Maybe it just might appear in the App Store without any notice . We do intend to cause a riot of goodness.

Only warning: Please be careful with the GPS section. I purposely didn't allow it to run in the background out of we have enough bad drivers out there.

Now if you excuse me, I have some hunting to do, too bad you can't join me..........................................yet

edit: I figured out something that will help A LOT with approval 1st shot, and the CHUD crew won't have to worry a thing about their articles.

edit edit: So if you want to know how I'm feeling about the app, lets just say I coded a lot of things separately, and now joining them together. It's like the 1st time I saw Devastator come together, or when a kid walks the 1st time... ...but more Devastator, or maybe I'll settle for a baby named Devastator learning to walk.

I'd much rather buy a version sans ads and give the money directly to you guys. So if coming out with a version with no ads but costs even something like $10, I'd buy it (or subscribe for some monthly fee).

So is Nick's ability to track our movements step 8 or step 9 in his quest to turn us all in to murderous cyborgs?

I'd pay almost 8 dollars ($7.99 USD) for a version without ads, for what it's worth

And.. there is a risk APPLE might not approve the app? That is horrible. What would happen in that situation?

Well the ads support the site, no ads, no Chud.

Yeah there is a risk, as of right now we plan to submit the app with 0 censorship, because it sucks. If we get rejected because of that, appeal it. If still? It'll come with the censorship module turned on. If still? Appeal that. If they still reject it?!

Either permanent censorship enabled, Cydia, or Android. It would suck if it got to this, and maybe we just might egg a certain house in Cupertino. I would not even want to possibly release it then.

Don't worry though. There are a lot of apps out there with worse content out there (Uncle Mitch won't have his man boobs jiggle when you shake the phone and we're not inserting single frames of pornography while browsing), and there are appeal processes. The app has at least 80% harmless fun that I can promise shouldn't be a problem (can't reveal exact specifics). It really depends on the person we get reviewing and a lot of randomness. If the film C.H.U.D. happens to inspire a kid to kill a bunch of people we might have a harder time.

We got some unique things in this app that will set it apart, and so far I haven't broken any rules that I know of. I've coded 1st, ran, debug, and then skim the guidelines. Nothing has been removed in terms of violating those rules, just because of time and wanting to have things for other releases.

The final set of features has been set in stone for a while. Even the Uncle Mitch drinking game wasn't put in due to it being rejected due to the adult nature of it (there are tons of drinking game apps), just due to timing and balance. The censorship module was just added to ensure further chances of approval on the 1st shot. I wish I didn't have to put it in there, but I rather have the app for everyone on the 1st shot and hopefully not have it enabled on the get go.

I think we're seeing the light at the end of the sewer, so I just wanted people to know what's going on, and what could possibly happen as we near release. The puzzle is almost done, soon some key people will play with it, and then we'll package it up for you guys.

Till then, don't worry about things till we actually have something to worry about. So far, everything is going as planned.

FYI: I don't care about a censorship mode if it's something I can toggle off once and be done with. It's inclusion wouldn't bother me at all, if anything, it would make the APP appear more fully featured

All the same, I appreciate your sage insights into this approval process, and your words of assurance. I wish you luck in the home stretch!

See, this is a complaint I don't get. I grew up with Apple computers. The first "video games" I ever played were on a mac classic my family purchased for like 5000$. The world of the mac has always been a closed, insular one. You operate within the sphere of tech and applications designed to work on a mac. Things work as well as they do because every step of development is micromanaged and controlled to an exacting degree. The fervor for iProducts confirms that the public at large finds the devices and technologies that result from this process to be desirable investments

And really, whats to complain about?

If anything, Apple is now more open than it's ever been at any point in the companies history. I had a grudge when iPods were first sold that were designed to operate on the PC. However, ultimately Job's vision proved true and Apple today stands poised to redefine the world of computing and render every accomplishment Microsoft ever (actually) put to it's name forgotten and trivial

If you don't like the control Jobs exerts over his company and it's products, do not buy them. Buy from Apple's competitors. If they are able to emulate the features and functions you enjoy and expect from Apple products that is

For those of us who trust in Steve, we feel that ultimately a little bit of censorship is more than palatable if it leads to the digital nirvana that is the iPod Touch and other alchemical Apple wonders. If nothing else, Jobs has raised the bar for the industry and people who want their flash playing cell phones still get to benefit from the competitions race to catch up

Oh kids, stop whining. Here's the most revealing present of all:
old pic - http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/1033/img0168.png

So submit that dumb stuff to Nick where ever you are.
Side note: You can't e-mail videos. Upload them to youTube if you want. Saves us time then e-mail us the link. Bandwidth isn't cheap.

