Thank You To the Friends of CHUD.

Thread Starter
I just wanted to take a minute to address a couple of issues and say a couple of things.

First of all, thank you to the people who keep coming back to these message boards and who post good stuff and who are a real part of the community. A double thank you to those folks who do that and who post on topic a bunch. My heart belongs to the people who talk about movies here.

Second, thank you to those who have been patient with CHUD's chronic technical difficulties. If you've been coming here for a while you know that stuff not working right is nothing new. We don't have an IT person on staff, and we try to figure these things out as we go along.

Obviously we hate the idea that there might be ads or something else attacking our visitors with viruses or malware, but we do need your help in combating it. We need DETAILED explanations of incidents, including what page you were on, what ads you were seeing and any other details you can think of. The solution to this isn't just pressing a button - we have to figure out the cause and then find the solution, and we can't figure out the cause without information. You can help by giving us that information (and only that information) in this thread.

Every now and again something needs to be said, so I'll say it again: This is a free service that is privately owned. This board has one of the loosest behavior policies of any that I have ever visited, and it would be a bummer to change that. So in order to keep these boards loose and, for the most part, unmoderated, remember a few simple rules:

- If you don't like it here, you don't have to come here. The internet offers you many options to stay in touch with the friends you have made on this board. Email, AIM, Facebook and other message boards will allow you to talk to the folks you like without having to put up with whatever it is that you don't like here.

- This is a free service that is privately owned. There used to be some text at the bottom of the message boards that simply read 'Don't fuck it.' That's pretty good advice, I think. This isn't your place, and you should approach it and the people who run it with a modicum of respect.

- Please don't post news stories on the board. We have a 'Submit Scoops' option, and you can always email the staff - devin at chud.com, nick at chud.com - to submit your stories. If you send us an email please give us some time to actually get to the story you've submitted, especially if it's the middle of the night. I will be working closely with Eileen over the next few days to eliminate posts that break this simple, easy rule.

- Trolling with not be tolerated. You don't have free speech on this board. This is a privately owned entity and the people who run it don't have to put up with nasty, crappy comments. This runs both ways - if you don't like something that's going on here, you should vote with your keyboard and quit coming to CHUD. If you're going to have a problem and vocalize it in a way that's offensive, churlish and that is obvious trolling, your account will be banned. This is not a violation of your rights.

And for the record, and to head off the soft-headed types who are sure to follow, trolling isn't disagreeing with me. People disagree with me - vehemently - all the time on this board.

Here's the bottom line: this is a movie message board. It should be a fun place to hang out. This isn't global politics. We intend to keep moderation of this board very loose, but we're not going to let people ruin our fun.

See, that's the way to adress this. Thanks.

I love y'all too. For the record.

Negative thread: traffic
Positive thread: tumbleweeds

So, basically another day on the boards.
Place is awesome- honestly no better place to discuss movies with people who are passionate about them, and I've learnt shit loads about film since I started visiting here years ago. Keep it up, guys and girls.
I pretty much try to stay out of any of the threads that sling drama around, although I will admit that sometimes they are fun to read.

That said, I've been trying to improve my presence here by commenting less in the frivolous threads and more often in threads of substance. Doesn't always work, but I do put the effort in there.

That's also one of the reasons I took up the offer to do a CHUD blog. I'm hoping to be a better contributer, at least in some fashion.
Guys, thanks for everything. I never thought I would bother with an internet message board until I found CHUD. It was and, for the most part, remains good stuff.

However,
Quote:

This rankles. I know these boards are Snark Central, but I don't think posters deserve to put up with "nasty, crappy comments" any more than Nick, Dev, Eileen, Alex, etc. deserve to. And it seems like Dev is implying that posters can either put up with such comments or hit the pike. That's piss poor. Maybe everyone 'round these parts should try to be a bit more respectful.
Nick gave this 35 minutes before declaring tumbleweeds. Fight back against that pessimism with your glorious chest mane, Nick!

It sucks that people have to be reminded of this stuff, and it sucks that they feel entitled to hear it. It's still nice that Devin took the time to do it, though. When the bad outweighs the good, (sane) people leave. Obviously there's lots of good here or else there'd be a lot less people. There's lots of message boards, there's far fewer communities.

Hey, I love the site (and the staff) and haven't had any problems with viruses or anything, but don't really have much to say beyond that, so I figured I didn't have much to contribute to this thread. At any rate, this is still my favorite place on the web to hang out, so I appreciate the hospitality.

I'm not implying that. I'm saying that. If you don't like something here, you don't need to come here. If we don't like the way you behave here, we have the power to make sure you don't come here.

