How to connect PC to TV?

H'okay. I have a Dell laptop and a 2003 Mitsubishi TV. When I connect them via an S-Video cable, my wallpaper shows up on the bigscreen, but nothing else.

How do I get the TV to show my desktop, Windows, etc. so that I can watch video content on the TV?

The TV does not have a USB port, but I have a new Pioneer DVD player - can the PC connect to that and then feed to the TV?

Thank you, oh wise ones!

Does the TV have a RGB(VGA) monitor and stereo(headphone jack) input? If so, here ya go. I got mine for about $25 locally if you cannot find anything cheaper, let me know.

I'm assuming 2003 TV and your laptop have not HDMI input/outputs, yes?

Are you running XP or Vista/7?

For XP:
Right click the desktop and choose 'Properties'

Once the 'Display Properties' dialog comes up, select the far right 'Settings' tab

You should see two boxes, one representing your computer monitor and one your TV (the one that represents your TV should be smaller and have a big 2 in it, you can click the Identify Monitors).

Anyway, click on the one that is your TV and make sure that 'Extend the desktop onto this monitor' is checked.

You should now be able to move/drag things from your computer monitor onto your TV (it's an extension of your desktop). Typically if you drag screens there and then do whatever their "full screen" command is (alt-enter for Windows Media Player I think) to watch them.

For Vista:
It's about the same only to get to the menu simply right click the desktop and choose 'Personalize'. Scroll down to the bottom of the Personalization window and you'll see 'Display Settings'. Click it.

Repeat the rest of the steps above.

ETA:
As said above, S-Video will max out at 640x480 so RGB (monitor cable) will possibly get you a better resolution. Depending on your TV model (probably a rear projection if it's a Mitsubishi and given the year it's also probably got an RGB input on the back. Don't know what the max resolution is though).

No, unfortunately my TV does not have an HDMI connection. My DVD player does though. The TV is S-Video - I *think* an RGB might work, but I'm not sure about the audio.

Thanks for the link.

No problem. That is how I have my laptop hooked to the TV in my bedroom. The cables can be found locally at any wire supply store and for much cheaper.

What's the model number on your Mitsubishi TV? We could probably give you better instructions/links if you have that.