Sider note: Yes iPod touch users, that menu adjusts just for you. Although with a new camera on the new ones, you'll get the iPhone options. Not saying you should go buy the new one.

Private beta testing will begin sometime later this week. Public beta, don't know yet. Things are going so good (ahead of schedule), we might skip that and jump right to getting it ready for release, which now we might submit the thing to Apple the second the new site is ready. So maybe 2 weeks after that?!

Oh I've been testing it so far, if you see an Indian guy with a lot of tentacles on his iPhone 4 walking around Atlanta... ...it could be me, playing with the GPS parts. Soon Nick and co will be doing the same, but I'll tell them turbans are optional. Now where the hell is that microphone...
Just from a user interface standpoint, I don't get why you'd have a 'No' and a 'Cancel' button for attaching a file. Either a) you pressed the 'Attach' button and you changed your mind or b) it's automatically asking you to attach a file. Auto-asking is probably not ideal since the percentage of use cases where you do want to attach a file is much lower than the cases where you don't.
Thread Starter
Yeah I should rename that top part.

If you hit NO, you just get to write the email without the file.

Cancel is for if you click the Contact button and change your mind.

I'm gonna change it asap.
Well, to make it as intuitive as possible you should just bring up the email interface and then have an 'attach' button. Basically like how the integrated Mail app works. You generally want to remain consistent with the existing UI so that users aren't trying to figure out something new.

Every place that something is different is a place a user can get confused. So unless there's a very good reason for doing it different you generally want to avoid those kind of changes.
Thread Starter
Well I adjusted the options, yeah we are hiding the interface as much as possible right now because we're playing between unique and intuitive. That's what we're playing with, moving buttons, adjusting animations. Sadly Apple rejects an app if it mimics one exactly, so we have to keep things unique to some extent.

With the contact option, you don't leave the app at all.

The UI is somewhere between Coverflow, Windows Phone 7, CNN, Engadget, and the new site. Things move but things are constant. What I'm going for is once you play around, you should be able to move around without looking (like the Back button is always bottom left). I did toy around with sticking to the iPhone interface and navigation elements, but now we have a greater degree of control with the images the way they are. I promise in the end you'll understand (can't spoil everything), but if everyone hates it, 2.0 will be the Chewers whims.

Actually though, there is a lot of planned randomness in the app, but not the navigation. All I can say, imagine holding a baby creature, that's what we're going for.
In usability, unique is only useful if it adds something. I could even question your calling of the attach dialog first. Since when you send a message to a contact, the first thing you do is rarely attach a file.

I'd think if you are using this for something like Dumb a Day/List of the Dumb that you'd want a specific button/interface for that and then other email type stuff just send the user to the standard email client.

Without the flow of the whole app though, it's hard to make any judgement on this.
Possible dumb question: How much extra work is involved in creating the CHUD android app? Would it be easy once the iphone app is complete? I realise it's a lower priority because it would be less revenue.
Thread Starter
Well the real reason I can't answer the CHUD Android at the moment is due to my availability (I'll be able to keep up with any bugs). The background stuff will be there. Maybe you just might need a browser.

Contact wise, yes we do call the iPhone's native composer. So you can paste in any attachments if you want.

Besides, when you use the iPhone/iTouch, you compose your message, then add your attachment, either by jumping into the Photo app, or already having it copied. You do have that option here as well. We got fast switching enabled.

Still I do appreciate all the comments, we still got quite a bit of time, and adjustments can be made.

Hmm what to say, I know its been a while.

I should say the app is at 80%, and I'll try to take it to 100% this year. A lot of stars are aligning.

Oh and iPhone 4 and iPad people? Might want to have a video out cable for something . Not required of course, but it might make killing easier or more fun.

Oh and the simplicity of the app will probably allow you to snark at a basic level.

Soooo new CHUD... ...new app?

I want it to be known that my life got suddenly very busy with school (12 hr shifts, med school, exams) and a small perfect storm hit of various factors that will end up delaying the app slightly. I of course take full responsibility  for the tardiness and should of planned for this happening.

