New iPhone found in a bar in Redwood City.

It was found lost in a bar in Redwood City, camouflaged to look like an iPhone 3GS. We got it. We disassembled it. It's the real thing, and here are all the details.

While Apple may tinker with the final packaging and design of the final phone, it's clear that the features in this lost-and-found next-generation iPhone are drastically new and drastically different from what came before. Here's the detailed list of our findings:

What's new

• Front-facing video chat camera
• Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
• Camera flash
• Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
• Improved display. It's unclear if it's the 960x640 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the "Connect to iTunes" screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
• What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
• Split buttons for volume
• Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

What's changed

• The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or ceramic or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound
• An aluminum border going completely around the outside
• Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution)
• Everything is more squared off
• 3 grams heavier
• 16% Larger battery
• Internals components are shrunken, miniaturized and reduced to make room for the larger battery

They go on to list all the reasons why they think it is real.

It's quite an interesting read, and if it is a hoax they've gone though a lot of trouble to make it look this real.

I'm not much of a cell phone freak, so I don't have an opinion of this other than I hope the Ipod Touch follows suit.

Meanwhile, in November 2010:

"Hey Mr. Jobs, the time machine works! Why are all of you looking at me like that?"

Don't fuck with Steve Jobs, is the moral of the story here.

I want to know what is happening to the Apple employee who lost the phone to begin with, the poor bastard. Probably stashed in a damp, dank dungeon being tortured.

If Steve Jobs was a politician he would be a dictator of the worst kind, and make Caligula seem like a wimp.

"Andre ... you lost another iPhone protoype?"

Well, WalMart announced they're selling the 16 GB iPhone for $97. Sounds like the dump has begun in preparation for the new one. And my wife JUST paid $199 yesterday for her new 16GB model. Argh.

Take it back.

NVM. Found it.
My wife will be pissed, but then she'll say, "It's not worth the trouble." I almost broke yesterday and bought one too, but I held off. It makes me feel a bit better to see that there probably will be a new one coming soon.

Also, Steve Jobs is hosting the WWDC this year, and has already said, "You won't be disappointed" about his speech. Big assumption is that he will intro the new iPhone.

I'm hoping for the iTunes-in-the-cloud that's been rumored since Apple bought Lala.com. Seems a good bet, since Lala is shutting down May 31.

I'm on an every-other-generation update path (went 1.0 EDGE->3GS) with my iphone, so I'll probably sit this one out, unless there are some REALLY compelling OS4 features that only work on the new phone.
Supposedly every feature on OS4 will work on the 3GS. That said, as an owner of the 3G and realizing the OS really slowed down after a few upgrades, don't be too surprised if things are not as snappy as they used to be.
Especially given the fact that the 3GS is at least twice as fast as a 3G, with the 4G (HD, what-have-you) possibly clocking at four times that.

New rumors are that Sprint will get the new phone as well, as it will be compatible with their 4G network. I don't buy that one.

Also, the "Select" button has been turned off on Apple's website regarding the current iPhone. Hope to hear something soon, as I am very ready to jump on the iPhone party train.

???

I don't either. How exactly is the new iPhone compatible with WiMax?
