SHADOWLANDS - d. Attenborough

Ugh! This was just awful. Dreary and dull, a romance with zero romance. The leads were leaden and exhausted looking, and when their eyes met the palpable emotion was distaste or perhaps loathing. I doubt Winger (BTW, winging is UK slang for 'complaining)) and Hopkins even enjoyed each others company

A stuffy, self important mess. Tolkien seems like the more interesting fantasy writer to base a film around (what with his WW1 experiences influencing his work), but all the same I'm sure there was a better movie to be made from the tale of CS Lewis than this one.

Anyone else seen it?

PS According to the film CS Lewis hated his name 'Clive'

Clearly he never saw CHILDREN OF MEN

That sad truth is, the Attenborough film didn't hold a candle to either the stage play it's based on or even the TV-movie (starring stage great Claire Bloom as Joy) the play was based on, all written by William Nicholson - who, despite this, still got Oscar-nominated for the script (and later, for co-writing "Gladiator!"). Seeing the thing on stage is a revelation. Seeing this movie is a snooze.

That said, I'd raise the fantasy-author-bio-pic ante with one on the life of Roald Dahl. There's a great book - "The Irregulars: Roald Dahl and the British Spy Ring in Wartime Washington" by Jennet Conant - about Dahl, Noel Coward, Ian Fleming and Sir William Stephenson (the Man Called Intrepid) that details Dahl's adventures in the RAF, but also in British Intelligence in helping to lure an isolationist America into war against Germany, including the fabrication of propaganda shit like alleged "Nazi maps" that detailed Hitler's plans to conquer America and the like.

I really liked this film and found it pretty interesting. I'll have to look up the play or tv movie now as well thanks SJR!
