Andy Kaufman still alive?

Probably not, but I still find this interesting.

Someone has recently created a twitter account and a very bare bones website promoting an appearance by Andy Kaufman at The Comedy Store in L.A. on May 16th. May 16th is the 26th anniversary of his death.

Pretty sure Kaufman's dead, but it'll be interesting to see who's behind the site and twitter feed. Probably Bob Zmuda.

It's either the greatest prank of all time, or a fake. Why would Kauffman wait 26 years and not 25 or 30? Why not come out of hiding during the publicity that surrounded MAN ON THE MOON?

Kate, if he went into hiding to avoid publicity, why would he come out when publicity for him was at an all time high? It doesn't make sense. Again, this is either a hoax, or a tribute put together by Bob Zmuda.

Kaufman didn't die. He's actually Dane Cook and he's trying to see how much money he can make be doing shitty comedy. All will be revealed on the 16th.

Zmuda is behind this. He was on Adam Carolla's podcast a couple of weeks ago talking about how they were taking out full-page ads in newspapers all over the world containing a message to Andy pleading for him to come out of hiding.

It's hard to put myself in the mind of someone who would fake their own death. It's possible that after 26 years his reasons for going into hiding no longer seemed so important.

However, let me state this now: I think it's a hoax

Strange as this sounds Kate, I agree with you.

HOWEVER

If this part isn't a hoax and Andy Kaufman is still running around out there, then he deserves credit for pulling off perhaps the most epic hoax EVER.

No doubt about that. I am hoping it's real just because of how cool that would be.

Publicity for Kaufman is at an all time high right now? Am I missing some weird source of Kaufman publicity right now that trumps the big budget biopic about him?

Kate asked why he didn't come out when the movie was made. There was all kinds of Kaufman related publicity going on. If he went into hiding because he was tired of publicity, then he wouldn't have come out of hiding then. Makes sense, no?

I'm not saying that publicity for him now is at an all time high. I'm not sure where you read that. Did you read the thread before you posted? Or do you have Princess Kate on ignore? If you have her on ignore then I can see how you would have entirely missed the point of my post.

Cornelius said "was at an all time high", he was referring to when the big budget biopic was released.

EDIT: Or what Cornelius said!

That's the bunny. Knew that would get me in trouble some day. Carry on!

Weasel, now it looks like we're piling on, because we posted within a minute of each other.

I hadn't read Sean's post until just now, and it seems my Zmuda theory is correct. It's a shame. Kaufman was so ahead of his time, it'd be interesting to see what he would be like now. Sadly though, most people would still try to make him do "Foreign Man" and lip synch Mighty Mouse.

Didn't Andy give a specific date he'd return if he really didn't die, and didn't that date already come to pass? Then again, fudging your own prophecy sounds like something he'd do.

I like to imagine Andy's just waiting for a statute of limitations to expire.
