Pretty interesting interview here. I'm actually dying to see this Jackson-centric doc.

Interesting. Count me in the camp who was not impressed with the bluray theatrical set and will wait for the extended editions (and beyond). Also I have a strong suspicion that we will see Aragorn battling Sauron at the end of ROTK instead of the troll.

That part, I doubt, but I can definitely see Peter putting together a "Director's Cut" of some kind together.

I'm just praying that involves cutting out the extra Paths of the Dead material that ruined Aragorn showing up at Pellenor Fields.

Which will be cool only if done Eastern Promises-style, balls and all.

That does sound very impressive.

I am more than just curious about all these scenes they filmed where they veered really far away from th book, like Arwen fighting at Helms Deep. Considering the qualitiy of the EE´s I have no doubt that these releases will be worth the money eventually.

Yeah, I would love to see a lot of those deleted scenes. However, I really don't need them edited into the film. I guess if they utilized some sort of branching to do that, I'd be cool with it. But I think the EE's are pretty good as they are. I don't necessarily need more monkeying with them unless he's had some REALLY good ideas over the years.

Yeah, I agree. I do not want them incorporated into the movie itself either.

And I do hope that the EE will be kept like they are - otherwise we might argue the ultimate cut question for generations and even the neverending Lucas discussion will be pale in comparism.

Brilliant article, thanks for the heads-up Joey.

I dunno. I feel like if Lucasfilm were to announce they had deliberately held back "the best" stuff for a future STAR WARS or INDIANA JONES re-release after putting out what was considered a pretty definitive set, people would be screaming bloody murder.

And then what will they miraculously find as the "really best stuff" for the next ultra-definition format? Which will then be followed by the "no seriously, all that previous best stuff was just a warm-up for this...the REAL gold we've been depriving you of" for when we're experiencing our home entertainment by way of BRAINSTORM helmets.

I don't mind double-dips as much as some, especially if there's a good reason for it. But I think the previous 18 discs worth of LOTR was plenty sufficient for me.

Yeah, i also thought that. Fuck them if they really held back. Those extended editions were supposed to be the definition of home entertainment.

I do recall them stating this even back when they released the EEs originally though. I can't remember where, but I recall Jackson saying they still had "tons of material" that they couldn't fit onto those releases, and maybe they'd save it for another release years down the road. Might've been in a commentary.

Granted, that doesn't change the way you feel about it, which is understandable.

The only allowance I give this team is that the EEs were so packed full of stuff, it might've seemed like overkill at the time to add even more.

Agreed. Here is the other thing about it New Line dumped a lot of cash into these films if there is footage they would go back with and tinker around I can understand how they put it off.

Also the films feel so complete anyways that there isn't much anticipation about the footage.

Also those of us who really paid attention to each successive film realized PJ was letting it get away from him and indulging himself with longer and longer scenes instead of keeping the editing/pacing right.

That's what it seemed like to me. The FOTR theatrical cut, I think, is really solid. In particular the beginning of the film When Gandalf and Frodo go over the hill and you see Hobbiton for the first time was one of the best moments in that entire series. The Concerning Hobbits prologue spoils it.

Has anyone seen the blu-rays of these yet? I heard mixed reviews.

Yes they are not impressive.

Beg to differ. Fellowship has its issues, but nothing world ending. Two Towers looks a little soft in spots, but much better than Fellowship. ROTK looks fantastic. Sound is fantastic on all three.

Only real complaint is getting the two cases out of that cardboard shell is such the fucking bitch.

I have both TE and EE sets on dvd and thought the TE bluray was a great upgrade (I think the TE versions are the superior cuts mind you).

It all depends on your level of A/V geekery. Personally, I've only watched Fellowship at this point, but it looks good. Far better than the DVD versions, but not quite the same level of "pop" that you usually expect from a Blu Ray.

Sound is AMAZING. From what I understand the 2nd two films look much better, too.

My very first neighbor complaint as a result of a Blu Ray disc was on ROTK. When the two oliphaunts collided, the bass shook my upstairs neighbor's furniture.

That sucks, because the first one usually "breaks the seal" and any slight detection of noise/vibration by them will cause further complaints.

Didn't Wood do a tape of himself on his knees dressed up as a hobbit in hopes of getting the part? I wanna see that.
There's also a massive gag reel, including a bit with Hugo Weaving showing up to give Aragorn Anduril as Agent Smith. I've been dying to see that for years now.

Wow. That was something of shot across the bow there. Hopefully some public pressure will lead to a better product for the fans.

Pinch the cardboard shell by the top and bottom and shake.
