Another gem from the 70s. And it's very much a "70s picture". While it's not an undiscovered masterpiece, it's almost a great film, wherein Dustin Hoffman delivers one of his greatest performances. The movie seems a bit too familiar at times, yet it still presents three-dimensional characters, who are more believable than most in "criminals on the run" movies (I dunno, if you see this movie, you'll notice several overly-familiar aspects to the story). Hoffman's protagonist has a surprising character arch, in that as the film progresses, he becomes less and less sympathetic, but always fascinating to watch - especially as the attitudes he encounters seem somewhat justified, though the movie doesn't moralize about this criminal one way or the other.