Now how many people can you name who have, in the entire history of this board, been banned simply for saying nasty things to me?

EDIT: Never mind, Devin addressed it while I was typing.

That's cool and I think the world would be a better place if more people lived by this philosophy. Thanks for the clarification.

What's your point? But, honestly, I don't think BC's "sugar tits" comment prolonged his existence on these boards.

Note the word 'simply.' Doug, a 38 year old father of two, decided to follow up a post from me asking for no further off-topic posts in a thread with an ugly personal attack. That's not 'simply' being obnoxious to me. Lima Oscar Lima would be gone right now if that was all it took.

Yeah, but when posters were reporting the first attacks, why did you says "it's your problem if you don't have an adequate anti-virus/malware program". Do you really think you were helping anyone? At that point, neither did you, or more importantly, Nick, seemed to remotely care. Because it's the ads, and they're the lifeblood of the site. And when the attacks returned, the same attitude prevailed. And some Chewers got fucked for 100$ because of it. What do you say to them?

I've already said it. Go be a crusader somewhere else.

Of course. What you said is: it's something, we're working on it.
Thanks CHUD, appreciated.

I don't really get some people's sense of entitlement around here. You're not entitled to come here and say whatever insulting shit you feel like saying to whoever you want. And yeah, the people who run the site deserve more consideration 'cause it's their site. But I've found if you don't sling insulting shit, you tend to not get it.

And still I think these boards are way more tolerant with that crap then most. If these were my boards I'd rule with a Draconian hand and fuck you if you didn't like it.

Seriously, please stop coming here.

Well, thanks for providing us with a refuge/place to talk movies/culture/etc. (But especially movies)

As far as that sort of thing goes (and most other areas of discussion as well, honestly) this is the best messageboard I know of.

Keep up the good work. It doesn't go unappreciated.

Thanks. This stuff always clears itself out. Some posters start to think that THEY are the boards, and then they huff off somewhere else. Then they can't believe that the boards keep chugging along without them.
Well I love this place and I consider it a privilege to not only post here but be allowed to share my ramblings with the world via my blog.

Great post Devin and thanks for putting up with us all.
These are easily some of the most tolerant boards online.
Just wanted to chime in like Olson. Some tend to forget that this is a free service and get a feeling they have the right for any demands. Even though I'm not always happy with everything going on in here, I mostly accept whatever happens because I'm a fan of the content provided. I might suggest changes, but I know it's their decision. I'd leave if it became inacceptable.

Now Nick and Devin could certainly spend more time addressing stuff and stay in contact with everyone who has a need, but seriously... we don't know their schedules. It's easy to think about how we would manage the boards, but we're not in their positions. We know CHUD had major financial problems in the last months and that the planned update still isn't here. I doubt that has anything to do with laziness. Same for 11 Colonals Attack for example.

For being loyal readers for years, some quite lose it. And yes, sometimes Devin is snarky, but c'mon. Since when is that news? No need to take it that seriously. I bet most of the time he leans back and laughs because he exactly knows what happens next.
The company I work for's website is always getting its users hit with malware and I can tell you it is nearly impossible for ANY site to completely eliminate malware related ads.

I will say that we have recently started using Rubicon to handle remnant or bottom feeder advertisers(ad networks and such), and they have helped to significantly reduce the number of attacks we get, but it is almost completely impossible to eliminate them.

You really do need to get more than "free" virus software on your computer or else you are at risk on any site. I should know, I don't have any paid virus software on my home computer and I have had to wipe my hardrive twice from malware(that I got on sites other than CHUD). It's my own fault, not the site's....

Sebastian's right about the tolerance here. To a fault, I think. Sometimes, the Mighty Banhammer should be more freely wielded. I mean, look at the rules at other places on the web. Say, Somethingawful: http://www.somethingawful.com/d/foru...orum-rules.php

Quote:
Make sure you are familiar with the rules below. Memorize them. Read them daily if you have to. They are guidelines you must follow in order to keep your account privileges. If you break a rule, you will likely be punished. Punishment can be a temporary or permanent loss of privileges. Most users have been around for many years and not had any problems. This is because they know the rules!

A Message To the Newbies!

We here on the Something Awful Forums are very elitist and strict assholes. We pride ourselves on running one of the most entertaining and troll-free forums on the internet. This is accomplished by charging a $10 fee to filter out folks not serious about adhering to the rules, and banning those who manage to slip through and break them. We are very serious about keeping our forums clean and troll-free, so please consider your account an investment and treat it accordingly. Read the rules, use common sense, and help keep the SA Forums the best message board on the internet!

