This, right here.

This was the most heartbreaking theme of the night. Roger hosed the company something fierce by not being forthcoming about Lucky Strikes as quickly as he should have. This would have forced them to take that account, Don be damned.

I'm torn, honestly. I don't want to see this get wrapped up by them landing a big whale of a client in one episode but at the same time I don't want them to lose the people they have in the office due to down sizing.

I loved "You inherited the account" and a big ditto on "I invited you to my daughter's wedding! I don't know why you didn't get the invite! fire your secretary!"

3 episodes left.. should be interesting.

Saw Bryan Batt at the airport by the way one day doing a pick up. He looks like Reed Richards. All I could think is it would be fun to see him in a period Fantastic Four movie.

Loved Sally's reaction to the Beatles tickets and Don's constantly making sure the tickets were on their way.

Perhaps Connie Hilton will return?

I also wonder what Lucky Strike will mean to Roger. If that's the only client he had, how can he continue with the agency?

Three episodes left. What an incredible season.

He's not an employee. Though I assume if he became totally irrelevant there would be an effort made to buy him out.
Pete's self-righteous rant to Trudy about people keeping secrets was so juicily ironic I almost couldn't stand it.
And yet he stood there and took the abuse instead of Don. He knew this would happen and he deserves a rant, at least. It was about time they showed Betty in a non awkward situation with Sally. Maybe the internet's cries of "worst mother ever" will subside a bit. All said people behaved pretty well this episode.

Pete took the hit but he now has something over Draper. Much like Burt cashed in when he forced Don to sign the papers... this will come back to bite him in the ass. Then again, Pete has never had luck with these types of things.. two episodes from now Don could just come clean and Pete took lumps for nothing.
Shit, totally forgot Burt knew!

He could have totally come clean to Roger and Burt, keep Lane out of the loop but at least save Pete some face.

Don could never come clean to Roger. You saw how he acted around the Japanese, imagine what he would say about desertion.

He had no choice. He wasn't doing Don a favor, he was preserving his livelihood. When Don talked about leaving, Pete was terrified. Losing his deal is a setback to the business, but losing Don would be fatal. All of Pete's grousing was just him making Don say what he already knew he had to do. It's his character to need clear recognition for every right thing he does - hence the dialogue with his befuddled wife.

I was hoping she'd further congratulate him for not raping any nannies recently.

Nice little bleeped fuck thrown in there too. Wonder if they thought they could get it on the air.
Doubtful. Breaking Bad used a silenced, "fucked" last season. They probably just thought the scene demanded that line, censored or not.

Ha! I was going to post that as well. So damned annoying. Five characters will be mildly surprised and/or aroused next episode! Tune in to see why!
The shit really hit the fan this episode. Secrets was definitely the theme -obviously gonna have reverberations through the final 3.

(So the rights to that instrumental version of "Do You Want To Know a Secret" must be cheaper than the real deal, right? You gotta be frugal at AMC. They don't have the budget of an HBO show. Or was the instrumental version supposed to give it an ironic touch? Yeah that's it, make the budget work for you.)

Roger has one huge secret conflict to take him through the rest of the season (and is it just me or is John Slattery looking weaker/skinnier/smaller this season, especially next to Lee Garner Jr this particular episode. It's like he's slowly fading away.

Lane has a pretty big secret/chocolate bunny conflict.

"Pete and Don's secret" is not over by a long shot. I think what Pete told Trudy (about the "honest people" having to clean up the mess left by others) is foreshadowing serious future trouble between them.

Joan's secret (She kept the baby?)

Don seems to be good with Faye (I mean compare her reaction to "Don Draper" to Betty's last season) but he won't be able to resist the young flesh (ie: Megan). There is no doubt in my mind now that he's gonna "schtup her". Whether it goes further than that....
Does Pete know that Don knows about Peggy's Pete Jr? When Pete cried, 'Why do you have to have secrets?' I kinda wanted Don to throw that at him.

He wouldn't know it was Pete's.
Don doesn't know Pete is the father of Peggy's child.

