanes. It hasn't found any damage and has asked permission to fly its stranded birds home from Dusseldorf.

This whole thing has an indirect effect on me. The financial health of my airline is a big chunk of my personal financial health. All these grounded planes represent money that my airline isn't making on super-profitable intercontinental flying, so every day we're grounded is very bad for us.

If this cloud lasts too much longer, it could drive some of the weaker players into bankruptcy.

Thanks for the info! I know that when Chernobyl had it's partial melt down the radioactive dust and stuff circled the world three times before it finally rained on the north east (including my beloved Massachusetts) so I was worried about the Volcano

I'm no expert, that's just my educated guess.

I don't know about menace, but I think there will be global effects. St. Helens & Pinatubo both led to a year or two worth of global cooling, if I remember correctly.

Just realised my poor mum and her husband may end up getting screwed out of their 6 week trip to Europe they've been planning for nearly two years thanks to this. Was going to be their biggest holiday together basically ever.

Bit shit really.

Roommate's momma is stuck in Paris. See what happens when you believe in Jesus and volunteer your nursing skills to poor Africans?

A friend of mine from Europe had a pretty epic trip across America planned. If her flight to New York gets canceled she could be stuck with a bunch of useless state to state tickets.

You would think there would be some kind of ill-advised meddling that we could attempt to help alleviate this. Where's Bruce Willis when you need him? My vote is for plugging the volcano with a Looney Tunes style giant cork.

Rando let me know about a documentary he saw where a "super" man was able to plug up a volcano with the top of a mountain or something so apparently that's an option.

I hope she knows you can drive from state to state here. No papers.

A good percentage of Canada's music industry is stranded in St.John's, Newfoundland. The Junos (Canada's music awards) were held there last night, and this morning the airport has cancelled flights out due to the ash. St.John's is usually good for a party, but I can only imagine what it will be like tonight.

Forget Bruce Willis. Where's Dana Andrews when you need him the most?!

I loved that bad movie....and they had the most macho hero scientist name this side of Buckaroo Banzai.....Dr Ted Rampion.

The sight at the end of the movie of a chunk of the Earth spinning off to form a second moon seemed so optimistic....even though it heralded the end of civilization.

My father-in-law had a conference in Budapest that has been canceled thanks to the ash, and my brother's girlfriend had to cancel her vacation in Spain. Bummer on both counts.

Did at anytime, any one of them say, "What's all this, then?" Because that would have been awesome.

Sucks about everyone losing vacations - had a friend of mine who was supposed to leave on Thursday, and had to cancel the vacation by Sunday so he could go back to work. He & his wife were going to check out Europe for 2 weeks...

But, there have been some truly spectacular photos on Flickr lately from this. The shots of the lightning inside of the ash are incredible...

This when I really miss the Weekly World News, 'cause we'd've had at least four cover stories about Satan's face appearing in that by now.

They're not going broke. They'll have more money soon. They just ran out of cash.

May I suggest the soothing sounds of James Mason's voice to ease the situation? Between this and all the earthquakes, I totally want to see some weird subterranean monsters crawling onto the surface.

Well I feel menaced.

Anyway, my mom's trip has been cancelled. I am so mad I am even making an angry face as I type these words. This volcano is having a less than positive effect on my life so far..

Though, I just want to toss this out there...

Wouldn't it be cool if the volcano continued and we were forced to abandon airplanes and look for other means of transatlantic transportation? This seismic catastrophe could inaugurate a whole new era of luxury ocean liners. That would be really neat, IMHO

Coming soon to an ocean near you?
That would be interesting, but truly, truly awful for the world.

Ideally I'd want it to just be between the UK and the US. You could still fly to Europe if you went the long way. That way if you wanted to go to england you'd have to hop on board a steamer or ocean liner and have a nice two week cruise

It would also pretty much ensure that my sister would not be home for another month or so. (on well, I can dream..)
All kinds of price gouging by airlines, trains and hotels is going on. Makes you wanna root for the volcano.

I said this very thing to my wife today. The volcano is, for the most part effecting exactly one human endeavor. It just happens to be one society has become so dependent upon it's disruption is a near calamity.

I, for one, would welcome the return of trans-Atlantic ocean liner travel. These "cruises" that people go on, where they hole up in a floating hotel designed with zero sense of aesthetic grace, do not qualify.

Also, next time you're in Philly, you can visit the SS United States. She's rusting away downtown by the Walt Whitman. You can catch glimpses of her in the background when Parking Wars shoots tow victims at the PPA depot.

You and I see eye to eye on this one, Mr Green!

I think it would be very cool to have "cruises" again become part of our lives for purposes of practical travel instead of remaining the domain of "wave pools" and pointless Caribbean excursions.

If I were going to England, and the price was not too steep, I'd much rather spend two weeks on the Atlantic than 12 hours on a crowded plane ( that would no doubt ruin my equilibrium with my internal clock so that my first few days abroad would be spent in bed anyway )

PS I've never been to Philly but that sound really neat. It's the kind of thing that my dad would love, I'm sure.

There was a really great "dirty thunderstorm" (now that you've said that, I feel gross typing that phrase) photo on Digg about 6 months ago. Absolutely insane looking.
