NPR is being awesome and streaming the whole album, to tide you over until it's released properly on the 18th.


This band is one I've been head over heels for for a little over three years now, and I think they're one of the greatest gifts to blues/rock in the last ten years. Everything about these two guys is just fucking awesome. The fact that this is their eighth album (Ninth if you count Blackroc) and it's still kicking ass without becoming repetitive or watered down speaks volumes for their creative wealth on display.

That, and their last two music videos have been about a mischievous, dancing funkasarus rex puppet. You can keep your Lady Gaga Telephone bullshit, that's where the real genius is at.

Next Girl is incredibly infectious. I think I've youtubed it about 5 times in the last day on three different computers.

Kind of on the fence about it-- the songwriting is still strong, but I don't know that expanding the band is really enhancing things, and when these guys start to remind me of bands like Dengue Fever ("The Only One"), it just feels as though they're groping for direction. And harpsichords.

Production questions aside, though, there's some great songs: "Sinister Kid" is currently stuck in my brain.

I've always been kind of indifferent about these guys. I've liked them but nothing crazy. I love this album. Its eclectic, melodic, and best of all bluesy. I hope they continue going in this direction. And yes harpsichords are great.

With all the great music this year let alone this month (with the outstanding High Violet leading the pack) I feel this album will become under appreciated.

So this is the first Black Keys album I've ever picked up after spending years hearing how great they are. What else would you guys consider essential in their back catalog?

Damn near everything, especially if you want to see how they progressed as a band. I wasn't too crazy about Magic Potion, but to be fair I don't think I listened to it enough to warrant ruling it not worth the purchase. So I'd say just get 'em all and plow through them. The album of Kimbrough covers is pretty solid, but if you're just looking for THEIR material, you can grab that at a later date and not really be missing out on much.
