CGI OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

New Apes film will have no man in suit action.

John Chambers wept. The CotT remake is just the latest example - CGI can't always replace the heart and soul of practical effects.

I saw this coming, but its still kind of lame. Rick Baker needs work!

I dunno, that WETA makes one helluva CGApe.

The only good thing about Burtons film was the ape effects/costumes/makeup. Which were spectacular. But WETA has certainly proven themselves and deserves the benefit of the doubt.

I honestly expected the last remake to go this route (before production started and Baker did the best Ape work in the worst Ape movie). Trained apes with cgi mouths. I wanted the actual planet of apes to be weird as fuck like the book, where crosswalks were seven feet off the ground and the apes swung from them. From what I know of this story, though, real apes are probably the way to go. Hope those fuckers sounds all Shakespearean once they start talking, though.

The ape effects in Jackson's King Kong were one of the only two good things about that movie.

Aye, or apes with a fine British accent. I'd pay for that even if the movie was crap.

Do you think Ray Harryhausen had similar reactions from genre fans back in the day.

"Why do it Stop Motion. Just put giant wings on a real horse!"
"I hope Sinbad gets to fight a real tiger instead of those unrealistic puppets!"

Nostalgia is fine and dandy, but I have not one stone to throw at someone wanting to use the latest technology to bring the fantastic to film.

I'm all about the practical FX usually. I think that the Rick Baker stuff in POTA remake is top-notch and the more realistic gorilla he created for the MIGHTY JOE YOUNG remake is also praise-worthy. This seems... unnecessary. I'd only go with the latest CG tech if A] it can't be done practical (which I think it can) or B] looks just as good as practical (which it almost never does).

With that said, Weta has earned the goodwill from me.

Wait, is this a remake of the original Planet of the Apes, or that Ceasar flick we've been hearing about for the past year?

Are the monkeys human sized, or are we gonna have talking chimps? If we have human sized apes, then go practical, but if they're just regular talking moneys (lol), then CGI enhanced lip sync on real friggin chimps.

And is that picture from Madagascar? I knew that flick had some redeeming value... I should netflix it.

If only this information was hidden in the linked article somewhere.

I want that image from the article on a thing that I own.

The thing about practical effects (for me at least) is that on some level I'm appreciating the technical feat of "how'd they do that" as the movie rolls. It adds to the experience if a movie is using real stunt men and real cars and real men-in-suits. Even as a kid, I was maybe 8 or 9 when I saw Flash Gordon - I didn't think it was a documentary, you could tell all the effects were fake but you can enjoy Flash flying blind on his rocket sled while also wondering where the wires or or if how they did those trippy backgrounds.

The answer with CGI is too simple/too complicated to really engage on that level (unless you are a programmer, I guess).

It isn't about being "photoreal." I read some article long ago, it pointed out that whether you are watching a guy in a suit or a photoreal computer graphic, the goal isn't to make the audience actually believe some guy turned into a werewolf ; it's about willing suspension of disbelief and you don't need to be photoreal for that.

No need to be an ass friendo, since It's nowhere mentioned in the main story. Instead of writing that you could have just mentioned that it was indeed Ceasar.

Ehm... How about you chill a bit. :P

I bet you anything the title will go from "Rise Of The Apes" to "Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes" (or something else that incorporates the original title). They'll want nostalgia-motivated ticket buyers to know exactly what this is.

Meh. This doesn't really bother me. While I love practical make-up FX, they might as well try something new for this one. Not enough advancements have been made since the Burton film for the make up to be much different.

I dunno... Just because WETA got hired doesn't necessarily mean the apes will be CG since they also do some great practical prosthetics work.
