I saw the trailer for this on the Thirst DVD, of all places, and decided to rent it. It's a wonderful movie. Outside of Once, it's the only live action musical worth a damn in recent years and the only American live action musical worth a damn in recent years.
Amy Adams is very, very good. She gives a subtle performance in a role that would have been really easy to take over the top and just owns the musical numbers. It would be nice to see her in more films like this.
Alec Newman, I've never encountered before, but I think he does very well as the male lead and holds his own with Adams in the singing department.
The atmosphere of the film is also nice. There is no question that it takes place in the present day, but setting the musical aspect of the film largely in a retro jazz club allows them to get away with giving it a 20s feel without cheating too much.
