Gordon, Paoli and Yuzna: The real story?

Stuart Gordon wrote and directed, Dennis Paoli wrote and Brian Yuzna produced Re-animator. Since then Gordon and Paoli have not been involved in the Re-animator series at all.

They still collaborate with Yuzna fairly regularly, but have had no involvement in making the Re-animator sequels.

I read an interview where Gordon was asked why he didn't get involed with Bride and his answer was that he was working on a different film at the time and didn't feel a Re-animator film should be rated R. Was there a difference of opinion on how the sequels should be handled perhaps?

Is there more to the story of why Gordon and Paoli (who did fab work on From Beyond and Dagon) are not involved with this series? Is it wholly owned by Yuzna and he has decided he and only he will handle it?

I asked Gordon about this in person last year and he basically told me the same thing:[*]<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Yuzna is in charge and controls the rights.[*]<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Stuart has no desire to do an R rated Re-Animator film. (Which he would've been obligated to deliver had he agreed to direct Bride.)[*]<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">The only sequel he's interested in doing is his House of Re-Animator concept, which Yuzna has problems with (which Yuzna explained in my interview with him a few months back as being too much of political satire and not a horror film).

I'm sure there's more to it, but as you said, they continue to work together and the comments have been consistent over the years.

...And I asked Paoli about some time ago at a preview screening for DAGON; he said that while he obviously loves adapting Lovecraft stories and enjoys working with Yuzna and Gordon, he didn't want to be involved in any sequel of any kind. He's simply not interested in that kind of work.

Thanks a bunch Inspector and Alice!

I suppose I got the answers I expected, but I had been wondering about this for awhile.

Does Gordon have a little more ownership of his newer films then his 80's work? I noticed that he rarely is listed as a producer on his own films.
