Deep Cover (1992)

Just watched this the other day after watching this insane clip of Jeff Goldblum.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MEb4fCwc9U

"We'll have barbecue jumbo shrimp...you motherfuckeeeeeeeeerrrrr!"

And he just keeps shooting him while Larry Fishburne is just "AHHHHHH!"

Classic.

The movie was pretty good and while the rest of it doesn't match the weirdness of that clip, there are some strange but funny moments. Such as Goldblum staring off and saying to himself "I want to have my cake and eat it too" repeatedly. Anyone else remember this movie?

Remember this movie? I worship this movie. New Jack neo-blaxploitation at its early '90s best, with Fish at his cool-motherfucker finest, Goldblum at maximum quirk and a wealth of top-shelf supporting characters (like the gang-banger who quotes TERMINATOR 2 and then says "Get it from your local video store!").

DEEP COVER. Deeply awesome.

That gang banger was great. Fishburne went in to kill him and he just keeps calling him a bitch and then pisses on his shoes. Even when he's dying, his last words were "you fuckin' bitch".

A highly underrated movie. I still remember watching this opening night. The crowd experience was definitely one to remember.

We always talk this one up at The B Action Thread... With Moltisanti and I being particularly supportive.

My favorite part is when Goldblum pops Clarence Williams III and Fishburne starts going off on him like they were kids at School recess.

Ooooohhh... You shouldna done that Daaaviiiiidddd

And then Goldblum goes: But I diiiiiid.

It's definitely an underrated thriller and, unfortunately, Bill Duke never lived up to its promise.

A man has two things in this world: his word and his balls. Or is that three things?

I love this film and it's definitely an under appreciated gem. Haven't seen it in years but it stays with you. I can still hear Fishburn sobbing - Oh David... you shouldn't have done that, David...

Now I want to watch it again dammit.

ETA: Gah! Erix beat me to the sobbing quote. Sorry about that.

EDDIE: "I once knew a brother named John, who liked to dance when he got it on. He made the pussy do the Watusi, and she said 'God damn, this rhythm is strong'. Stay black."

BARTENDER: "'Stay black?' Nigga needs to stay off that crack."

Damn, I wish I'd written DEEP COVER.

Fishburne cradles a dying Clarence Williams III.

GOLDBLUM: Is this what's come between us and destiny? Is this it?

*shoots Williams...again*

Then he says something like "There. Now, get in the FUCKING van!" It was so cold.

You ain't the only one, sister. Huge fan of this movie, really don't know why I don't own it. Every time it pops up on cable, I am compelled to tune in.

As noted, this is really all about the performances, and the impeccable style that Bill Duke brings. The story has been done a million and one times, but it's nothing less than supremely entertaining.

This is also the movie with the hobo wipe, right?

Really fun flick.

Love that. Since it's a hilariously delivered food related line in a 1990s crime movie starring Larry Fishburne, I consider it a sequel of sorts to the King of New York double whammy (talking of course about "gimme 15 pieces a chicken, motherfucker!", and its callback "Hey Jimmy, you like chicken? I got some chicken here for ya. YA CHICKEN EATING MOTHERFUCKER.")

PS. For anyone who missed Nick's article about the homeless wipe first time round:

This is probably my favorite young Jeff Goldblum performance, and a very underrated flick. I kind of want to watch it again.

"Why do I love fucking black women so much?"
"Maybe it's a slave thing."
