The Fourth Protocol (1987)

I love that Sky now have a classic film channel, it's helping me catch up with all the great movies I have missed.

The first thing I took away from this film was that it the best audition tape Pierce Bronsan could have made for the role of James Bond. He is a proto Bond throughout this movie and works perfectly as the cold Russian Spy.

Michael Caine is great as the MI5 agent caught up in the centre of all of this, everything he does from the Initial burglary scene to his constant slagging off of his superiors is just a joy to watch.

In an era where all thrillers have to be done in the "edge of you seat" style, it was a joy to watch a slow burn flick rounded out with a stellar British cast (and Ned Betty).

Has any one else seen this film?

(spoilers?)

I'm murky on this one, but if this is the film where Brosnan bangs his contact Joanna Cassidy then kills her, I remember being pretty impressed when I caught it, my god, 20 years ago on HBO. I recall the scene where he assembles the bomb as being fairly riveting.

I'm probably confusing this with another film, but is there a subplot where Caine is saddled with his son throughout the mission?

Thats the right film, on both counts. In fact you are given the impression at the end of the film that he gives up the spy life for his son.

The whole film is a bit like that bomb scene, although there is no action every beat is edge of the seat stuff. They really don't make thrillers as good as this any more.
