Dial M for Murder

Just watched Dial M for Murder for the first time

After it played the DVD flicked to the special features menu which had a short doco on it's use of 3D which made me go that was a 3D movie (I realize this was probably news to nobody but me), watching it the only thing that struck me as odd was a shot that panned around a lamp, which I had initially thought was setting up the lamp as an important plot point for later. Obviously in hindsight the Iconic Grace Kelly's hand shot would have been a big 3D moment. Still I would not have guessed.

It was a weird movie because in many ways it shouldn't have worked, it's basically 110 minutes of exposition and plot mechanics contained in a room and a corridor, I know it's an adaption of a play, but there wouldn't have been too much stopping them if they had wanted to add a police station or court room scene, but because of the performances and tension (and it's a really weird kind of tension due mostly to the oddball sort of proto-Colombo detective) it does all work really well.

Reminded me a lot of Deathtrap (1982) which is another movie I really love.

Yeah, it's a movie that I'm not sure would have worked if done today since it's such a small scale movie. Someone would've been bound to change and add to it. Look at The Box. It took a simple story and just kept expanding it until it went into la la land.

It's great though. Grace Kelly is so magnetic in it.
