"Four Nails in the Coffin" - the "highly-anticipated" print anthology by Mark Wheaton

Um, yeah.

So, (just barely enough) people asked for non-Kindle versions of my Kindle stuff, so I self-published a print anthology of the first four stories: horror novellas, "Bones," "Last Tuesday" and "Night of the Scorpions" and then full-length novel, "Sunday Billy Sunday," all under the banner of, "Four Nails in the Coffin." On top of that, included is the first chapter of "Shepherd," the just-as-highly-anticipated-as-this-print-anthology sequel to "Bones" (which is why this thing's almost 500 pages).

All four covers by artist Rahsan Ekedal are included as chapter headings and as it's a Royal-sized edition (6" x 9"), said covers are much larger than you'd see on your Kindle or iPhone. Rahsan also did the cover for the book, which you can see here:

And hey, why make the decision yourself? Here are a handful of quotes from folks Just Like You who got an advanced look:

“This is muscular, original fiction that marks the debut of an exciting new voice in the speculative/dark fantasy genre. Mark Wheaton is a T4000 horror writer. He brings a millennial aesthetic, a screenwriter’s eye and ear, and an imagination as wide, sun-seared, and American as Route 66 to this quartet of novellas.” - Michael Rowe, editor of the QUEER FEAR anthology series and co-author of TRIPTYCH OF TERROR

"Wheaton's writing is haunting. Days, weeks, even months later, you will find your mind returning to his worlds. Stephen King is no longer my only addiction." - Todd Farmer, screenwriter, graphic novelist, MY BLOODY VALENTINE IN 3-D, ALIEN PIG FARM 3000, forthcoming DRIVE ANGRY

"His tales are visceral, intellectual, and often grisly, but Wheaton never forgets that touch of humanity and wry humor which allows true horror to cut that much deeper to the bone." - Kenneth Plume, author, THERE'S A ZOMBIE IN MY TREEHOUSE

"Mark Wheaton is a magician. He misdirects you with accessibility while performing tricks of genius. Don't try to figure out how he does it - just enjoy the show. FOUR NAILS IN THE COFFIN is a shotgun blast to the brain. In a good way." - Gary Dauberman, screenwriter, SWAMP DEVIL, BLOOD MONKEY

"Mark Wheaton's collection of novellas shows off a sharp sense of the uncanny. Here is a storyteller who can take us into the weirdest of scenarios through the eyes of characters who are, however offbeat, always believable. One part horror, one part suspense, NAILS is a fully engaging and out of the ordinary reading experience." - Shara Kay, co-producer, forthcoming MOTHER'S DAY, VERONIKA DECIDES TO DIE

Enjoy. Pretty sure "Shepherd" will be out in a couple of months with the third novella in the "Bones" trilogy, "Alpha," to hopefully follow in October. The covers of those will be done by "Stuttering Hunter" cover artist, Tony Fleecs.

One more blurb, of sorts, as my pal Craig Perry (producer of the "Final Destination"/"American Pie" franchises) weighed in on the Lulu site giving it five stars:

"This is an outstanding collection of interesting, original horror fantasy fiction. Clearly Wheaton works in Hollywood, as each story bursts with clear, potent visuals and is powered by a relentless narrative drive. Yet there's a definite political/social commentary running through the stories -- not enough to make them polemics, but enough to make you think. But Wheaton is mostly out to tell a ripping good yarn, and he delivers such in spades. Buy it now and have fun!"

I think this is because he knows I still wear my "Final Destination 2" t-shirt to opening day of each new "FD" movie. Thanks, Craig.

Barnes & Noble (BN.com) is now selling "Four Nails in the Coffin" at the much more reasonable price of $15.98, 28% cheaper than through Lulu.com direct. Woo-hoo!

It'll take me a few weeks before I can order it, but I will.

RUE MORGUE has reviewed "Four Nails" in issue #102 (no link - print edition):

Four Nails in the Coffin is a self-published effort by graphic novelist and screenwriter Mark Wheaton (The Messengers) that collects a quartet of novellas into a single release. While the book’s two monster tales and the “deal with the devil” story are suitably entertaining, they are ultimately overshadowed by “Sunday Billy Sunday,” a genuinely twisted and engrossing narrative about a priest’s “Divine” transformation from trusted minister to mass murderer, which may just leave you shaken for days.