General Conduct

Lurk before posting! We cannot stress this enough. Each forum pretty much makes it clear from its name and description what is acceptable in there or not. Be sure you have the appropriate forum before posting. If there is no forum dedicated to the topic you wish to discuss, use General Bullshit. Do NOT post porn or any "questionable" material in GBS; if you would be uncomfortable viewing it at work, do not post it there. Keep all disgusting pics in FYAD. Additionally, please check to see if your post is a redux (it has already been posted before by another forum member).

Before you post:
Before posting, please ask yourself the following question: "Am I making a post which is either funny, informative, or interesting on any level?"

If you can answer "yes" to this, then please post. If you cannot, then refrain from posting. If you post anyway, the mods will probably gas your thread, automatically awarding you a 15-minute probation.

Before you reply:
Before replying, please ask yourself the following question: "Does my reply offer any significant advice or help contribute to the conversation in any fashion?"

If you can answer "yes" to this, then please reply. If you cannot, then refrain from replying.

Posting Rules

Low Content Posts: Please do not make posts containing no content (ie, "first post," "hello, I'm new here," etc.). These just litter up the forums and with over 100,000 registered users, we need to eliminate these as much as possible. If you do not like a thread, then just vote it a "1" and move on; replies consisting solely of trolling fall into this category. As a general rule, write as if you were speaking in real life to another human being. Do not use any catchphrases, memes, internet slang, or any other crap that makes you look like a 12-year old.

Worthless Posts: We do not care if you are drunk or high; please do not inform us of either. Please do not register gimmick accounts and make posts as a gimmick, as they are not funny. Please do not post crap asking us to vote for you on some website, give you referrals for free iPods / flatscreens / spare tires, or any other semi-spam things.

Forum Fuckery: Don't fuck up the forums or any user on the forums. If you post a malicious link (any URL with spyware or code designed to annoy people) you will be banned. Do not vote spam a thread with your friends because you don't like the person who posted it; this makes the voting feature useless. Do not make plans to annoy / destroy other forums.

Stay On Target: Try to use the appropriate thread tag for your post. This helps people find your thread and makes the forums more user friendly. Do not use the mod-only tags or you will be autobanned by the server.

Contained Conflict: Keep all flamewars and other arguments in their appropriate forums (FYAD, YCS, etc).

Respect the Mods and Writers: The moderators are here to keep the forums safe, sane, and secure. If they ask you to do something, please do it. Please do not harass or intentionally annoy the mods or insult the front page writers. If you do not like the mods or the moderation, feel free to not post here.

Harass and Sass: If somebody is harassing you on the forums then discuss it with them over PM or email before contacting a mod about it. Flames and insults do not constitute harassment. Please do not post others' personal information (phone number, addresses, emails, etc.). Try to stay out of other peoples' personal lives as well. Keep in mind there's a good distinction between the Internet and real life.

Account Ability: Only one person may use a forum account. Account sharing is a bannable offense, so please keep your password secure.

Crazy Catchall: Please do not try to cleverly circumvent some rule listed here. These rules are general guidelines and are very flexible.

FYAD Freedoms: You cannot post illegal material, harass others by posting their personal information or nude photos, spam thread subject lines to break the forum tables, harass any admins or mods, or start forum invasions in FYAD.

I Hate Speech: Offensive terms such as "faggot" or "nigger" may or may not be bannable based on context of the sentence. If they were meant as humor with absolutely no offensive slurs meant, the user may not be banned or probated. This rule is completely, 100% subjective and is based on the mod reading the post at the time. Use at your own peril.
Quote:
What If I Get Banned?

If you break a semi-minor rule, you will be put on Posting Probation, where you will not be allowed to post threads for a specified amount of time. If you break the rules again after being put on probation, you will more than likely be banned. If you are banned, then your name will appear in the Leper's Colony followed by the rule you broke. You may re-register your account unless you have been perma-banned, which is rarely done and only for serious cases (such as child pornography). If your email account matches that of your banned account, you can register your account again, but if they do not match then there is nothing we can do. This is to prevent fraud and user impersonation.

I Don't Agree With a Mod or Admin Decision!

If you would like to inquire about a particular mod or admin action, we welcome any questions in the Questions, Comments, and Suggestions forum. Please be civil, explain your point, and detail your opinion on it. You may question any mod or admin you like as long as you are not rude about it.

This Place Sounds Like a Ripoff!

If you do not agree with these rules, please do not register an account. If you are not sure about buying an account, please do not purchase one. The only people we want to register accounts are those who really want to be here and will respect the rules and other forum members. We reserve the right to ban anybody on the forums, especially furries, Scientologists, and Libertarians.