Have I mentioned what a joke the "On the next episode..." teases are? There should be a drinking game:

"Are you serious?"

"What just happened?"

"Do you realize what this means?"

"I don't understand."

"Is this really happening?"

EVERY. SINGLE. EPISODE.
Hilarious.

I think Weiner is consciously playing along with AMC brass "requirements", and making those teasers a joke at the same time. It's pretty well known that Weiner's extremely paranoid about having anything from future episodes leak. After the first episode this season, he even stopped all future preview episodes from being sent to critics.

It's funny, talking about Mad Men with my friends. If you didn't know, it could be mistaken for 2 things:

Talking about people we know, as in- "Its good that Don told Faye about his problem. It's a sign of growth or at least acceptance." "Roger's outburst was clearly compensation for his own problems with his accounts."

Or dishing about a soap opera, as in "OMG I knew Joan was pregnant and that it was Roger's baby."

Or maybe this show turns me into a girl. Either way, great stuff. This season so far is just kicking all kinds of ass.
Man people are actually thinking that Don took Megan to see the Beatles rather than Sally due to the look he gave Megan after looking at the tickets. Am I crazy, or does this just not make any sense and Don would have to be literally retarded to do this after Sally's reaction? Or did anyone else interpret it that way?

I love the show and I love analyzing the show but this hits me like some "Don't forget ze cream"-type overthinking shit.

You guys saw Megan, right? What guy isn't gonna check that shit out?
Blind ones? She was putting on lipstick, for god's sake, I'd be staring too.

But yeah I just thought the tickets thing was a reach.

The thought crossed my mind as I was watching the scene, but after the credits started rolling, I dismissed the idea. Holy hell, that would be a dick move.
Same here. Like others have pointed out, we were set up to believe the Beatles tickets would be a big issue in the episode, and at the beginning they were Don's biggest problem. So by the end, these things that were once so important are now pretty insignificant.
There are times when people are maybe reading a bit too much into stuff.
Seeing Jessica Pare was one of the highlights of Hot Tub Time Machine. But I'd be really surprised if Don started banging Megan. He already went that route with the secretary before Blankenship and that was a minor disaster.

Holy crap. THAT'S Megan??? I never put two and two together.
by my count thats the 1st 'fuck' that Mad Men has had in the series. Breaking Bad has had at least 3. So it seems that AMC is not totally against the use. It just has to be really earned. Looks like we might be treated to a few on The Walking Dead.

anyway. this week was good. At first i totally thought Don was gonna fuck things up with sally and the beatles tickets. But that problem was put in perspective when the G-men came around.

and to all the Betty haters: SEE, Betty can act like a adult too.

Seeing her amusement at Sally's shrieks over the Beatles was a nice surprise; I totally expected her to react with petty jealousy.

Pretty good article that might be of interested to some.

Does anyone think Don will threaten to play the "gay card" on Lee Garner once he finds out about Lucky Strike? Not that he has any proof, but he might still try to rattle him if Don feels that there's nothing to lose.

Excellent article. Thanks!

It addresses most of the complaints some friends had of the shows use of its sole black character.

I think Roger's 'After all the lies I've told for you?!' was the gay card.

Thought that was more about how smoking can kill you.

"...congratulations..."

This season hit it's stride last week and broke into a run this week. I didn't even think about all the other companies pulling out in fear.

Scouting potential clients at a funeral really drives home how desperate they've become. I can't imagine how they're gonna pull themselves out of this one.

Fucking Don. You had to, didn't you? At least Megan knows when enough was enough. Hopefully.
Is it possible that Don blackmail Lucky Strike with what he knows about Sal? I guess that would be too obvious.

Is Don hitting the reset button? Is Faye the new Betty now that he's having another affair? I said it before, I'll say it again; what an asshole.

Good lord, I'm worried about Roger.
I'm worried about Roger as well. I'll be damned if Slattery isn't a tremendous actor. I wonder what will happen if the rest of the partners find out about Roger's conversation with Lee Garner, Jr.

