Warners now has all LOTR gaming rights. And I wonder what, if anything, this means for DC Universe Online.

From the press release:

Additionally, the acquisition of Turbine provides Warner Bros. with access to a proprietary digital publishing platform that enables dynamic direct-to-consumer relationships, robust online merchandising opportunities and vibrant e-commerce functionality for online games. Turbine has also developed a social networking platform that can integrate their self-developed online communities with popular third-party social networks. Outside of the games arena, these platforms present unique opportunities for Warner’s other home entertainment businesses.

That translates into English as "Warner wanted to tap Turbine's experience with multiplayer game design and real money microtransactions." Owning all Tolkein-based gaming is a nice feather in Warner's cap too, of course.

Turbine has always been my second favorite MMO developers after Blizzard. LOTR Online is chugging along nicely and profitably. Their gamble with making Dungeons And Dragons Online free paid off big time. They know their stuff. I want to see what they can do with WB money behind them.

Late to the party.

The response to this from the LotRO gaming community has been quite mixed, but I'm generally in favor of it. Of course, there's also rumors of other MMO's Turbine is currently hush hush on, but many folks are wondering if this means they might be granted additional privileges considering Warner Brother's LotR game rights. For example, any events that reference the Silmarillion or anything outside the narrative texts of the LotR series, Turbine can't do anything with.

For those LotR nerds, for example, instead of "Annatar", we have "Anatherion" or somesuch, for the simple reason that the exact story of the forging of the ring is found in the appendixes and the Silmarillion.

I've found that LotRO's been pretty creative and clever with its use of ingame resources to recreate events and quests. If this means more money or manpower go into any of their existing properties, right the fuck on.

Maybe this is the catalyst needed to push MMOs to the consoles. Turbine has hinted for years about porting games to the consoles but never actually did anything. If they have Warners money maybe that won't be an obstacle.

I'd wager the big fear for a lot of LotRO players is an influx of microtransactions a la DDO.