I'm slowly making my way through "Four Nails". At present, I'm about half way through "Sunday Billy Sunday" and, as much as I loved a dog being the main character in "Bones", "Sunday" is leaps and bounds ahead of that story. That's just, like, my opinion though, man.

The sad thing about "Bones" is that I'm too close to it to be objective as it's the most autobiographical thing I'll ever write. I hope the sequels work, but it's hard for me to say as I edit through them.

'dem blurbs worked! Arrived today from Amazon. Been wanting to read these even since they were Kindle-only and I was Kindle-without. I think I'd read just a book full of your premises, SJR.

It probably won't have you diving for your credit card, but Lulu just sent a "coupon" for me to "send my potential readers" that takes 15% off the book if you buy the thing from Lulu.com:

The coupon code is "BEACHREAD305"

It knocks off a couple of bucks off, down to $18.87 according to my laptop's calculator.

Made Bones and Sunday Billy Sunday my first two purchases on Kindle for my fancy new Droid X and it was such an incredibly smart decision. I feel like I'm ripping you off at a buck a piece.

Fantastic stories, Mark! That Fango review nailed what made me like them so much- incredibly well developed, believable characters. Sunday Billy Sunday in particular. Father Billy is such an incredible fascinating character, and the way you delve into his madness is exquisite. I still can't believe that you managed to take yet another "crazed killer at summer camp" plot and turn it into such a compelling story.

Anyway, just snapped up everything else you have on the Kindle store, can't wait to read them!

I'll be picking this up shortly.

Looking forward to reading it, sir!

Yeah, I really enjoyed "Sunday Billy Sunday", although (not to rain on anyone's parade) I felt like it flew off the rails a bit in the last third or so. My favorite of the four stories was definitely "Last Tuesday" (although my mind insists on calling it "Tuesday's Child" for some reason), although "Bones" is a close runner-up.

Was having lunch yesterday with the director who is trying to make this her next movie and she functionally said the exact same thing about one plotline in particular. I nodded and said, "Yeah, this guy on the CHUD boards said the same thing" to which she gave me a funny look.

Movie? Good for you, man. Go get 'em. You know I'll buy a ticket. And, yeah, that's too funny.

Hey SJR just wanted to post that I finished up Four Nails a few weeks ago. I should have commented then but I'm too damn lazy.

SPOILERS

-Sunday Billy Sunday was great except for Phil & Mark. Getting away the way that they did was one thing but not calling the police?!

-I loved Cindy. At first she was nothing special but screwing the hell out of the underage kid that saved her put a smile on my face. But why did you have to be so brutal to her?

-Last Tuesday was the only disappointing one of the bunch for me. At first I was really intrigued, I had no idea where you were going with the story but when it turned out to be a deal with the devil I was let down.

-At first Bones was kind of a let down. Starting it off with that really cool prologue was great but then came the zombies. I was hoping for something different and that's why I was glad that they started to mutate. Good stuff, very nasty.

-Night of the Scorpions was also very enjoyable. Loved the ending. It was so mean spirited, sort of reminded me of the end of Deep Rising.

Great reading and I'll be sure to pick-up more of your stuff. Keep up the good work!

Hey, thanks for reading and for the comments! I appreciate you taking the time as I am still, very much, figuring out what works, what doesn't in this. I've considered taking "Last Tuesday" down from Amazon here and there as it disappoints the most. That was the first one, so it's kind of in my blind spot. As for the Mark and Phil plot in "Sunday Billy Sunday," as I mentioned before, it's the first thing the producers/director wanted taken out when it was being decided if I or somebody else would be better to write the movie. I still like it for the book, but can see the point in doing the script.

And writing the third "Bones" story early next year ("Alpha") and got artwork back yesterday for the "trilogy" print edition that'll come out with it. I think once those three are done, I will actually know how to write a proper Bones adventure.

I think Last Tuesday is one or two drafts away from working as well as it should.
