Arcade Fire - Album #3

I've been checking for news everyday, ANY news, to keep my anticipation and excitement from breaking loose. After the anthemic, earnest feel of Neon Bible, I'm really curious to find out where this band will take me next. I think (hope) they have just begun showcasing their very best work.

Spike Jonze and the band are filming, or have already filmed, a short film in Austin. I'm guessing for the first single from the new album. Supposedly about "teenage friends growing apart." Sounds so, I dunno, Arcade Firey. Found the casting call for the short film on a blog.

Never seen them live, so that's one of my must-do things in life right now.

I love these guys. Glad to hear they're hard at work.

Yeah, I really can't recommend that experience enough. They were equally amazing in a small club and a big theater.
I saw them at Obama's Inaugural Staff Ball (co-headlining with Jay-Z). I was always pretty lukewarm on Neon Bible, but those songs were amazing live. It's a must-see show.
Arcade is one of the best live act there is. They're so good I nearly wanna go to the Osheaga festival, along The National*.

*Hint: I hate exterior shows with a passion.

New single out soon! Supposedly titled 'Suburbs/Month of May'. From their official site:

Sure hope this leads to me actually getting to see them live finally!
These guys are two for two as far as I'm concerned so I'm 'stoked'.

When is this coming out? the anticipation is killing me!!!

Hear 30-second clips of 'The Suburbs' and 'Month of May'!!!

Such a cock-tease. 'Month of May' sounds kinda punky!

RUMOR #1: New album will be released at the end of July.

RUMOR #2: They recorded and mixed some 38 songs for the new album.
The clips are short but those are vastly from what I expected. Awesome.
Ugh, that is frustrating. I can't wait for more. With these teases, the single has to be up in less than a week, right? Right????

Also, end of July would be amazing. Quite a nice surprise.

Month of May and The Suburbs.

In their entirety.

Holy shit.

ETA: General concencus seems to be that The Suburbs is awesome and Month of May is not. I love them both, although they're very, very different. Anticipation for their third record shot up 100% and I didn't think that was possible.

The consensus is so very wrong. "Month of May" has very quickly become one of my favourite songs by them. So very, very good.

When I hear new Arcade Fire material, it always takes me some time to adjust (Neon Bible didn't wow me right away, but now it's probably a top 10 Desert Island Disc). I think they'll both sound even better when superior quality rips come out. There's nuance and detail buried all over 'The Suburbs'.

'Month of May' is a tidy 'lil rocker. Just what I needed.

The rumor that the album's gonna be a triple-disc (38 songs) is still going around. Can you imagine if it's true? I'd have the biggest musical equivalent of an orgasm ever. Then again, I'm always up for quality over quantity. Very few bands could pull off a triple-disc with success (let alone a double album!), so it'll be interesting if it's true.
To be fair Vince Gill made a four disc set called These Days that was fantastic so its possible for a great three disc set.

I hope this isn't true. It's such a rookie mistake to release a double-album let alone a triple.

I know Joanna Newsom released a triple album earlier this year to rave reviews, but I haven't listened to it (not the biggest Newsom fan).

It's good, but a bit overstuffed. An edit couldn't have hurt.

Still, I hope the rumors for Arcade Fire are true. Too much is not enough.
I love both of these songs. I would say The Suburbs pips it for me though, just love it, sounds like the beginning of some kind of mystery story to me. Always found Arcade Fire's music to really spark my visual imagination for some reason. Wrote a whole story based on my feelings after hearing Funeral for the first time.

Anyway when is the album coming out?? And more importantly does anyone know when they are doing shows in the UK? I know they are playing Reading/Leeds but I need to see them again.

November 18th 2007 at Alexandra Palace was the best concert I have ever been to and one of the best nights of my life.

Month of May is quite reminiscent of a faster, punkier version of the Pixies' Cactus. I like it though. I'm not convinced The Suburbs is anything special to be honest. I'm a big fan of bands doing sprawling, over-ambitious double albums (once, not every time) so I quite hope the triple-album rumours are true.