I loved Don and Peggy's exchange ending with Peggy's, "I'm not worried." I also loved Pete's "Do you know who you're talking to?" and the entire scene surrounding it.

But my favorite moment of the night had to be Don and Faye: "I'd do it for you." "I wouldn't ask you to."

And when Don kissed Megan I actually said out loud, "NO! Bad Don! BAD DON!"
I think my favorite moment was Pete's line about using the word premature in the nursing ward. It was just a throwaway line, but somehow so perfectly Pete (quintessentially Campell?)

The Megan thing has to go somewhere, doesn't it? Can it simply be Don making the same mistakes over again? I was at least glad she initiated it, considering I hated the interpretation that Don was leering at her at the end of the other episode.
But, in fairness to Don, how difficult would it be to turn down Jessica Pare throwing herself at you with no strings attached? You'd need the strength of Atlas and the erectile dysfunction of Bob Dole.
Oh, Don, you dumb sonofabitch. Love the mirror image of both Don and Roger cradling their "loved ones" on the couch both wracked with misery and guilt. And, yep, Roger ain't going to make it to the end of the series, for sure.

I really thought that Peggy was going to flip out on the client who licked his lips at her, esp. after just getting propositioned by Stan.
I've been dreading Roger dropping dead for awhile now. The only thing is Slattery is just too much of an asset to the show to just 86 like that, no matter how fitting an end it would be for his character.

I think he's gonna marry her. She's a (seemingly) empowered free spirit woman with a strong motherly side. She's young. She's ambitious. She could be Peggy and Anna combined (Plus Jessica Paré).

Anyhow, Faye predicted marriage for Don early in the season, but it's not looking like she's gonna be the one. Of course, Weiner could be setting up false expectations/red herrings.

If Roger commits suicide/dies/has another heart attack, it should happen in the next episode (Slattery will be directing). And Roger has a point that he was pefectly happy/content before Don came to him about the new agency. He could have cashed in and just cruised for the rest of his life with his young bride. Even if he was deluded/in denial about himself/life, he was "happy".

Maybe Pete will end up leaving. It doesn't have to mean that he's leaving the show. But it could shake things up for his character. Plus the rival agency could get showcased more. Which could be interesting.

Glad to see more Sally for next week.
I LOVED Peggy's reaction to learning she had lipstick. She just shrugged it off. Truly a woman in love with no concerns.

Roger will end badly, that's for sure. Plus, right now, he's useless to the agency. He doesn't have any clients.
Yeah, it's hard to imagine a scenario that doesn't have Roger dead in the next couple of episodes. His character is dead-ended. He has no clients, nor the inclination or ability to get more. He has no real chance with Joan. He has no friends at the firm, none good enough to bother telling them the truth when it could have mattered. He has no future.

The scene of him on the couch with his happy, proud and oblivious wife was just sad.

I'm going to place my bet on him getting drunk and driving his car into a body of water.
Yeah, not gonna be surprised if Roger kills himself. Also (not that this really makes THAT much of a difference storywise), isn't the next ep the one Slattery's supposed to direct?

Also, holy shit this episode.

EDIT: Ha, missed machiav's post. My bad!

What if they throw us all for a loop and it's Cooper who dies?
Cooper went to the office in his pajamas. I love the man.
Plus he looked like Colonel fucking Sanders when he was reading the memo at the office. And mega-sick burn on the line to Roger as he was leaving the office.
I'm just saying, everybody expects Roger to buy it. Wouldn't put it past the show to throw us a curve.
To follow Mr. Dickson's line of reasoning... On the next Mad Men

'Oh No!'
'Is he all right?'
'Peggy, why are you crying?'
'Poor bastard, died right there on floor of the cab.'
'Freddy just told me. What are we going to do?'
'Pardon ma'am. Are you Ms. Campbell?'

Except Cooper dying really isn't any more of a curveball than Roger. They've both been rendered obsolete and, in different ways, in failing health.
Maybe Don will die...
Maybe he'll become the friendly ghost that haunts the office helping Peggy rise from copywriter to head of creative.
