Thank God It's Friday

The Commodores. Donna Summer. Jeff Goldblum.

This is a terrible movie, but at the same time it's strangely watchable in a time capsule kind of way. Nearly all of the intended humor falls flat, but it's all good-natured and harmless, so there's no way to really hate it. The two stand out performances for me, are the aforementioned Jeff Goldblum as a suave, ladies man who spends the entirety of the film trying to fuck some guys wife. And, "The Leather Man", who is better seen than described: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjQtSUObu3Q

My Mom probably loved this movie.

Don't forget young Debra Winger!

This was an HBO staple in my wee youth. I haven't seen it since the 70's, which is probably a good thing.

And Terri Nunn!

TCM ran this a few weeks ago and I ended up glued to my seat. My wife, who runs a few years younger, was bewildered. I kept getting peppered with questions that were all variations on "Is this what the seventies really were like?".

You're right about it's good natured quality. It feels like an earnest jab at the cynical downbeat realism of SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER. (Of course, it could also have been a cynical attempt to peddle an arguably sordid disco scene to a more general audience by camping it up. I'm kinda doubting it, though.) Which makes one of it's key plot threads, the husband easily tempted and a wife bent on revenge via the hedonistic, ever-so-slightly creepy. Goldblum gives the shitheel a weird sort of depth that would have probably been absent had they simply cast a generic 'sleazy' character actor. Although, I have to force myself to put the role in perspective and not see him with the benefit of three decades of substantial performances. Being just a short time before Kaufman's BODY SNATCHERS, I'd bet he was still a pretty unknown quantity when TGIF popped out.

Seeing it again after so (so, so...) long has reminded me of a few things. A world where people drove land yachts was just as silly as world where everyone drives siege engines. Also, for myself, women were generally more attractive at the end of the seventies; the perfect combination of natural curves, healthy figure and vivacious ebullience. Great hair, too. (Bounce! Behave! Bounce! Behave!)

Like Ratty, this is a major element of my HBO nostalgia. Though I was a bit more drawn to CAN'T STOP THE MUSIC thanks to an extreme Valerie Perrine crush.