It's not a triple-disc. Read above.

Anyone that's pre-ordering from their site---a little warning. Shipping and handling is $10.70.

I think it (Have One On Me) is the best album of the year, so far. We will re-assess that statement, however, on August 4th.

Canadian Indie dude Joel Plaskett released the awesome "3" last year.

I feel like Sufjan Stevens is going to release a sextuple-album one of these years. He's got so many states left...

Love these songs already and can't wait to hear how they fold into the album.

Is that at least with a "receive on or before release date" guarantee?

I didn't see any guarantee, but I may have missed it. I know I'll be getting the digital release on or before the date for sure, so I can hold out a few more days. If this doesn't leak before the release date, I'll be shocked.

I got digital downloads of the two new songs after I pre-ordered, and they do indeed sound so much better than the crappy radio rips that were out there yesterday.

NPR interview with Win and Will Butler.

More Regine songs this time out. Win calls a couple of them "amazing"!

He'd kind of be in trouble if he didn't say that though! I dig Regine songs so I'm excited.

Regine's songs tend to grow on me over time. Haiti is now one of my favorite songs on Funeral (though it might be because it's one of the few I haven't overplayed).

Haiti is one of my top five Arcade Fire songs. I love it. I've always loved it. I don't know why, but there's something about the rhythm and build of it that really rings true to me. I also love In the Back Seat too. Classic closing track. So more Regine songs sounds good to me.

I think ABC just found their new theme music for the Indy 500 next year.

Ditto.

'Haiti' and 'The Well and the Lighthouse' are currently duking it out for fave Arcade Fire song.

And tonight there were tickets to the Atlanta show available and there was much rejoicing.

Got tickets for August! So excited to see them again.

Gotta agree with the love for Regine songs. I adore In The Backseat, such a perfect capper to that album, but I think my favourite has to be Black Wave/Bad Vibration. I just love how the tonality changes when Regine stops singing and Win takes over, love how this really fun airy piece just becomes utterly menacing and I think it nicely sets up the dynamic of Neon Bible as a whole. I always though it would have been a perfect intro song for the album, but I kind of understand why they went with Black Mirror instead.

If you haven't already it's worth checking out the EP 'Us Kids Know', it's nowhere near as good as Funeral or Neon Bible but stuff like Swimming In A Submarine and Headlights Look Like Diamonds are great pop songs.

As good as Neon Bible is, I always thought it was weird that Regine only has the vocal spotlight on half of a song. I don't think it would have felt overstuffed if they'd added a Regine-fronted song (although maybe they just didn't have one at the time).

As for the two new ones... hm. They're not really grabbing me, which is weird. I might just need to hear them in context.

Month of May doesn't wow me at all, I've never been this lukewarm toward an Arcade Fire song.

The Suburbs I love.

Especially considering that album featured a redone version of a previous song (not that I'm complaining, since I love that version). They probably just didn't have one ready, or one that fit, or whatever.

They're definitely not as epic or sweeping as Intervention, for example, but I still think they're good. I'm glad they're scaling back just a wee bit. The bombastic thing can only go so far. I'm guessing (hoping) that the songs will work better in the context of the album. I actually thought the same thing about the Neon Bible singles that were released before the album came out.

Yeah, I kinda dig that, at least for the two songs released, it doesn't sound like 20 people are performing. I really like the title track, although I think I'm pre-imagining it inside a great album.

They are playing MSG? I had no idea they were big enough to be playing arenas, but, then again, I don't really know what is and what isn't popular these days.

I'm pretty sure that's Regine singing background vocals on 'Month of May'.

Lovin' the two new songs after more listens. I'm waking up every morning with 'Month of May' stuck in my head. Win referred to both tunes as the two extremes of the album during the NPR interview. He even mentioned some electronica influences popping up on the new disc. If I was a gamblin' man I'd wager that this album's gonna be an eclectic ride.
