The Official CHUD iPhone app thread

Well here we go guys, the official app thread. I'll post some updates here on how the app is going and what not. I'll post some nice pictures as well. Post your thoughts, requests and what not.

Here you can find some videos of the app working in simulators and actual devices. Check the video responses from time to time, you might find something new every so once a while.

Soon. Testing and lots of stuff to make sure the app is awesome takes time, but there is a very primary basic version already on a phone of the developer, so it will come.

Its a free app, but yes there will be ads on the app. The money supports CHUD and my cocaine habit (okay just kidding).

How close are you to the final version?
Its a program, and always involving. Any picture is not really final because things can always change. Lots of tinkering is always being done.

Random Updates:

Ummm at most August you will get an update on this. Life threw me a lot of lemonades recently is all I can say.

So an update:
all those pictures above, horribly outdated, the app has transformed quite a bit.

FORUM! - It'll be there.

Rotational view - Hold it like you like, but we're not responsible for signal loss. Oh and yes we're adding the ability to view spoilers, no longer have to copy it and paste in notes.

Swipes - move around the app faster. Pull up (or left, right, down) to get things.

GPS - ???! It's going to be used for something, not telling (Will work for those that don't have it).

MENU - Now very similar to how AP Mobile and CNN has it. No longer have to pull it up. Just swipe, click.

Release date: Coming sooner than you think

Even without the GPS, you will have the same functionality as long as you have an internet connection.

edit: The only thing you may not be able to do is take a photo and submit it, but you will be able to use one that's already in your library.

What you see here is the work in progress:

Yes it rotates, yes the articles are going to be formatted to something similar to the previous look. The menu above is scrollable to access what section of the site you want to see, and it loads it below on the fly. Oh the bottom will be space for the ads, and that extra space on the side will allow you to do the swipes to access other things like the FORUM, MENU (saved articles, that GPS toy, settings, contacts etc), and some other misc goodies.

The middle of the screen fades in after a delay so the background can be replaced with a custom image, so when CHUD has a movie sponsor, you'll have one too.

Thinking of adding a shake to get a random article.

Some polish goes a long way.

Well the top logo had to shrink, needed to space for buttons and making the look seemless. Okay, so we might go into some sort of hibernation till the app leaks, but I may leak a few photos. Just not as crazy as today.

So this will be the last text post but as things are getting closer to being locked down, I thought I'd really get the hype going and give you some very specific things about whats there:

-You can kill aliens
-Forum!
-GPS: You can possibly run into fellow chewers, it just might get smelly
-It sounds good enough to drive you crazy.
-Easter eggs? Oh hell yes
-Facebook that Twit your status.
-Will someone please think of the children? Fuck, that's your job.
-Oh you can read those articles they post about stuff.
-Uncle Mitch tells you things
-To those that have a place to keep a ship, you might want to see that thing about eggs.
-Things might get a little pushy.
-Cows
-The opening to Mad Men and maybe the credits to Ocean's 13 might of had an influence somewhere.
-You can score with this app, and then brag about you did.


Okay random technical stuff:
-iOS 4.0 optimized with instant resume and HD graphics support, but will work with lower 3.0.
-GPS stuff will work on an iPod touch, you just might have a harder time, unless you're damn smart.
-Release will be around a lil while after the new CHUD launches, sorry I can't control the Apple approval process time.

One more thing:
The app is meant to be fun, addicting, mobile and informative. Still, the main site will exist and could never replace it. It's just an option for on the go. Do support the site by clicking on ads.

Oh and all you Android lovers, notice we call it Chud Mobile now...

Yes, I'm still toying with some settings to let you guys enjoy the fun a little easier, but without giving much away, you guys will still be able to participate.

Maybe we might bypass that and release it directly?! Oh snap did I reveal something. Having a Kyle Reese moment, one hypothetical future.

There will be a censorship mode, but it's being submitted default off.

I think if you don't want your kids reading something, then that's your control, and you can enable it. It's also customizable in the sense, if "NSFW" popped up in the topic title, you can enter that word into the filter list. It will hide the article. Then when you get home, disable it.

If Apple feels all rotten about it, I'll try to submit it again with it turned on, but you can disable it right away.

If they still feel stupid, I might need to reflect, make a choice I don't want to, and maybe you Android users might get some good news.

I'm hoping they just get distracted by other things, really the stuff you guys are used to, is maybe just 1/5 of the app. 4/5 is probably all new content/features.

I don't want to edit out the beer from Uncle Mitch.

Oh and what didn't make it into the app:
Easter Egg: Uncle Mitch drinking game. You move you device in suggestive ways mimicking onscreen patterns. Chug, Chug, Poor for the Hommies, Chug, hold the screen facing the ground and shake and tap that moving button in time for the multiplier (it adds liquor and things do get easier, but if your blood alcohol content hits a certain level, you die, so you have to balance things with water, IV bags and food).

Of course we have to think of the children...

and smart programmers never let code go to waste...
