Soundgarden Reunited

Thread Starter
This was discussed in the thread for Chris Cornell's last solo album (oh dear), but Soundgarden has gotten back together. They played a gig in Seattle last Friday under the name Nudedragons and audio of the complete gig has been posted online:

Seeing if Chris Cornell could nail even a small part of Slaves and Bulldozers was the test of whether these guys back together was worth it.

They failed. Miserably.

I don't care.

CRHIS CORNELL IS DEAD TO ME! DEAAAAAD!

Cornell just doesn't have the voice anymore.
Yeah, sad to say but he seems to be struggling here - hoarse and winded, faltering off key. The rest of the band sounds fine though.

Aaahrg. Underwhelming doesn´t cut it.

Jesus christ, yeah. I know the guy's been kinda falling apart, but after a few seconds of his vocals I just started feeling really bad.

I thought his "grunge for the mom jeans set" earlier solo stuff was the way to go. Far less embarassing than trying to rehash the past with Audioslave or doing the reunion shuffle. And the less said about Timbaland in this context, the better.

Yeah, Euphoria Morning was pretty solid, all things considered. Let's just not talk about SCREAM.

Meth is a helluva drug, kids.

I was opposed to this from the jump off, so this certainly doesn't change my mind. It will be very interesting to watch this unfold, because it appears to be shaping up to be the first real embarrassing reunion from my generation.

DRAWING FLIES indeed, guys. You fucked up.

Kim Thayil, report back to your management position at the Seattle Guitar Center.

So, word is this was a gigantic bust? A damn shame. Will make their set at Lolla a possible miss. Was looking forward to it too.

Was he doing meth? Honestly didn't know. I just thought it could be attributed to age.
I've heard that he's been tweaking pretty hard over the past couple of years. Explains the hell out of SCREAM, at any rate.

Did Cornell play guitar at all? It seemed like there was only one guitar on most of the songs.
What a fucking sadness.
If there was one band I wanted to see do a Stooges and come back awesomely on fire it was these guys.

Oh well.

It was a Cinnabon, actually.

Jesus, to have been a fly on the wall when a sweaty, twitchy, hollow eyed Cornell begged on his hands and knees and tears in his eyes for Thayil to come back and play with him again.

Would have been kinda heart-breaking to see.

Well, I think you all are being a tad harsh.

I listened to bits of the show, and all things considered it didn't sound bad at all. Plus that's a shithole recording.

But I mean, the dude's what, 14 years older? He just isn't going to sound as raw and powerful as he did wailing away back in the mid-90s.

They sounded good enough that I'd go through the effort to see them.

Jesus, what did Cornell do to piss you off?

Yeah to be fair I checked out some old live performances on youtube and the quality difference wasn't actually all that pronounced - e.g. Pretty Noose was always a bit of an ear-shredder outside of the studio it seems. The fact he managed to nail the high notes on on Beyond The Wheel is reason for hope I think.

If I thought Cornell had anything to offer creatively or emotionally in 2010 his weakened vocals in these live cuts would be excusable. At least Axl is still as legitimately venomous and batshit insane as he was 20 years ago. I can respect the authenticity and fury there and it can still generate excitement. Unfortunately over the past 10 years Cornell's done nothing but be supremely dull or extraordinarily terrible so I can't see anything exciting interesting or worthwhile coming from this reunion.

Pretty disappointing. I don't have anything else to add.

But this bit in the Blabbermouth article made me laugh:

Tickets went on sale for just minutes Friday. And you had to have some savvy online skills to get them.

"I just kept refreshing my computer this morning trying to buy tickets and I got 'em," said Travis Johnson of Bremerton.

I thought he sounded fine on "Beyond the Wheel", and then I listened to "Slaves and Bulldozers".

Hoo boy. Sounded like a parody. Maybe they really need to frontload with the hardest stuff for him to sing. I will say he sounded sketchy live even at their peak, to be fair.

Cornell, the person, seems so detached and different than who he was back in 1999. I almost get the impression that the music he played with Soundgarden doesn't interest him in the least anymore. He's settled for banality thanks to his infatuation with the popular mainstream zeitgeist.

Have to say I'm with Joeypants, I read this thread expecting (at best) mediocrity ................. but that live gig at the showbox is nowhere near as bad as it's painted here. Yes, Cornell does strain himself slightly at times, but this is their first gig together in a long time and they still have a lot of rehearsal to get through. You have to cut the guy some slack also, he's 45yrs old and simply won't have the same vocal power as when he was 25 - no singer does. He still manages to hit notes that many other singers will simply never reach.

For the most part, I thought the band nailed the performance and judging by the crowd reaction and online reviews, everyone else thought so too.

Cornell also gets a lot of flack for the musical choices he's made in the last 10 years. As a Soundgarden fan since 1993 odd, I can't say I've enjoyed all of his recent releases, though I did like some of them. But you know what? Kudos to the guy for looking outside the box. Many musicians just keep churning out the same material for 20,30,40 years ............. regurgitating the stuff that got them there in the first place. Cornell at least had the balls to go solo, to back to a band, to go solo again, and to flit between hard rock, pop and whatever other genre you could pigeonhole his sound in. He got a lot of criticism but at least the guy likes variety and is brave enough to experiment - I'm sure it's not easy releasing music when you know it's going to piss off a core selection of your fans, even though it may grab you some new ones.

For what it's worth, Slaves And Bulldozers sounded fucking horrible on the Pinkpop 1992 video. I got the idea that Cornell really didn't give a shit about his vocals on that one. I suppose it's possible there were some good versions of that tune on other parts of the tour, but I bet they were few and far between. The studio version sounds like it's pasted together from a bunch of different takes anyways, and there are double tracked parts. They tended to set an impossible to match vocal standard on the album versions of stuff from Badmotorfinger and after.

But yeah, there's only so much you can do after this many years of smoking and drinking and drugs and not giving a shit about being a good singer or artist.

Official video of 'Nudedragons' doing Beyond The Wheel at the Showbox. Take away the static and shitty audio quality of youtube versions and listen to this, sounds awesome.

That honor has already been claimed by Stone Temple Pilots.
