In lieu of official portrait, Nebraska court house displays a fake Obama image

Simply put, this is despicable. It shows you the frightening autonomy that some of these backwoods places are allowed. There is no equivalent of Internal Affairs for our courts, and so stuff like this happens, or that thing where a judge with stock in a prison company sent all the kids who came before him to juvie in order to line his own pockets
post #2 of 41
Oh the howls of treason that would have erupted had this been done to Bush.
I keep hoping that after a few more election cycles, I'll become numb to what is hopefully a harmless, yet rage-fueling pattern of hypocrisy with the right/left struggle.

I love that photo. In fact I like it more than the official portrait*

*In fairness, that image is really awesome and the official portrait is far from the best image of our President. He looks grumpy in it

I loathe you.

I'm always the first to jump on assholes like this, but you know what? If a court posted a funny photo of Bush I would have laughed. Kinda disrepectful? Sure. Despicable? Come on, pick better battles.

I can talk about this without blowing my lid, the rise of facism in Arizona is still too much of a hot button for me to discuss in a calm and reasonable fashion.

That's not fascism you twit. That's an asshole in Nebraska with an unfunny joke.

Um? I was saying that the Arizona "law" is fascism, and that the Nebraska idiot is a subject I can at least discuss without my head imploding from rage.

I stand by my statement. You're a twit.

You're still a half baked twit. Arizona's new law is not fascism.

Kate, there's a kettle here that wants to talk to you about a name you called it.

Thanks, PK. I knew there was an easier way to read what was on HuffPo than finding and clicking on every single link you have ever posted in the Politics forum.

Dude, she only posts HuffPo stuff because she doesn't have high-speed internet at her mom's house, or something, and can't wait to move out to her dad's house and get high-speed internet because her sister is stuck in London. Or something.

Yes, pretty much (last I heard she was stuck in Paris but we don't speak and I don't really know where she is now. Hopefully inside the volcano) (and my mom has highspeed, not my dad)

Anyway

I just wanted to return to clarify my anger over this issue. Some people have suggested it's a harmless joke. Really? A photoshopped image designed to make a black, democratic President look sleazy was displayed in a court house in place of his official portrait. Know why we use official portraits? To deny federal and local government offices (which exist to serve all the people) the chance to editorialize with their photo choice. Above all else our courts are supposed to be apolitical. The smoking Obama image is not apolitical.

What if you were a black democrat going into that court room, how would seeing that image make you feel? Would you reasonably wonder if you'd get as fair a shake as a republican? As a white person?

Now ask yourself if it's still a totally harmless "joke"

Why do you find it sleazy? Is it the use of tobacco? The unbuttoned shirt?

I find it very "common man". And "introspective". And "not afraid to take a risk".

Why are you profiling, PK?

I'd have to disagree. For example I made this artwork on my iPod last night to illustrate my point

If Nebraska had put up that image it would be clear that it was celebrating the common man/smoking is cool aspect of our President while respecting him in his role as Commander in Chief

Instead that black and white image IS about making him look sleazy (IMHO, but I'm pretty sure I'm right)

Nice artwork. Why did you make Obama white?

Cause I couldn't find a shade of brown that worked well and didn't want to make him blue or red, and I figured making him the white in the red white and blue was a nice finger in the eye to all the tea partiers

PS Re: My Art

I would have preferred smaller stripes on the flag but it was hard to make smaller ones that looked even
post #26 of 41
At least we're past the phase when public officials were posting outright racist pictures of Obama eating watermelon with an afro.

...Right?
Turning the first black president into a white guy sure is a great way to stick a finger in the eye of all those crazy Tea Partiers. Keep up the good work, PK.

As someone who lives in Nebraska, I'll agree, this is pretty stupid. Also as someone who lives in Nebraska, I should point out to Kate that we are not backwoods at all, that our congressional district went for Obama in 08 and probably will again in 12.

We all talked shit on Bush, so if the other side decides to do the same thing in a way that isn't hurting anyone, who gives a fuck? It's a harmless photograph, so what's the point of getting upset about it?

I find it funny that with all the other shit in the world going on, THIS is the shit that gets PK riled up.

Also, is anyone else with me in thinking that Kate is legitimately a fake? There is no way that such a person exists.

