Windows Media Center

Thread Starter
My parents recently crashed their Windows Media Center Home Edition 2002 rig. Weirdly, up to the point they had me fix the computer, they've never actually utilized the media center components. I've hooked the computer up to their HD screen and cable, but it appears we're missing the MPEG2 codec. Does anyone know of a good freeware video codec that is compatible with Media Center 2002?

Here is the google search I did for "open source codecs for windows media center." K-Lite looked promising, but I need to make the disclaimer that I haven't used windows in almost four years now, so you'll need to do the proper research to make sure it's a safe download.

Also, the term "open source" usually yields more trustworthy results than "freeware," at least for me.

Just stick with VLC as a player. Decodes pretty much everything I throw at it. Even have a remote for it on my iPhone.

+1 for VLC. You can even set it up to stream content over your local network on a variety of different protocols. Kind of like having a little private radio or tv station.

EDIT: Also, vlc can play .iso files, if you choose to make legal 1:1 backups of your movies...