That said, the project isn't dead at all. It will come. It also bears a few extra fruit in that it allows the new site to get fully going smoothly before my part is injected to it. It also allows for a greater deal of polish (which Apple is very high on) and delivering you the best app we can. The app is in a functioning state, and a few things have to be tested because we have things on there that no one has really attempted before and a lot is going under the hood (and in the skies?!).

There is a mobile version of the site, but we wouldn't bring the app unless there was a specific reason to, and its still there, and soon the app will be too.

PS: Clue: You'll be able to watch aliens on your TV.

Honestly, I might of teased a little too early, and events in life took interesting turns (med school).

That said, man have we had a LOT of time to get it right. Hope I don't pull a Lost or Smallville finale.

Expect an announcement by the end of this month related to the status of the app.

There are a couple of phases to release. They can loop back on each other if huge bugs or violations are there.

Coding - kind of a long one

Personal Testing - usually done with the above

Small Group Testing - coding is stable enough to send out for testing to multiple people. Minor recoding to setup development things.

Submission to Apple - a few weeks, but hopefully shorter

2/4 of those are done.

Big day everyone!

CHEWER TESTING!!

Please contact Nick Nunziata for details on getting in on this exclusive group! We're going to pick 5-10 awesome people.

Yes it's finally happening! The video shows a few glimpses of the app.

Description (subject to change):

Now CHUD is in your pocket (unless you put this on your iPad, then you need a big pocket). Needless to say, what do you get in this:

*Access to recent articles of all topics from the site! With an incredible full screen landscape view!
*Access to recent forum posts & comments from... ...the site! You do need to hit up CHUD.COM to create a free account if you don't have one, but you should! Then you can post  new threads and reply in a mobile friendly format!  Rotation support for you big finger people. Also we threw in full screen landscape view for you nice peoples in the individual threads.
*Chewer Cam: Take pictures if you got a camera. Even if you don't, use that library of yours. Amazing filters such as Posing with Uncle Mitch, Be Uncle Mitch and MORE! Upload to little site known as facebook to share with people.
*Tracker: Check out the cool tagged locations the crew of CHUD.COM want to send you. Parking extra.
*Podcasts: Access the audio podcasts from Nick Nunziata and crew. Guaranteed to offend children and nuns. Full 4.0 backgrounding support and remote control (via that fancy double tap). Got an AppleTV? Airplay! Pandora has nothing on us.
*Games: Chewer Runner and one that is hidden! Try to find it! Brag about it later. Then cry when you realize we made them Mega Man 2 hard. Post your high scores to Facebook and make your friends jealous of your score!
*Tutorial Mode: Let Uncle Mitch guide you in the ways of using the app, just remember, he is an uncle...
*Some other misc stuff: iOS 4 Retina Support, Fast Twitching err Switching, audio backgrounding, aliens and saving your favorite articles for later viewing.
*Self esteem boost: Cause you can use this app and show it off to people. Also, clicking ads has been known to do so as well.
*AND MORE!

So I need to be honest about the status of this thing:

delayed

Why?

Well with the status of this site, and various" hurdles" that pop up, might as well not rush this. Apple had issues with the app as it was in its current state, and it has to have changes. Now to get those done...

I am glad that you guys are taking the time to get it right. It just means that it will be even better when we finally get it, it will have had the time to go through the revisions needed to get it in line with APPLE's APP STORE guidelines, and be set to deliver the best CHUD APP experience possible

Well, I did a blind search for it this morning...and it was there!  I gave you what I believe is your first 5 star review, so Chewers get to downloading this badboy and rating it up as fast as possible!

Hah yeah talk about irony.

So some stories:
We had some issues with Apple accepting it, but everything worked out in the end. Kudos to them for listening.

BUT

Lightning fried my hard drive and my external hd- lost all source code to the chud app 1.0

SO

We might be going straight to 2.0 as I write all the code again (from memory). So bug fixes might be delayed (AGH I even know of one!!).

iPad support yes! Search coming. Android? I really got to get the iPhone/iPad stuff straightened out, but I'll let you know. Windows Phone? Maybe even sooner (as I'm taking some courses that could delve into that).

So yeah this Christmas, my money went to 2 new hard drives, surge protector, and lots of energy drinks to squeeze in time for coding. Thank god I've stopped growing. I can hold off on pants.

On the plus side, I found the secret game!

Hah, if any bugs pop up (we got most of them, but I think there might be 2 at the moment), we'll make sure to squash them.

Oh and post them here.

Any recommendations are welcome as well.

I'm already on the job of doing the next update, which is coded from scratch (and now I learn I have to buy new memory too).
