Luther - New BBC Cop Drama Starring Idris Elba - Page 3

Great episode.  Loved the final few minutes with Alice.  Watching Cameron fall apart simply for being ignored in a conversation was so great to watch.  Much to love in this episode but too tired to write now.  Thoughts later after everyone chimes in.

I really liked it, great conclusion to last weeks episode.

Great write up Spike, i'm really warming to this series and I'm not normally a fan of crime dramas.

God I loved the little bit with Alice there at the end. Luther almost happy. And the guilt the man must carry. Are we sure Luther isn't Irish Catholic?

Also, loved what you said in the review Spike about Luther's intellect setting him apart from everyone else. That is so very true. He doesn't fit in with the cops. He can't join the criminals. I just hope the next two episodes really show why Luther is back though. Is there something/someone he wants?

And really, I could just watch Elba act all day long. Hell, I could just watch Luther and Alice talk back and forth all day long.

Another excellent write-up, Spike.  And I agree - when you see the two parts together, alot of that first half suddenly fits so much better.  That scene with Alice was just beautiful.  And it's kinda scary how right she is about everything - if he doesn't let go, this job an these people will be the end of him.  But there were so many great little moments in this episode that it's impossible to pick my favourite bit.  Although I have to admit that I haven't heard "minging" in so long that I burst out laughing right at the end.

And Spike, you mentioned that it almost felt like they were trying to find a way to carry on the universe without it's title character.  If Luther ended up being Morgan next year, I'm sure we could all live with that.  Alice Morgan capering around countries that start with M like a deranged Carmen Sandiago would get my viewership.  Especially if she bumped into one Jay Wratton somewhere along the way . . .

I could be wrong, but it feels like Luther's death, or escape, are natural end points for this season. The reduced number of episodes just makes the season feel like it's either transitional or it's there for closure.

Glad you guys are enjoying these.

Loving the shows and Spike's reviews. Although I have to say the whole hooker being an indentured servant feels a little off. Im sure they will make her and Luther's relationship worth it though.

Holy shit. The Office attack was one of the most vicious things I've seen on TV in a long time. Just the way it was shot, that long tracking shot following him into the building and the veritie style as the attack kicked off, was amazing.

Really strong episode.

Bloody hell, that was grim. And great, though I'm missing Alice. I like - and I mean this sincerely - how the bad guys in this are barely one bad day away from being straight outta Arkham or something.

There is just no way this ends well for Luther at all.

And I agree with you Spike, I could really just watch Luther have to deal with everyone around him. His own mind isolates him from everyone else.

Bit late with this one since the missus is in hospital at the mo' . . . but holy shit.  Hammer to the head makes it's return to Luther!  And then some.

That was some truly, truly great telly.

Wow that hammer scene................

Yeah still loving this but missing Alice.

Oh man, that was great. For once, just the threat of Alice was enough, I fucking loved that bit. Regarding the ending, though, I have to say admit

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

I spent the entire last 5 minutes convinced Frank was going to show up and blow him away, I've never been so goddamn glad for a set of credits to roll in my life.

I was sort of underwhelmed yet very impressed at the same time. It's just that the nature of the show has set you up to expect the worst so far, so you're surprised by him just getting to eat some ice cream.

I guess this pretty much guarantees more Luther in the future, so I'm happy.

And I can't believe I didn't see Luther's slight of hand in the truck coming. I was so convinced something incredibly nasty could happen any time.

And I liked the fact that Christopher seemed to be the brother with a sense of humour. Made you believe the two were different persons.

Yeah I dug it but it seemed odd that threat worked. I mean she never met Alice and is the head of a bigger organization. Some random persons he has never heard of that could be completely made up shouldn't scare her away really.

I was thinking that at first, too.  But then, she is aware of what John's capable of.  And by then she would've heard about the stand-off in the truck with Nicolas.  I think she is well aware of the fact that John is not one to bluff or bullshit.  He's got some hard-earned credibility.  So if he says he's got a "crazy psycho killer girl" on speed dial, at this stage would you really want to take that chance with the man?  I think she already knows deep down that he already got away with eliminating Toby and Frank himself.

"Her name's Alice".  Also, love that this season ended with the line "Now what?" as well . . . but in a completely different context.

I think overall I am disappointed with this season and that ending. Luther came out to clean and happy. I loved the Alice threat, and I assume people who mess with John Luther have heard the stories about Alice and him. And really in a way, I want to see more of Luther being pulled away from those around him because he's not just the smartest person in the room, he's just on a whole different level.

i) A third series has been ordered. Hopefully it'll be longer, though Elba has indicated he'd like to to an all-week event style story next;

ii) Just read The Calling, which is set prior to the first series. Rather enjoyable though if anything, it manages to be even grimmer than the series.

BBC have confirmed Idris will be back for a third series next year.