This Stuff Annoys the Mods and Admins

Here are some general tips and posting pointers that the mods and admins do not like in general. We are including this list because, having run the forums for seven years, trends and catchphrases light up the place and catch on like wildfire. Unlike those other forums out there, we despise these things and feel they hinder creativity and humor.

* Beginning a thread with "so," such as "So my parents got me pregnant today."
* 56k warnings. Less than 1% of our users still have 56k modems, so we do not need "[56k NO!]" warnings in thread titles.
* Catchphrases in general. Just because somebody else wrote something humorous does not necessarily mean if you do the same thing then you will be humorous.
* Backseat modding. We have more than enough mods and admins here. Please do not act like an armchair admin.
* Internet lingo or slang of any sort. Please do not act as if you are posting through AIM.
Tweak those for CHUD (removing all references to paying for accounts, etc) and implement them here. Watch the bullshit levels drop.

In June, I will have been coming here for 10 years. I appreciate you guys persevering through a lot of ups and downs and for providing these boards for all of that time.

Dealing with IT shit without a dedicated IT person can't be fun. Dealing with board moderation in addition to providing reams of content can't be fun.

Some of us stick around anyway.

But seriously, this thread is very cool. I've been posting here for years, and lurked a couple of more before that. This site is a prerequsite stop for me everytime I go internet surfing, and it's never going to stop. EVER. This site is just so much in tuned with my tastes and sensibilities that I would have to grow up to finally stop lurking here.

Plus, I tell the jokes that Nick & Co tell, SHAMELESSLY, to my friends and they think I'm a genius. This site is the best kept fried gold mine on the internet, and on behalf of the U.S. Army, we thank you CHUD!

I've been on boards where they don't allow you to link to pages with comment threads in case there's any objectionable content in them. That means posting an innocent YouTube link could get you suspended because someone might swear in the comments.

I hope the "vote with your keyboard" idea is applied to threads someone may not like. Instead of bumping it with a comment about how dumb you think it is, go post in a thread you think is more worthwhile.
Thanks for being here. I appreciate this forum and the people here, for the most part. The people I don't care for are on ignore or I just stay away from their posts, and there's hardly any of those.

So, thanks right back at you.

I think those Something Awful rules could be too harsh for us, but I like their policy about pointless posts. And I agree with you - if people don't have an intelligent or interesting comment to make about a thread/post, they should ignore it. Spamming in threads is trolling.

I love CHUD. I've lurked and posted on other movie boards, but this is far and away the best one. I've learned a crapload about film and the movie business from y'all, as well as stolen countless jokes and snarky lines.

It's gone from a place I visit once in a while to my most frequently checked board/site.
I've been a member of these boards for 10 years. Needless to say, its the longest relationship I've had with anyone outside my immediate family and friends. For good and bad, I love all you guys. Even if you don't love me back. I came for movie content, but stayed for the company. CHUD.com rocks, Chewers rule, and the people who make it all happen (Nick, Devin, Eileen, et al.) are to be commended for all their hard work. I've donated to the site when I could over the years. Those who haven't and frequent this place often should do so. The least you can do is to give back to a place you care about and help keep it running.

Yeah, I have to echo the appreciation for the tolerance shown posters here. It's gotten to the point where I've found myself wishing that the few other boards I post on showed CHUD's tolerance.

I've been coming here for awhile now, but just recently started posting more often. The only other site I visted was TWoP for TV stuff and you have to be very careful of the others posters there. You can get banned in a quick minute.

It's one of the reasons I was kinda fascinated with this board. People can be more straight forward with each other here, but when it turns nasty, I just try to stay away from it. I don't like nasty all that much. I do like the straight forward talk though.

Oh, and the humor. This place has some very funny people on it, and I giggle a bunch when I read some of it.
Love the place. I will take Diva's advice and donate money soon. Don't even have any idea how strict anywhere else is. CHUD is really the only place I've actively posted on a message board. Aside from IMDB, that is... (shamed).
I know Dev is the sanctioned CHUD troll around here, and today's proven it once more. He goes negative, and hits take off.

I've learned to take his churlish attitude for what it's worth. When he really gets going, I always picture John Belushi ranting on Weekend Update. It always ends up with Dev rolling on the floor, frothing at the mouth over nothing.

We could all stop taking Dev so seriously, Dev included.

He's not curing cancer. But a lot of people are jealous of what he gets to do in the employ of CHUD. But it takes talent to also churn out the articles as well as he does.

And ultimately, we're all playing in Nick's sandbox. Or, as I like to say....

"Forget it, Jake--it's Devintown."
