The Cribs

After liking a couple of their singles for some years, I finally gave them a proper go last week. The slick Ignore The Ignorant and it's exuberant predecessor Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever have been dominating my ears ever since. Very rarely do bands that straddle that "neat but ramshackle" line win me over so emphatically (since it usually sounds so contrived.) Then again, not all bands release a choice Replacements cover that doesn't embarrass the original.

Love Ignore the Ignorant. I hadn't heard that Bastards of Young Cover before. Impressive.

Me too, Billy. The more I listen to Men's Needs..., though, the more I prefer it. Ignore The Ignorant is great, but it doesn't feel like a strictly "pure" Cribs album due to Johnny Marr's obvious, profound influence on songs like "We Share The Same Skies", "Last Year's Snow", "Cheat On Me", and, of course, the title track. This coming from a guy who loves Marr's playing and style.

The 'Mats cover is pretty by-the-numbers, but it's not bad. Certainly better than Jesse Malin's godawful attempt at reimagining "Bastards of Young" as a weepy piano ballad a few years ago.

That's exactly why it impressed me so much, Dave. Too often bands and artists feel compelled to go as far as possible in the opposite direction of the original track when doing a cover (Jenny Owen Youngs' "Hot In Herre", for example.) It's refreshing to hear a group understand how a song's meant to be played and still manage to make it "their own."
