Complex Magazine's Top 50 Comic Book Costumes

Saw this and thought it might be a worthwhile conversation-starter. Completely agree with their no. 1 pick. Anyone got any thoughts on the best -and, for that matter, worst- duds in comic history?

Pretty sweet that I predicted #1 before seeing it.

For worst, I'd vote Electric Boogaloo Superman.

Hawkman's costume always seemed dumb to me. When you've got actual wings on your back, decorative wings protruding from your head is just overkill. And put some spandex on up top for Christ's sakes!

I remember not liking Storm's 80s punk makeover back in the day, but I've retrospectively grown to really like it. That mohawk really accentuated Ororoe's majestic cheekbones.

The list started to lose me when it ranked Lobo above Charlie Brown, then lost me when it included McFarlane's Spidey. Also, no Superman? Or did I miss him???

My vote for worst:

Yeah, that DD costume definitely invites the blind jokes. As for the absence of Supes' outfit, maybe it was the plunging neckline that did it in.

Bleh, Spawn as number 3? It's such a busy and ugly costume, and it kind of rips off the Prowler.

Yeah, the top 3 placing for Spawn's costume -a hotchpotch of The Prowler, Spidey and Deadpool's garb, with a bunch of chains and skulls thrown in as accessories- is laughable.
Clearly the fine folks at Complex have never read an issue of 2000AD. Or an indie comic book.

Oh and Tomb of Dracula should be top five surely
post #9 of 34
The lack of the Silver Age Flash costume annoys me.
It's like they just found 50 comcis-related pictures on Google Images and then threw them in a random order.

I mean, come on, Cassidey from PREACHER? Lobo? Spawn at #3? And Spider-Man in the bottom ten? I really don't want to be that guy who sits here and argues who has the best costume, but there was clearly little to no thought put into this at all. Why the hell even bother?
....complex magazine - wow, way to have horrendous "bro" style writing.

do love me some black suit spidey though.
this list is horrible. truly truly horrible. John Constantine? Constantine is better than Superman, really? Batman? Its a brown fucking trenchcoat over a shirt and tie and matching pants FFS!

More importantly they didn't specify which versions of these characters they were talking about for the most part. Just saying Doctor Doom isn't saying a damn thing. Which artist, what era?

There are some truly horrific choices in there also. Angels Champions costume is way better than X-Factors Arch Angel. I think whoever put this list together might actually be colorblind.

They do list the artist and year in the top left of each choice, but on one or two occasions it didn't seem to match. Might be wrong, though.

Still a horrible list and massively unfunny humor.
Liefield being listed as an artist just lost it for me. No matter my love for Deadpool. So Superman is not on this list?! Screw that.
Foggy Nelson. In the top 25.
What a horrible list. So many piss poor choices.

Wait, what? I was getting bored and skipped to the end, I figured I just missed him!

Bill Everett put a lot of thought into him.

Complex sucks donkey dick for listing Spawn above Superman in anything. I don't care if it is a list of shit crapped out of 1992. Superman still wins.

If it was who was the coolest zombie black dude, Superman still wins.

Spawn is about as relevant as the Macarena.

Am I correct in thinking that all of these costumes, with a few exceptions, look equally horrible? Or is that my distaste for superheroes talking?

No, I think you're pretty much right, most superhero costumes are designs only a 12 year old could love. There are a few iconic exceptions that work well(Superman, Spider-Man, Batman etc.), all of which are apparently lesser than Lex Luthor's Mega Suit.
That Mega Suit was pretty cool.
I'm noticing that nearly all the entries in the top 40 are heroes with militaristic costumes featuring an almost redundant amount of pouches, female heroes in sexualized costumes, and villains wearing Rob Liefeld-like renditions of power suits. I'm sort of tempted to take bets on whether or not Rob Liefeld was the guy who assembled the list.
Liefeld is too busy trying to milk Deadpool than to come up with lists.
They didn't even pick very good illustrations of the costumes they chose.
For my money there's a laundry list of reasons why Batman has the best superhero costume of them all and he's not even in the top ten here, but whatever, totally stupid list, these things usually are.

Also this...DEATHLOK (19) "Part intelligent black man (a soldier/genius military strategist or a pacifist professor/scientist, depending on the version), part enhanced machine wrapped in a badass metal-mesh bodysuit, Deathlok is so intimidating that white folks don't just cross the street when they see him coming, they cross the damn country. And go to a Tea Party!"
what's with having dude's in casual clothes as "costumes" John Constantine and Cassidy? Foggy Nelson?

And where are all the super-heroines? Cos Powergirl needed to be top 10. or Emma frost - yeah they are a bit revealing but they are damn fine costumes, way better than some irish vampire in jeans.
Yeah, retarded having people's clothes considered a costume.

Also "Batman's Kryptonian alter-ego, Nightwing". *pushes up imaginary nerd glasses* That's not right. It's Superman's Kryptonian alter-ego based on Batman (later retcon-ed to be a hero from Krypton's past).

Case in point, choosing McFarlane's big-eyed-way-too-cut Spider-Man over Romita's.

And Batman circa the Arkham Asylum game is definitely the best superhero costume ever, minus the overbulk.
Well, I think there's something to be said about Constantine and Rorschach's looks being so iconic, rather than good costumes. I'd add Spawn to the list for that. As for good design.......Eh. Hrm. I"ll get back to you on that.

It took me a while to figure this out. And that right there is why Apple will never seriously consider naming rights for a sports venue.
Batman behind both Nightwing AND Moon Knight? Clearly, these folks are just funnin' with us.
Even I'm ahead of Moon Knight in the costume department, and I'm not even a superhero, or wearing clothes at the moment.
If they'd waited a bit longer to compile their list, I'm sure Alex Ross' new Phantom redesign would have topped it.
Cable should have been no. 1. This list is invalid.