To be fair I don't know much about your state. I just feel like there are parts of this country that have yet to catch up with the 1960s much less the aughts. This story seemed like another example of that but it's cool you guys went to Obama

I don't care if "the other side" insults the president, I care if our courts do. They're supposed to be on no one side or the other

As I already explained, this story gets me riled up but less so than other stories. Therefore I can discuss this constructively without freaking out with anger, which is what the Az Immigration Law makes me want to do

I have to assume you're kidding. I didn't give him pink skin, I made him the white in the red white and blue. There is a large, obvious difference.

I'm going to agree with Mezz. I remember countless, countless caricatures of Bush during his term -- this is timid compared to what it could be. My biggest complaint about this situation is that the picture is being displayed in a court house, where I would hope there would be more respect for the presidency, whether you like the guy or not.

Right, caricatures by private liberal citizens. Again, how would you feel if those were posted in court rooms that are supposed to be above politics?

Seriously, that first pic looks like he just finished a night at the Ali-Frazier fight and is heading off to watch a double bill of Thelonius Monk and Miles Davis. But, first, he has to kick the ass of that guy who bumped in to Michelle during the third round. Motherfucker was mouthy all god damn night! He gots ta pay!

I really, really, hate to throw out phrases like "coastal elites" since, for all intents and purposes I would probably be called one as well, but the idea that the midwest hasn't caught up with the 1960's is laughable. Omaha, Madison, Minneapolis - St. Paul, actually most of Iowa, and parts of Kansas and Missouri are all extraordinarily liberal. Just remember, despite the narrative that you've heard all of your life, geography plays little to no part in the advancement of certain cities, especially when they all belong to the same country.

I'm sure people could say the same shit about the south, where I happened to grow up, but they'd be forgetting that certain parts of the south are fucking awesome (I'm looking at you, Savannah). Also, there are parts of our geographical lexicon which don't really fit into any neat stereotypes. For example, the Civil Rights battles were fought in the south, so most people assume that, say, Alabama or Louisiana, are way more racist than somewhere like the southwest, nevermind the fact that Arizona is probably the single most fucked up state that I have ever been to.

Just, you know, chill the fuck out.

I totally agree, but just because some asshole judge hangs some shit in his courtroom, that's not really a cause to get all gung-ho about, you know? The system works, someone asked that the portrait be replaced and it was. I don't see the huge deal here.

And yeah, I read your remarks about how a black person might feel like they can't get a fair trial in that environment, and I think you actually had some good points there, but, and since you don't know anything about Nebraska you wouldn't know this, there are LITERALLY like two black people in that town.

This whole thing is the definition of not a big deal.

But did it really need it's own thread? Can you imagine if there was a thread for every time there was an anti-bush protest, or some judge in NY or Mass or wherever said something negative about Bush? The board's cup would runneth over. Some people disagree with us, and we just have got to learn that, accept it, get the fuck over it, and THEN we can gloat when civilization doesn't collapse on our fucking heads.

When you consider that we're living in such a hate fueled climate that prompts former elected officials into thinking it's okay to broadcast that he wants to shoot the president with a fucking shotgun, and a FB page that's inciting an alarming number of people to pray for his death (I think they've amassed close to 1M at this point) this incident seems rather laughable in comparison.

Well, I always took being an 'elite' to be a good thing, but I take your point. Nebraska may well have caught up with the aughts. I've never been to most of the racist places in America so I can't be certain where they end and the land of sane people begins. I am sorry if my geographic generalizations offended you

In and of itself, it's not as big a deal as the Arizona thing. You're right. But the fact that a judge would chose to do that just struck me as indicitave of a particularly virulant brand of nastiness that has infected much of the country lately. Sorry if my choice to spotlight this particualr incident was not one you agreed with

What about people driving through who might have to deal with local police and courts? What about plain old white democrats in Nebraska?

In my mind the fact that it happened in a court is what made it news worthy. I don't post links for every inarticulate slur to spew forth from the toothless mouth of a tea bagger. This one seemed like a bigger deal since it involved the courts. Anyway, I'll try to avoid posting "rudeness exhibited towards the President" threads for a while, just for good measure

Devin, you are right that the new law in AZ doesn't meet the strictest definitons of fasicsm and in fact falls under the catagory of totalitarianism

However, the bill was written by a neo nazi friendly state rep who has a history of holocaust denial and is friendly with organizations that promote the "science" of eugenics.

Plus I don't think anyone would argue that the modern republican party seeks to organize our nation around corporatiest principals and virtues, would they?

So while I may have been using the word in a less than accurate fashion, I hope you can understand why I used it in the context I did
